2 day, six round tournament - interest and thoughts

By mikemcmann, in Star Wars: Armada

So, for years I played a wwii miniatures game called flames of war. Traveling around the country and world going to multi day tournaments and having simply the best time of my life. Met hordes of new friends and played tons of great games.

I'm very interested in doing the same with armada, but I've struggled with finding tournaments to go to. I don't want to wait three months to go to som quarterly sanctioned blAh..blah...blah..

So, to this, I'm considering organizing a two day six round tournament. Standard tournament rules and all...with piles of prizes, painted minis, carry cases, terrain, etc, etc... I am thinking capping at 32 players for a controllable number. Also with a 16 reb, 16 imp mix requirement. Running sometime in late February or early March (to dodge holidays) starting on. Saturday. Four games then and two on Sunday so people can return home.

This is a "feeler" to see if there is interest and to cull meaningful and constructive thoughts.

So...go ;)

Mike

I'd consider something like this. But it'd have to be somewhere reasonably close. The wife may kill me if I had to book a flight to play a game. I'd probably kick my own rear too. Haha

Whereabouts are you located/thinking of hosting the event?

I live in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

Its actually called "the crossroads of America " because the number of highways and other transport methods to arrive.

About a 6-8 hour drive from the east coast and manageable drive from the west to about Kansas.

Anywhere from 6-8 hours from parts Canada and southern USA as well.

I've already spoken to two hotels that are willing to set aside room blocks right near the game store.

I could probably do that. Roughly 9.5hr drive from Scranton, PA.

I would be interested! I'd have to check the specific dates when you post them but I'm about only about 7 hours from Indianapolis.

I would have to fly in. . .

Ok, cool... A few interested.

I will continue prep and produce more info as I go

Thanks fellas

Possibly, if I can get some buds to road trip with me.

Also, it depends on cost, of course.

Out of curiosity, why 16 Rebs, 16 Imps?

I like the idea Mike. Depending when it is depends if I can make it or not. I also use to play flames of war. We have played many a game at wolfkrieg

That'd be great! That's what we usually did. Four dudes in a car splitting a hotel...good times

The equal split is to have no "blue on blue" matches. As a wwii player , we always liked to have even "axis and allies" forces from a historical perspective. If that isn't an issue or concern, can drop that ;)

Hey Chris!

I played at every wolfkrieg except this year ;). Remind me who you are? Sorry, I am horrible with avatar names :)

(Armada is my new obsession after stopped playing fow) heheh....

Except that if we're following tournament rules mirror matches are almost guaranteed, right? After the first game anyway.

Absolutely. Just like to start out first round as "historical ". ;)

Already got feelers out for prize support and looking promising.

Any other thoughts?

Get a package rate at the hotel that is hosting. Most will offer something like that.

Promote the dickens out of it.

Make sure no other events are taking place the same weekend that could distract people from attending.

Maybe contact FFG. You never know, you may get some support from them.

Got the hotel rate set

Looking at several dates. Any of you chaps have recommended dates? I'm considering in the February-March range

Prize support should be "considerable". ;)

I would be interested...and it would be a guarantee if the host area was in Indianapolis.

Great to hear Rottenreason! :)

I'll continue to glean thoughts and ideas as I work the logistics. I will try to have a date set soon so potential attendees can plan far enough in advance

As an aside, my past experience is with having lists submitted at least a week in advance for Validity checks. Is this a reasonable request and requirement for armada tournamemts?

I would have to travel with someone or meet someone. Portland Oregon has spoiled me with their public transportation and as such I don't have a driver's license

I'm in

I would probably be available

Excellent guys!

@lyraeus - if you make the trip, I'll have a transport for you from the airport ;)

With just immediate interest here and locals affirming, I'm up to 16 +/- 2. That's a good start.

I'll get game space confirmation and details worked out this week and try to have a formal announcement next week.

Thanks for the interest all!

Hey! Mikemcmann! You're THE Mike McMann! Awesome!

Indy is probably just a bit too far for me to go for an Armada tournament that isn't Gencon, but it sounds like you're drumming up some interest!

Hey Steven!

Hahahha.... yeah, I suppose, I am "THE" Mike McMann.... ;) for beter or worse!

I am trying my best to get this Armada craze amped up! hehe... It is my new obsession. :) I figured if there weren't heavy tournaments around....Id make one ;)

If you needed a place to stay, we have Chez McMann available... :) If that makes the trip doable. hehe...

PS I am writing up a couple small articles on list building and dice efficiency if you want some other content, I am happy to toss em over to you. :)

A lot of the old FoW guard are making the jump! I see Cleaves around here now and again.

Dude, I'm definitely interested in some articles from a keen admiral such as yourself :)

Whew, I've got a lot of travel planned this year, but I do think I'll make it to gencon... so maybe we can meet up then?

I Agree! Excited to some old battle buddies playing :)

Sounds good! Definitely will see ya at gencon....as I live 15 minutes from the con ;)

I'll write me up this week and send me too ya. And thanks for the kudos. I'm not sure I'm "keen" yet, but working obsessively as usual on it ;)
