Help with (yet another) Brobots list

By karadjordje, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello fellow starfighters, may I ask for your thoughts on the following list (99 pts):

IG-88D

  • Veteran Instincts
  • Fire Control System
  • Heavy Laser Cannon
  • Inertial Dampeners
  • Autothrusters
  • IG-2000 title

IG-88B

  • Predator
  • Sensor Jammer
  • Mangled Cannon
  • Inertial Dampeners
  • Autothrusters
  • IG-2000 title

My rationale was to have D at a higher PS, since he would potentially be late game "hunter" of other high PS skill aces, with his hard S-loop maneuverability and FCS for that last opposing ship, allowing for foc/evade actions. If the early game focus is on him, he would still move later than most (with the soft init bid), being able to boost out if necessary. HLC with FCS should normally mean that no follow up shot from B would be required if the B is destroyed.

Meanwhile, IG-B would be the usual early target, sensor jammer and AT helping it to stay alive longer (especially against TLT), and predator allowing for more aggressive (stressful) flying and/or evading, in lieu of FCS if he needs to switch targets quickly. He is wielding Mangler (HLC on both would be too expensive in this build, possible without inertial dampeners and init bid) so that his ability is useful later in the game if D is destroyed (not having it to strip the tokens), for the follow up shot even at range 1.

Thank you for reading and commenting!

Asymmetrical Agrressors is always an interesting choice.

It is difficult for your opponent to process their combined capabilities during the course of a single tourney battle.

Never been a fan of Sensor Jammer because focus is so common. But maybe it will work for you.

I think it's worth a try.

Thank you Democratus - Sensor Jammer is in place to primarily counter TLT, as those attacks are mostly unmodified, and even when they are, only one would go through.

Any other comments?

Having flown my share of IG-2000 during the earlier part of this year, the thing I noticed was that it was hard to get damage to stick on targets. With only two attacks each round, you really need offensive power. I feel like Fire Control System will be good on B as well. See, if you are facing TLTs, they may choose not to shoot B and just go for D instead. That's kind of okay, but in the end game, B will have trouble pushing damage through. I think you may be better off going full-attack to remove the TLTs before they get too many chances to fire.

But you know, I mostly flew the Advanced Sensors + Push the Limit + Mangler B/C variety of Dual Aggressors, so maybe HLC will get enough damage for you. I wouldn't know from experience, but my hunch is that the target lock will make a difference.

Thank you Budgernaut, I also used to fly AdvSens with Ptl on B/D with Mangler+HLC, and that action economy is amazing.

I have concerns now with the surge of Aces and TLTs, so will continue to experiment in search if an ultimate Brobot list (for me at least) - many thanks for your input.

I have 2 different lists I use very occasionally:

IG88B w/ predator, advanced sensors, 'mangler', inertial dampeners, autothrusters & title = 49

IG88D w/ predator, advanced sensors, HLC, autothrusters & title = 51

100

Its probably a fairly standard build (except using D instead of the more common C). I have tried push the limit, and while its nice to have the token stack, I find predator overall more useful. You need to deal damage, and predator means both ships hit pretty much every time they shoot (even when doing red moves). Plus, you can't use push the limit all the time on an aggressor, and if you don't use it through advanced sensors (plus green move reveal to clear stress), you end up not being able to use it later or denying your ability to k-turn/s-loop (something you always want to keep open as an option).

I really like advanced sensors on the aggressor. It means you don't care about bumping. You don't care about flying over a rock. You don't care about red moves. Much greater flexibility than FCS (which also requires that you focus on one target at a time, and your opponent can exploit that to some extent).

This list is even punchier, but gives up some flexibility:

IG88A w/ predator, advanced sensors, HLC, autothrusters & title = 51

IG88B w/ lone wolf, FCS, HLC, autothrusters & title = 49

100

Since I try to keep lots of space between my death droids, I find lone wolf is not bad on them (if they get close, they get in each other's way). Lone wolf doesn't trigger all the time, and you don't even need it much in the early part of the game. Its there mainly because it gives a slight defensive boost to IG88B (the one most people target first). It also takes away some of the downside of an FCS, because I can switch targets without feeling bad about it, or when firing for the first time on a target, I still have a slight die modification regardless of tokens.

IG88A is much more useful these days. More people are flying 3, 4 ship builds (and even more). You only need his ability to activate once to feel like its worth it (effectively a shield upgrade) and it often activates twice I find (and while both are alive, it makes killing either one even more of a pain). The only annoying thing is sometimes you want one of your IG88s to get a kill, but the other one gets the kill instead (not the worst thing, but still).

2 HLCs definitely provides a boost in damage output. Noticeably better than mangler. Both ships deal 4 damage almost every time they shoot (because you have tokens, cards that provide re-rolls and also IG88's ability). There's not much in the game that won't quickly die when taking up to 8 damage per turn...

I do miss advanced sensors here, but between lone wolf and FCS, IG88B is not totally screwed when actionless...

I have played IGs competitively since last year's regionals (and won my fair share of tournaments). My variant looks nothing like yours (its not my style) and that's perfectly fine. However, there is a critical flaw that must be fixed:

- VI is a personnal choice (I never use it), but some people like it, which is fine. However...

- Putting VI on one IG and not the other is a mistake.

IGs have a lot to gain from having the same PS rating. You can chose to move one before the other. Use one to self bump and then move the other, etc. There is a huge wealth of strategic manoeuvers that you get cut off from having different PS ratings. If anything, your IGs become far more predictable (and you can get in your own way a lot easier).

So my advice: either put VI on both or remove VI and put crackshot (an extra point of damage is pretty good).

All very good advice, I appreciate it. Just started testing the different PS build, and didn't consider Dotswarlock's excellent point!

I always found IG-B to be an auto include for me, followed up by IG-D (especially when using AdvSens, since the positioning options are amazing). Apart from the obvious: Predator, VI, Crackshot, PTL, there are two other, very tempting options for the EPT slot: daredevil and expert handling (both go very well with AdvSens and allow you to keep the distance more efficiently).

Spoiled for choice...

When C-3PO turrets were all the rage, I toyed with Outmaneuver. By removing his green die, he couldn't activate C-3PO. Unfortunately, that build never had the opportunity to face C-3PO. I'm not sure why.

But the point remains that Outmaneuver is an interesting option on an Advanced Sensors IG-88D because you can use your superior positioning to make sure you are out of arc and remove a defense die from the defender.
