Heavers 2015 World List - How would you counter?

By DarthDane, in X-Wing

Actually the list he faced in finals WAS a good counter to it, with Corran and Poe plus blocker.

Just that Corran completely blanked for two turns, which can happen but it's quite rare.

You can kill Heavers Poe pretty fast with that list, and after that the list has not much left to fear. The stresswing is the main reason you can lose the matchup, but you could actually try and yolo Poe with your two aces. Nathan didn't do it and got punished by bad luck, but i actually liked his list much more.

I was also at worlds but unfortunately didn't get to face Paul. I came in top 16 and lost to Arron Bonner and his K-wings. Would love to have played Paul though because on paper I feel like my list had an edge. That said it's Paul Heaver flying it so that means a lot. I took 3 gray squadron Y's at PS 4 with TLT and title one with R3-A2 rounded out with a gold squadron pilot with autoblaster turret. Built my list to be able to take out a low PS ship before it fired. I was expecting a lot of TLT Y's as filler if not a full squad and I was right. The title forces you to actually fly but if you can catch something at range 2-3 it hits like a truck. Even at range 1 its amazing if they have another ship at range 2-3 because you can get the primary bonus at range one and then double tap the further ship. It feels great to kill 2 ships with one activation.

List-wise, it loses to PalpAces something like 6-1 or worse. One of the guys from Heaver's gaming circle commented on a Reddit thread about the Sensor Jammer PalpAces list flown by Jeremy: https://www.reddit.com/r/XWingTMG/comments/3s8zsi/sensor_jammer_on_palpmobile/cwwepzd

I know it doesn't help OP, but I thought it'd be useful for the general conversation.

I'm getting the feeling the group was feeling PalpAces was the superior list, but that it randomly blows up too easily, and Paul went with the HP/consistency list.

I can't see how the Heaver list is bad against the Palp Aces. You cut off half the board and funnel Soontir into you. The squad is all board control and if Soontir gets stressed or blocked it's dead. And Vader is nothing compared to soontir. Left to himself it becomes quite a rout quickly.

I am curious to actually play this or see this match-up now...

The stresshog might force Soontir or Vader into some ridiculous repositioning but at the end of the day it's still quite hard to definitely pin him down and get stress on. Soontir can arc dodge entire swarms; dodging the arc of just one Y-Wing is much easier.

Once Poe is dead, Soontir can quite possibly solo the entire rest of the list. If you try to focus Soontir, Vader will chew you up and Palp will keep him alive. You probably have to kill Vader then Palp then Soontir, all while keeping Poe alive nearly throughout. Like that guy said, Jeremy beat Paul in every single match before Worlds, and never lost more than Vader.

A pity you can't use Xizor's ability to counter TLTs

It's more that Paul didn't fall for the "chase the Corran" trap. Yeah, he should've focused instead of evaded that one turn, but it doesn't really change that Paul was still in a good position to get at the other half of his squad.

Something like 2x TLT Y-Wing, 2x FCS B-Wing. Points for PS bids or upgrades. I'd make one the stresshog. You have TLT for easymode turret reliability and insurance against an autoloss vs. a Super Dash matchup, and FCS B-Wings for anti-ace tech. Stresshog if you want for additional anti-ace tech and for potentially trapping an ace in front of the FCS B-Wings.

Or the Scum variant. 2x TLT Y-Wing, 2x PS 5 Kirahxz's each with Crackshot and Glitterstim.

Or 6x Crackshot TIEs, so something like 3x Crack Squadron, 3x Omega Crack Squadron. You have PS on all the non-Poe things. Should be able to wipe some of that stuff pretty early then still have enough for dealing with Poe/running for time if you're playing 60 minute rounds.

I really liked Nathan's list as well. Given that I do not have R5-P9 any suggestions on a substitute?

Dual regen without R5P9? Only option really would be Miranda I place of whichever ace you don't take. Would fly differently as she only regents with a shot. Still works kind of similarly though in that she can SLAM out of arcs to evade fire if she gets targeted first.

"you're paul heaver?!?!" ::scoop:: ::shake hands:: ::get lunch::

You kidding? I would relish the chance to play the man, and brag about my inevitable defeat.

You'll probably be dead fast enough to grab that lunch anyway, too. ;)

I faced him either this year or last at GenCon, and yes, the game was over that fast

As for the list itself, prior to the new starter I was using two TLT goldies and doped up Corran for virtually the same idea. As soon as the T-70 came out I swapped Corran out for Poe and the Bandit, but I normally ran the Lone Wolf/R5-P9 version with 2 R2 Astromechs on the Y's instead of Stressbot. My buddy copied it and switched in Push the Limit, dropping both R2 Astros for initiative (99 points). My version of the list has been beaten by Dual Decimators of all things, as well as a couple other lists, his version I have personally taken down with Soontir/Vader/Juno, my own version of the list, 4x TLT Y's, and a few other lists.

R2-D2 works just as well, arguably better than R5-P9.

R2 is fantastic but hes already accounted for in the build on Corran. Trying to figure out something to fill the void on Poe.

Subbing Poe for a TLT Miranda might not be so bad though. Ill have to play with some builds. That K wing though.... so easy to fall into the trappings of loading it up heh.

I disagree. Miranda with TLT slapped on it is good, and C-3PO is still broken lol. Dash crew seems like a good idea.

I wouldn't. Simple as that.

You worry to much about facing one particular type of threat, you build your list with a specific enemy in mind, you end up crippling yourself against anything else you face.

I never build lists designed to counter another list, I build lists that I myself feel comfortable using and flying.

If you like the idea of double regen list, here's one I've had A LOT of success with:

Poe Dameron

-VI

-R2-D2

-Autothrusters

Miranda Doni

-TLT

-C-3PO

Bandit Squad Pilot (x2)

It's a take all comers list. No really bad matchups, but none that are guaranteed wins either. It's a pretty self explanatory means to victory. Use the Z's as blockers. Although my kill count with those Z's is super high! Don't underestimate their fire power when targeting a ship near death. Also, don't be afraid to SLAM out of arcs with Miranda. It sucks not getting a shot for the turn, but it usually ends up being worth it in a pinch. And there's not much to be said about Poe. He can go toe to toe (even Poe to Poe) with any ace out there. Just fly smart, and you'll get some wins.

As for loading Miranda up, I'm not a fan. My play style is to put 3-4 ships on the board, and loading Miranda up really hinders that plan for me. I like her as a lean, regenerating, late game monster. After the initial scrum, use SLAM liberally to reposition and target the ships without Autothrusters first, then take down what remains.
