Starviper Squad

By Epixca, in X-Wing

I don't think results from March when scum was new is the greatest example of 2 Starvipers being viable.

Having said that, play what you want and have fun. 2 Starviper would be fun, but maybe wouldn't win a lot.

2 enforcers + 2 tlt y's....

It doesn't really matter what the date was. Point is, it was used before, so it can still be used now. I know meta changes.

The trick to any list is to build it yourself, and understand it. Often, the understanding can only come after you have flown it repeatedly, tweaked it, flown it again, and tweaked it again. Just asking for suggestions, or posting someone else's winning list from months ago, probably won't win you many matches. The linked article even suggests that it's a weak list on paper but it was flown really well against opponents that didn't expect it, nor knew the dial yet. I fly a list right now that I'm enjoying using and am having reasonable success with, but it includes (against the current group-think), an M3-A Scyk. So unconventional lists with "bad" ships can be successful if you're confident in knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your list.

However, to what you're asking, and in fitting my own play style, I'd offer this list:

Black Sun Vigo — StarViper 27
Autothrusters 2
Ship Total: 29

Guri — StarViper 30
Stay On Target 2
Advanced Sensors 3
Autothrusters 2
Virago 1
Ship Total: 38

Talonbane Cobra — Kihraxz Fighter 28
Veteran Instincts 1
Engine Upgrade 4
Ship Total: 33

List Total: 100

Or this, because I already started to re-analyze it and tweak it. I like this one a bit better as it plays to Guri being able to stalk a target better, and if in Range 1 each turn have a TL/Focus, and it allows Talonbane way more options to stay at Range 1, even if stressed already.

Black Sun Vigo — StarViper 27
Autothrusters 2
Ship Total: 29

Guri — StarViper 30
Veteran Instincts 1
Fire-Control System 2
Autothrusters 2
Virago 1
Ship Total: 36

Talonbane Cobra — Kihraxz Fighter 28
Stay On Target 2
Inertial Dampeners 1
Engine Upgrade 4
Ship Total: 35

List Total: 100

This is what I'm running next week.

-Talonbane Cobra

Crack Shot

Glitterstim

-Guri

Predator

Virago

Autothrusters

Advanced Sensors

-Palod Godalhi

Blaster Turret

Recon Specialist

Moldy Crew

I have run two Starvipers, but I've found I'm limited with the upgrades available without the Virago title. I love the movement dial the 'Vipers have ,but again, without Virago, they need a little more buffing.

FCS and VI on Xizor as opposed to the way you have him set up now. And bodyguard...just no...Give the ace crackshot and glitterstim.

Also I'd drop prox mines in favor of a RecSpec on the BH and give the Royal Guard PTL instead of Predator.

Thanks for the advice, working on my builds again now.

The starviper is the best small base ship that scum has to offer. A full range of motion across 2 movement speeds means it fights like a stress free b-wing and can be as annoying and evasive as an a-wing. Every other ship in the game wishes it could move like the starviper.

I have an overwhelmingly positive tournament record flying them.

I tried out a starviper build just yesterday and I gotta say I was impressed with it. The thing is one of the most mobile ships I've ever piloted, and I'm usually an imperial player. I did proxy some unreleased tech so take that fwiw but here's the build for reference:

Guri- title, PtL, adv sensors, autothrusters, cloaking device 41 pts.

The action economy was pretty unreal and the cloaking device was much better than the hype so far. Main problem was I decloaked one time when I shouldn't have and.. poof.

Tried this squad.

-Prince Xizor

Virago

Inertial Dampners

Predator

Autothrusters

-Guri

Predator

Autothrusters

-Graz, The Hunter

Glitterstim

I beat my dad, who was playing

-Leebo

Mangler Cannon

Outrider

Lando

-Rookie Pilot

R2-D2

-Knave Squadron Pilot

Who should I give Glitterstim, and which Kihraxz pilot should I use? I would really like the help. Also, keeping Xizor alive is fun and all, but I need to give him some upgrades that make him WORTH keeping alive, any tips?

