Empire Epic Choices: Raider or Gozanti?

By Not Bob, in X-Wing

I'm not wealthy enough to throw caution to the wind and say I'll get both. But I'd like to start with Epic soon. Question is, which do I go for:

GOZANTI has the looks.

RAIDER has the firepower.

My first choice for gaming is therefore the Raider, but my first choice for eye candy is the Gozanti.

Though it pains me to tear my eyes from the Gozanti, I think I'm going to have to go for guns. Triple Ion Cannon turrets.

How and what would you choose?

The Raider is a great choice for it's firepower. You'll need some of the cards from the Gozanti to really make the Raider shine though, but you will probably be able to pick those up online.

If it's just about having an epic ship for you, I would tell you to get the Raider and enjoy it. Save up for the Gozanti and add it to the fleet later.

I still vote both.

Do you have a Tie Advanced?

The Raider is a nice ship, and the X1 title, and other upgrades is killer. But if you don't have or don't want to use a Tie Advanced, I'd say the Carrier because it will give you a greater bang for your buck in non-epic games.

This is good advice. With the 4 new ties and Agent Kallus it does more for standard play. Of course you do get Palpatine in the Raider, so maybe it's a toss up.

Start with Raider. Gozanti is cheaper so you will be able to save up for it more easily.

This as well, it's also easier to reach through christmas and birthday presents.

And the Advanced fix is huge.

I'll quote you both together

No I don't have a Tie Advanced

Yes I want a (ahem three) Tie Advanced

Darth Vader is one pilot I want. I've only used a squad builder, which did get a card wrong (can't remember which but it required energy from the Millennium Falcon...duh), but I did drool at the idea of:

Darth Vader with Accuracy Corrector. Change two results to hit, Advanced only gets two shots anyway, and I'm certain I read Darth can take two actions. Ouchy! Like I said, I might be mistaken, but I really do like the Advanced now. Plus, the upgrade is free with x1 title as the reduction in points and cost of upgrade cancel each other.

Of course you do get Palpatine in the Raider, so maybe it's a toss up.

Palp is nice, but he's also very expensive. Not only does he cost a ton of points, he has to go into 1 of two ships the OP may not have. Plus he's IMO anyway less useful in general then the new tie pilots are. Those you can fit into almost any Imp list. Palp has to be built around.

But the point about it being easier to save up for the Goz isn't bad advice. But at the same time, the Goz is $70 MSRP, only $30 less than the Raider. For most people $70 isn't a meaningless amount of money.

Darth Vader with Accuracy Corrector.

If that's something you want, then I'd say the Raider is a great option. Both are good ships and offer a fair amount for non-epic play. But Vader with the title and ATC or AC is really pretty nice, and might be better for you the new ties.

A Frigate, be it Neb B or Arquetens.

a Raider.

2 Gozers

at least 2 Deci.

Run a campaign around them.

the eye says gozanti - listen to it.

cheaper, too. and has 2 ties.

and 4 new pilots. and extra stuff...

the raider has the looks, the advanced-fix, and Klaus. erm.. I mean the emperor.

if you don't need either of these badly, stick with the gozer.

..you know you want both sooner or later, anyway ;)

Gozer gives all current epics a new lease in life, so if you wanna go scum or are reb centric... Gozer.

Raider is the advance fix, which is huge. Also It's a mini-stardestroyer.

Klaus is the Emperor? An Evil Sith Lord?

Mind just been blown.

It sounds like your question is less "which should I get" and more "which should I get first"? If that's the case, I'd say: Gozanti.

The Raider was FFG's way to fix the Advanced. That was something well understood and widely discussed. The Gozanti is FFG's way to tweak and buff basically all the Epic ships. I wouldn't _quite_ say it's a fix. It's more like what Rebel Aces brought to the B-Wing.

The biggest issue that Epic ships have is energy use. The Gozani offers 2 fixes for this. Epic ships are action starved. The Gozanti offers a fix for this as well.

As of right now, no epic ships can act as carriers. The Gozanti _is_ the fix for this (We all have our space prawn fetishes.)

I love my Raider. It's an amazing ship. But if you get the Gozanti first, it will bring with it many more options for the Raider than you would have if you go the other way around. So: Gozanti, then Raider.

I'll say that as an Imperial player, I've been loving the Tie Advanced fix. So far I've mostly used Colzet and he's been a ton of fun. For regular lists, there'll be some new swarm options with the new Tie pilots in the Gozanti, but unless you're big on swarming, you might get more use out of the advanced x1, which is probably the first viable mid-range ship the Imperials got, giving you to fill in less than 25 points with something other than throw-away Academies. So it's not just Vader, but Colzet, Juno, and the Tempest Squadron you're getting. I haven't seen much of the other pilots, though maybe someone is using them to good effect somewhere.

I haven't gotten to try my Raider yet, though I doubt you need to have those missile tubes to make it do good work in Epic. It might not be at it's ultimate maximized damage output, but doesn't seem like it's a slouch by any means.

Vader with predator is currently my fave pilot in x-wing - the guy is just so brutal. My vote goes with the Raider, but I think it boils down to: Raider fixes imperials, Gozer fixes epic as a whole.

As you don't have any epic stuff currently, I'd say go Raider for that reason. If you were epic-rebel, moving over to the dark(right) side, I'd say Gozer all the way, but Vader, Maarek, Juno, Palpmobile and AC tempest are some of the hottest ships in the imperial fleet at the moment, and they're all enabled by the raider's cards. Plus the raider comes with an awesome campaign of objective-based scenarios, which I love.

Having said all this, I know I'll be buying the Gozer on Day 1, it's shaping up to look like a beautiful expansion!

Getting 2 Gozers no matter what.

Getting 2 Gozers no matter what.

My problem is I know if I got one Gozer, I'd probably get three. With six Tie Fighters already, that would be a full swarm with enough Gozers to carry them all.

If you listen carefully you can hear my wallet crying

The 4 "blue" TIE's are my elite squad, the 8 greys I have are my normals.

For me

6 "blues" would be Black Squadron

6 "Greys" would be Academy (or named pilots depending on points)

Maybe I should get 3... I need another 2 GR75s.... be 3 of each then, and I like that 6/6 idea.

Get the Raider, then save for the three Gozantis you will end up with! :)

As someone who hasn't gotten to play epic yet, what is the problem that the Gozanti fixes?

Edited by PenguinBonaparte

I say Raider for one reason.

It's your first huge ship and first intro into epic play. Once you've had a chance to use the Raider a bunch, you'll appreciate and love the "fixes" the Gozanti offers so much more
