Is "Wampa" intended as a Corran & Co. counter?

By ForceM, in X-Wing

everybody who thinks he's not good enough: please remember his pointcosts. a very good price.

anybody who's still claiming that he's the first thing to die: yeah, he will. easily.

but it's one more round my howlrunner is alive, or whisper/soontir etc running wild..

wampa will not go to the trash-bin.

You can't really build lists around him, he is too fragile for that. I mean if you look at Soontir, you can build a Palpmobile list tailored to maximize his impact on the game and survivability. Thererfore i really like the Palpmobile list with Wampa on top posted earlier.

But even if you just run him with no combo pieces, in a list that has 14 points to spare, he is probably never a bad investment. Most adversaries have at least one ship that must fear his effect. And if not, so what you still have a Tie Fighter with PS4 for 14 points. Like a BSP just with a Pilot ability.

But i think it's in Howlrunner Swarms that he will come to himself. And if its just to draw fire away from Howlrunner at the worst! At the best he will kill a ship 3-4 times his cost.

By the way the people that state how impossible a shot on Soontir or Corran is... Think again. It doesn't matter if it's a Range 3 shot through an asteroid or how many tokens he has. The only thing that matters is getting a critical hit. And the sheer possibility of you getting lucky can change your opponents gameplan quite a bit. If you need to avoid every shot Wampa that's gonna involve some awkward flying really. It's different from arc-dodgers needing to dodge just the most dangerous shots. Because any shot from him is as dangerous as the others, except that he can improve his odds by getting to R1 or some help from Howl perhaps.

And having a cheap but substantial threat is really nice.

I wouldn't call triggering Wampa "getting lucky," if only because of relativity

it is relatively very likely you'll slap a face-down damage from Wampa when you compare it to the sheer impossibility of even Omega Ace's garanteed dice results ever landing on a range 3, 3 agility thruster ship :P

Exactly this. People seem to think Corran and Soontir are IMPOSSIBLE to get into arc with low PS ships. Yes, they are difficult to get into arc in many cases, but don't mix in your minds how difficult it is to KILL them with how difficult it is to SHOOT AT them. I play games against Corran or Soontir where 1 ship gets 5, 6 shots on them. Issue is, none of those shots do anything. It's either rng 3 impossible shot, or auto shield regen 1 hit.

But if Wampa gets that many range 3 "throw away" shots? He has a good chance of taking these guys out.

NOTE: I am NOT saying Wampa is a reliable counter to either Soontir or Corran. But he sure isn't something to scoff at.

What about this? You take Wampa and Scourge instead of a third Ace.

Its also a very synergetic list.

Inquisitors TL enables Wampa and Vader (for subsequent turns or if he is stressed) as well as Scourge who can't take a TL.

Wampa enables Scourge if he damages a ship.

Vader tries to remove Focus tokens for the inquisitor, so he can Juke it!

Rather than Scourge, how about Cozlet?

Why not? He can take a bit more beating but i don't know if flipping cards up is better than one more attack die.

Dear Dracon

Rather than Scourge, how about Cozlet?

you know which buttons to press.

Colzet imho is the unsung hero from the Raider set (forget about that creepy fat (taking up two crew slots) old man)

Imperials love crits. Maarek Stele Omega Ace, Rexler Brath, Vader crew, Topically Wampa (who shots at 4... hmmm.. just before colzet. COINCIDENCE?!?! I THINK NOT! Illuminati confirmed) to name a few.

with 5 effective health, three green dice, an evade or focus action, low PS and 23 Squad points i believe that Colzet should get MVUPFTRES (Most Valuable Underused From The Raider Epic Set) title is a work in progress.

moving at 3 and with accuracy correctors built in this gentleman (or lady) will most assuredly get his/her target lock. and with AC he/she has assured damage. 2 hits might not be much, but against TLT's or those silly FGD 2 hits every time (at least, rolled two crits once and almost AC'd out of Habit)

the threat that he/she provides can not be understated. Granted the postion the ship is in will be seen so that ships can position around it and focus it down is almost assured... but he/she is merely 1/4 of your list!!! which means theres a Rexler brath, or a RAC Vader Gunner, or a Maarek Stele, or a Soontir Fel, or a Whisper, ect.. behind or around that targets focusing Colzet.

and with 3 Green dice most times will live to see 2-4 rounds of fire before inevitable space death.

needless to say, if you havent and you own Colzet try him/her play with:

the Bringer of Blindness (as you flip Blinded pilot on Dash every turn)

the Pusher of Pestilence (as you lock out your target foe's action by forcing them to eliminate the crits that just won't go away) or

the Dominator of the Dominion of Death (as you flip an unknown crit which turns out to be a direct hit which leads to a space death unbeknownst of the enemy pilot) and

the Whisperer of Oblivion as... i dont know ran out of cool stuff he can do with crits and knicknames that went along with the theme, but you get it by now i know you do.
