Here's the crawl for our Edge of the Empire game, Star Wars: Edge of Hope.

Here's a bunch of them. They're all standalone HTML files, so just right-click and "Save" if you want a copy:

Crates of Krayts

Dead in the Water

Debts to Pay

Escape from Mos Shuuta

Echoes of the Past

Jewel of Yavin

Long Arm of the Hutt

Mountaintop Rescue

Onslaught at Arda I

Operation: Shadowpoint

Perlemian Haul

Takeover at Whisper Base

Under a Black Sun

Edit: These should work in Chrome, Safari, and I think Firefox. Internet Explorer might have an issue with them, but I don't have the latest, so it might work now.

So, I’m curious about these. Did you start with just one file and edit the text to suit in order to create the other files?

Here is mine when we were going from Jewel of Yavin to Beyond the Rim- I made a couple of changes to locations based on where they wanted to go.

I also have one for when we started our fantasy game using this system, though its not a standard star wars crawl- https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxUTXhu-XPR6bUQ3LWJkdjI5c0U

Yeah, pretty much. Some guy (his name is in the file) created the original crawl. I combined his style sheet with the HTML and the the link to JQuery so it would all be in one file (excluding the font, SW logo shape, and music). I then modified the text and made the title larger. In some, I expanded the width of the crawl since the text was a bit too long to scroll before the music finished. I also made some adjustments so that it would be supported by more browsers.

Extremely cool :) The second one had more of a D&D/Steampunk vibe, with a bit of Victorian "Jack the Ripper" London thrown in. Great quality, I'm sure your players love it :)

Thanks! That's the feel I was hoping for. The basic premise of the game is about the PCs trying to stop a group of wererats who have taken over the thieves guild in a large city. The wererats have begun a series of murders (all assumed to be the work of "Gobbling Jack") while a corrupt religious order pulls the strings behind everything.

It is loosely based on an old Dungeon adventure called "The Rat Trap," and tonally it is like "The Three Musketeers" meets "The Lies of Locke Lamora" and Jack The Ripper. So far, very fun.

Thanks so much! The only thing I really want to edit is the version of the Star Wars theme you chose. The old 1977 one does not have good sound fidelity. Do you have a file for one of the newer renditions from the newer movies I could link mine too, Ogg?

I'm looking for a theme version that has the same 8 second or so delay at the beginning to accommodate the "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" part but better audio quality.

EDGE OF THE EMPIRE

Episode I

The original one-shot which later became the pilot episode of our ongoing campaign.

Episode II

The follow-up to the original, in which we retconned one character out and introduced two new ones.

Episode III

The next upcoming game, in which the party will carry out their first real mission together and learn to trust each other.

Edit: *nevermind, works.

Anyone know where I can find a slightly higher quality version of the intro theme with the 8 second pause for the "long time ago" part?

Find one of the many legally free sound editing software packages and add whatever blank time you need to whatever track you start with.

Start with https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RP9B42 for a starting audio file and http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/ to make changes to them.

After the first session, the PCs had to beat lockdown of the spaceport to free their ship. Then they delivered the spy to Sarapin, where the Rebels have a small listening post. There, the information was decrypted, and they found out they had a technical readout for a second Death Star, along with an itinerary for Emperor Palpatine showing he'd be on the station in two months time.

At the end of the session, the PCs were getting ready to physically deliver the data to a Rebel-aligned spy cell on Bothawui so it can then be delivered to Rebel High Command. I think you all know what's going to happen while they're there.

One day I'll learn how to do a pan and add in a planet at the end like in the movies. And I'll learn how to smooth out the logo zoom-out/shrink animation.

That looked very smooth to me. If I were to change anything, I would make the text a bit larger (or maybe just a bit taller), and not quite so angled, so that it starts fading out a bit later in conjunction with the audio track. Making it larger/taller will help with making the text more readable.

And I’d add a starfield. And a pan down to a planet, or ships flying by in action, or something.

However, I believe that you have focussed on getting the most important part done right and very smoothly, and that’s the crawl text. Everything else is gravy to help enhance the atmosphere slightly, while the crawl text is vital.

EDIT: I just replayed the crawl full-screen. Now I see that you do have a starfield — which I first thought was dust on my screen. The Youtube-size windowed image shrank the 1080p video by enough that I couldn’t tell there was a starfield at all.

