Shuttle Tydirium

By Magnus Grendel, in X-Wing

Just been watching Return Of The Jedi, and found myself wondering about doing some pilot cards for this.

I don't just want to hand a shuttle to the rebels, but to make it feel different, despite having the same dial and stats.

At the same time, it needs to play differently to the Empire's version (not hard, as the latter tends to be 'the place where the Emperor/Vader do their stuff from'. It'd be nice to allow some additional Albino Void Bison action...

The pilots I can think of:

  • Rebel Strike Team (the generic one)
  • Chewbacca
  • Tag Greenly/Bink Otauna*

And then you'd want a Shuttle Tydirium title card and a crew card for whichever of Tag & Bink aren't piloting.

Chewie's pilot ability feels like it should be the infamous "Fly casual" - my brain says allow a shuttle to make red manoeuvres even if stressed (they're still red, and you still get stressed, but you can actually turn).

Tydirium should in some way protect you - but I'd prefer "you can't be shot at until X condition, then discard" to reflect the empire realising "wait a minute......"

The other thought I had was a 'protectee' type upgrade - if the shuttle takes damage, it hands out bonuses to the rest of your squad as they try to save it. Maybe hand out a target lock on the attacker to someone nearby when it takes damage?

Also - rubbish though the card is, I still find myself wanting a way to make saboteur work, and the Tydirium is the ship that should carry it if any does.

Thoughts? Comments? Insults?

* I can't remember which one of them is sitting in the (right hand) Pilot's seat in Tag & Bink Were Here. Can anyone help?

To prevent from spamming the park manoeuver, with some TLT's bumping behind it:

Chewbacca

You may perform red [turn] manoeuvers when stressed.

Probably should be a scenarios only. Although I would love a Han or Chewie Tyderium it's just too gimicky to allow in regular play.

Make white maneuvers green.

I've wanted to see a Tyderium title for a long time. I think due to mechanics, it's not likely we'll get a rebel version any time soon. The Tyderium title would be faction independent though so there's nothing stopping them from making that title at some point, but it would likely be in some sort of "Espionage" pack.

In Rebels they've stolen other imperial shuttles a lot lately, so it's becoming more of a thing. I could see that fatter shuttle come out at some point with some other "Stolen" themed cards, including the Tyderium and pilot cards for both the Lamda shuttle as well as the other shuttle, for all 3 factions, and maybe even a new mechanic for stealing an enemy ship. Still I think that's pretty far off.

How about, "you may not be target locked whenever your last maneuver was green".

By putting Rebel Only crew on this you are already making quite a different ship. Maneuvering a problem? Put Dash Rendar on and plough through those asteroids! Need a bit of agility but can't afford EU? Try out Leebo! Not tanky enough? C3PO and R2D2 will help sort that out! Or Jan Ors, or Kyle Katarn, or Chewbacca, or Lando... add Han or Luke for extra killiness. Even Leia can work if you get the timing right, and can get your other ships taking advantage of it too. Double-parking Shuttle? Why not!

I have wanted a rebel shuttle for awhile. In "Legends" the rebels use them everywhere.

If we ever get a Rogue Squad pack you could include a Tycho in the Forbidden (or just a forbidden title). "Friendly ships may spend your target locks when attacking ships in your firing arc" would fit the fluff IMO.

That's just it, they appear so much in legends it's amazing we haven't got them, so many stolen imperial shuttles with alliance starbirds on the fin...

So many.

Of course this train of thinking gets us Imperial escort frigates also... (to me this is a good thing).

Hmmm...

Who tends to fly them? That gives you a third named pilot, then.

I admit that just generic cross-faction ships are quite fun. I keep meaning to paint up a squadron of 'racing stripe' TIE fighters.

It'd be a fine carrier for Sabateur too, yes? Since you can just troll around, blocking people and flipping damage cards while never attacking and relying on your APL to do damage. Of course, by never attacking you lose out on the 3 dice and the cannon slot.

If that means I can totally troll you into oblivion by shunting a shuttle in your path, every single turn? That'd be worth much more than a couple of paltry red dice.

There's no escaping this time.

The shuttle comes with the regular 2 crew slots but equipped with bothans. Then you can separately sacrifice them to get a free target lock on an enemy ship.

I believe PT Vadork put it best "Nooooooooooololol....."

Seriously though, as a mission/scenario it would be fine but for normal play I don't really want to see a beautiful space cow in the hands of the rebel faction.

If it did happen I think all pilots, including any generic, would need to be limited to one per list

The rebel faction has plenty of large based ships to add in to the game, please don't give away one of the few imperial

I also think as a scenario this would be fine, but it might not be a good idea for regular play. I like that the factions have their own flavor. if any faction can take any ship, what's the point of factions?

SW Rebels spoilers maybe? very minor...

The latest Rebels episode even references this:

Something like "How do we keep stealing these?" "I think it's the same one?"

That's true too, they need to give us something to replace the firespray Scum took.

Maybe a DX-9 or JV-7...

Although they probably shouldn't be cost efficient I could see some scenario dropping in a base tile and a couple Rebel pilot cards for use with the Shuttle. You could price these pilots a point or two high which should keep them out of those tournament lists you are afraid of them showing up in but they could still be great for casual games.

Depending on what the Rebel Shuttle pieces come in there may not be a lot of need to restrict it to one/squadron. One tile means you'd need to buy whatever it comes in for each shuttle to use it and I don't know who would want to spend $90 on an epic ship just to fly a Shuttle that may be less efficient. Going one step further you make the pilots unique (like the IG-88s) and with two pilots you still wouldn't need to worry about seeing too many of them.

You'd of course still be vulnerable to splash damage effects and whatnot, bombs and mines and such, and Oicunn could still ram you to death. There are quite a few ways to handle a ship that can't fire back.
