Obligation Complications

By RLogue177, in Game Masters

The past couple sessions of my game, I've been writing up the potential complications from triggered Obligations ahead of time. I often don't think fast on my feet, as it were, during the game, and I don't like pausing the game to try to finger out how someone's Obligation will make matters messy.

I think about the current story and the location(s) the PCs are in for the session, and I look at their Obligations. I write up a complicating scene for each of them and then utilize whichever one gets triggered. (I have the players roll the d100 for the triggering. It's fun that way.)

The problem is, I come up with neat scenarios for all the PCs, and I find myself wanting to include all of their complications in the session.

Do other GMs have this problem, and what do you do about it?

For anyone curious, this is what I have written up for the next time my group gets together, which will be on the 12th.

Nice write up. Nothing to add though, since I don't use Obligation past chargen. I do weave the character's Obligation background into the larger plot, but it comes up when I want, not when the dice tell me.

This is not my idea, but it will solve your problem:

Have them roll at the end of the session, then they have to worry about what's going to happen for the next couple of weeks to month! It also means you can weave the obligation into the story much easier, and you only have to do the triggered one. It's great.

For fun why not run multiples at the same time? Give the party more to think about than just the one plot thread... That way you get to use them and the party gets to enjoy them.