I'd definitely keep a generic Starviper as cheap as possible. Autothrusters maybe, but that's it, and possibly not even that as I'd be tempted to use it to block.

The Virago offers a lot more capability, but you only get one. Guri loves being up close and personal, so pairing her with a second generic blocker that can keep up with her might work well - yes, a pair of academy pilots would be better but scum don't get academy pilots, and Z-95s don't do....well, pretty much anything that's not a straight line.

Your dad's roster is nowhere near compatible, so you can ride naked Starvipers with decent chacne to win.

I usually say ignore the meta chanters that just repeat the unimaginative list of what "sucks" or doesn't. There are lots of things that can work for you that don't work for other people. I say go and try what you want and form your own opinions on it.

....with that said, I have not flown 2 Starvipers at all in a list. Xizor is best used with some cheap fodder to pass the hits on to. Still....you can use him as a high PS pilot and just ignore his ability. That's not optimal, but it is do-able. With that said, I would always fly Xizor with VI. It just gives them a PS 9 pilot. Besides that, you really have two options for your system. You can go on the offense with Fire Control System to ensure you dish out damage. Or, you can go with Sensor Jammer to keep him alive. One of those options.

I'm not sure about Lone Wolf on Guri. I would think two Starvipers want to arc dodge around an enemy target, which suggests that they would be near each other. Still, if it works for you, then it works. You could always go with Bodyguard if you take FCS for Xizor.

I say build your two Starviper ships and see how many points you have left. If you have enough for Cobra, than grab him. If not, then get the next best. I don't happen to like 3 ship builds so much, unless they are all PS 8-9. I'd rather take a bunch of filler ships with low PS to help beef out the list. Still, it might work for you.

EDIT: Oh, yeah. I've known some local guys who have flown generic Star Vipers in their list and it's done alright. Seems a bit redundant with the Kihraxz out now, though.

Thanks, But, one problem, I don't have FCS or Sensor Jammer. ;-; To make Xizor worth it, I was thinking something like this:

-Xizor

Virago

Predator

Glitterstim

Any thoughts on that?

Without a System, I wonder if the Virago title is worth it?

You can always buy single cards online. I don't think it would cost too much.

I've played the following build and got 3rd place (out of 20) at a recent tournament:

Black Sun Ace (Predator)

Cartel Marauder

Black Sun Enforcer (Autothrusters)

Black Sun Enforcer (Autothrusters)

100 points

I really like the StarViper. Awesome maneuverability and solid defensive/offensive capabilities. The Kihraxz is a lot of fun too.

If you are set on Guri, from my experience the best setup is this:

Guri (Predator, Virago title, Sensor Jammer, Autothrusters) - 40 points

I've used it with...

Talonbane (Crack Shot, Glitterstim, Engine Upgrade) - 35 points

Syndicate Thug (Twin Laser Turret, Unhinged Astromech) - 25 points

... and it worked really well. :-)

Thanks guys. How about this Guri build?

-Guri

PTL

Virago

Advanced Sensors

Inertial Dampners

Autothrusters

Any thoughts?

I'm a huge fan of the Starviper and run them frequently. My favorite list is:

2x Enforcer+AT

Kath+Predator+ID+OT (I very Kath's build)

I've been thinking about running:

Guri+PTL+Adv. Sen+AT+Glit

2x Black Sun Ace+Deadeye+Concussion

This leaves room for MF or ID on the Black Sun Aces as well. All fives and hard hitting!

Question, why Glitterstim on Guri? He already gets a free focus.

She, sorry.

Question, why Glitterstim on Guri? He already gets a free focus.

Anybody wanna add to that? I mean, my logic makes sense, right?

I am testing my new squad:

-Talonbane Cobra

Predator

Glitterstim

-Guri

Virago

PTL

Advanced Sensors

Autothrusters

Inertial Dampners

-Black Sun Enforcer

Autothrusters

I think Predator would be better than PTL on Guri. There are many stress-inducing builds out there.