For my part, I would do the starfield in such a way that it would be visible and obvious even at lower resolutions (going down to at least 480p), although I would still do my master rendering and upload to Youtube in the highest resolution possible.

The tutorial I used was for 4K resolution. I've been trying to tweak the numbers a but as far as the starfield goes. What works at 4K doesn't at 1080 or lower. I'll just have to keep trying. I can also tell that it's a pattern and not random.

The logo shrink is designed to start at one speed and then accelerate to a faster speed near the end. When I watch it, I can see the parts where I adjust the speed. Though if it looks good to you, then it might be good enough for now.

The angle of the text does look a bit too extreme to me. I'll have to pop my blu-ray in the player and pause it and try to match it in After Effects.

I'm also not sold on the codec. Whatever codec the pros use would sure be useful to me. That crawl was 1.7 GB. Extrapolating from that, a full movie of 90 minutes would be over 100 GB, which wouldn't let it fit on a dual-layer blu-ray disc. Or maybe I just need to find a better encoder than After Effects' standard thing.

Thanks for the criticisms and kind words. Now, back to work on part 2. Once I figure out what they need to do.

Oh. 4k. Yeah, down-sampling that to 1080p or lower isn’t going to work so well with starfields. ;)

It looked good in the small-size default Youtube window version, and it looked okay in the full-screen 1080p version. But the problems I saw at 1080p are more likely to be a fault on my end than yours.

Compare x-heights. IMO, it’s just a little too squished in your current version. Not by a great deal, but enough to be noticeable and make it harder to read.

Yeah, the pros use some pretty heavy duty compression tools, and they’re pretty expensive. You can probably get most of the way there with judicious use of H.265 or VP9 and some tweaking of the settings, but for a simple crawl you shouldn’t have to work too hard in this area.

For comparison, the Blu-Rays of the most recent releases from Lucasfilm/Disney should be a good benchmark. ;)

It’s easy to point out flaws in stuff, and to be nasty when doing it. Or, at least perceived as being nasty or mean.

But when you see good work, IMO people should speak up and give out compliments as easily as they critique. If there are areas where further improvements could be made, then we should be willing to mention those, but hopefully in a way that conveys the amount of respect we have for the work as a whole.

I’m definitely working on getting better at this constructive criticism thing. It doesn’t happen all the time, but I’m working on it. ;)

I made this for our third game: Episode II: A Police Story

The webside is pretty well made, but sadly the text has to be the same length as the original or else it'll fade out too early.

Anyone know where I can find any kind of an opening crawl text for Trouble Brewing?

I've been planning to do a crawl for the beginning of each adventure of our upcoming campaign. The tutorial that I once used loooong ago, though, doesn't seem to take any of the newer software into account (it's on theforce.net and was last updated years ago). Any recommendations on good tutorials that are more current? Sure, there's the crawl generator at starwars.com, but I'd like to be able to tweak things a smidge more than it allows.

Thanks!

I'm trying desperately to find crawl text for Trouble Brewing and Lure of the Lost.

I made one myself for now for Lure of the Lost since I need one quickly because it is the next adventure I'm running for my group. Hopefully it is decent.

Episode IV

Lure of the Lost

It is a dark time in the galaxy but a new light has begun to shine brightly through the darkness. The long lost DAWN TEMPLE has been rediscovered on the Outer Rim planet Spintir. The Dawn Temple had served as a refuge for the highest echelons of the JEDI ORDER in the days of the Galactic Republic and served as a place where the Jedi could reconnect with the light side of the FORCE through contemplative meditation.

Now that the evil student of the dark side, Malefax, has been defeated, the temple is free to be explored but soon it is discovered that large portions of the secrets the temple holds are not currently operational. Missing are two holocrons, Jedi repositories of arcane knowledge of the Force, that are essential to the operation of the deeper functions of the temple.

Jedi scholar Hethan Romund has been rescued and has taken to mentoring a new group of force-sensitive heroes in the ancient traditions of the Jedi. The training is arduous and oftentimes frightening but necessary if this new group of heroes is to one day become Jedi Knights.

In order to uncover further the secrets that lie within the ancient Dawn Temple it will be necessary to find the missing holocrons that control its core functions. But finding these missing holocrons and confronting the evil that brought about their disappearance may prove to be a challenging test of the convictions of these new students of the Force…

I'm seeking an opening crawl for the adventure Lost Knowledge. Can anyone help me please?
