New preview article on Assault Carrier TIE Fighter pilots

By Danthrax, in X-Wing

Not an action so no effect is my interpretation.

The EPT must be an "Action" one for the ability to kick in. I don't see where the doubt comes in. If the EPT isn't an action then there is no action on the upgrade card for other ships to perform.

Usable EPT's at present; Daredevil, Expert handling, Marksmanship, Squad leader,

Daredevil is asking for trouble due to no boost unles you put Youngster in an Interceptor mini swarm.

EH seems like it could be awesome if you have Carnor around. Denying use of Focus forces TL's which you then EH away.

Marksmanship is still a bet meh I think due to no defensive help but spread across a whole swarm could cause some ouch, though add in Wampa being able to benifit and drop a damage past shields...

Squad Leader is already covered in the article.

Don't think I missed any action EPT's?

Expose

Doh, though that is mentioned in the article, I'm not sure I like its use any more than normal. Howlrunner helps bypass the usual issue with it to a degree but I'm not sure I like its use due to the agility penalty. Ties die so **** easy as it is.

These guys are sweet. Just imagine the possibilities as a mini-swarm with an ace or two. Fun will be had.

The Gozanti is definitely the best single release for Imperials since.... The Raider. Hmm, the Empire is having a good year ain't they? ;)

I've won mine in our groups raffle so my little corner of the empire is extra happy! :D

I really like these new guys an look forward to trying out the combos. Hopefully we get some new action EPT's too at some point.

Youngster with Expose, in a swarm, earns the title: Streak Squadron.

I am underwhelmed. These were not the pilots we were looking for.

What were the pilots you were looking for?

On one ship, sure, but multiplied across seven? One TIE'll get caught without tokens, but the rest will be laying down a crit storm.

I'm not sure, but the abilities and call signs just don't jive for me. Wampa is ok, flavorful call and ok ability. "Youngster" is a humorous call sign but doesn't really fit with Howlrunner, Dark Curse, Night Beast... And until we get better action EPTs it isn't great (all of them have too many limitations on them); of the three I like Chaser most but it's a meh name and no EPT tie.

I'm sure I'll find uses for chaser and Youngster eventually and Wampa solves the 2pts left over problem but these don't make me want to rush back into swarm play like I hoped they would. I was hoping for something to replace Howlrunner and not something that pushes you towards more Howlrunner swarms.

You wish Youngster was crazy overpowered?

Considering how "meh" the action header EPTs are right now, I'm not certain he would be overpowered. You could just focus him down in the first exchange and boom, synergy all gone.

And with that in mind, I'm pretty sure Youngster is the big loser of the bunch, and I'm not sure I see any of these Tie pilots seeing any more play competitively than the other Unique Ties not named Howlrunner.

And here is why-

Synergy lists are NOT top level competitive in this game. Anytime a preview says "You can do this if you have this guy, this guy AND this guy all still alive!", I instantly get a little worried about the viability of the pilots. Yes, Howlrunner works, but that is because her ability is the very best synergy ability in the game. She fits in lists with LOTS of ships, she is the ONLY unique ship required for the synergy to occur, she doesn't cost much, and she has a 2nd hidden ability which reads "I am the Imperial Biggs when flying in a swarm".

I believe these ships will be fun, and I hope they find a place in the game, but I'm not very optimistic.

I like Wompa as a possible Corran killer in the right list, but he would be dependent on some sort of synergy to make that happen which, as has been noted, is a tough pill to swallow.

I'd agree they are meh on an individual ship but when they suddenly effect a whole squad, I think they improve drastically. I still hope we get new ones too though. I love playing with combos. They often fall short of top tier but are great fun.

Youngster with Marksmanship, Howlrunner with swarm or SL , Wampa and fill out list to taste like good stuff to me. Youngster and Wampa suddenly mean the opponent is less sure killing HR is their priority.

Guys, guys...

Youngster with Expose, 19 points

Mauler Mithel

Backstabber

Academy Pilotx4

=100 points. Seven TIE Fighters with Expose. Get into range 1 of various enemy ships with all of them, and keep Backstabber out of arc, and look at how many attack dice are being rolled! 5 for Mithel, 5 for Backstabber, 4 for the rest! 30 attack dice! It's insane!!

Of course, most of those TIEs are going to pop in an instant due to no tokens and lessened defense dice, but still! 30 dice! I call it... The Glass Cannon Swarm!

Expose reduces your Agility for the entire round. You're going to lose Academy Pilots before they even get to shoot.

Depends when they use expose really...

And if you lose a 12 point acpi? So what?

Keeping Youngster alive will be a problem.

But while they are focusing on him they won't be on Howlrunner, Mithel or Backstabber.

For the first time ever, Howlrunner won't be the emo chick everyone picks on!

Is Omega Ace's TIE/FO in the shop?

Youngster and Chaser are rubbish names!

But the pilots themselves look interesting. Swarms ahoy!

My God they made Expose relevant.

5 BSPs all with crackshot then Youngster with Expose. That's one hell of an alpha strike.

Maybe even better with Marksmanship in him.

Unless you have howlrunner, expose improves your attack exactly as much as focus on average. It's not as amazing as it sounds.

It's actually worse than focus at range 1.

Agree with you on the point about giving your opponent more priority targets... Though Youngster with Marksmanship is three points more than a Black Squadron Pilot with Draw Their Fire or two more than Backstabber. The problem I see with all TIE aces is that they're still a TIE. You can put hull upgrades on them for sure but now you're racking up the points and limiting yourself to less ships. The strength of a TIE swarm is numbers. When you only start with Five or six ships you're not playing to their strengths.

As fillers for other Imperial squads though..? "Hello Mr. Wampa, have you met Mr. Palpatine?" ;)

Well, they can't all be named Goose, Chipper, Sundown, and Slider. When you don't pick your own nickname, you're stuck with what you earned.

When you do pick yourself, you end up with rubbish like "King James" and Darth Urderer

(Iceman, Cougar, Viper, Merlin, Jester, Maverick, Charlie, Hollywood, Stinger, Wolfman)

There should be a cougar, they should be a really, really powerful pilot card, then the forum could all be complaining about cougar swarms, and have specific cougar hunting lists.

I agree.

I agree with any of your posts.

All of your 3749 posts.

Yeah that was a kinda pointless one, still. cougar hunting /chuckle.

I know.

Still ... any new EPT with the action title header could form a new type of swarm.

And a I really hope for a new defensive one in the upcomming wave.

EDIT:

I'm enjoying excellent Pfungstädter St. Nikolaus Bockbeer btw ... a present from a friend ... so my skills in wtiring english words tens to decline ...

Well, an expert handling - AKA we just broke ordnance black swarm would be hilarious.

Or obsidian, and try to get a point in.

Even more so as Darth Kray was saying how much he'd like to break out the assault missiles.

Maybe if howlie had swarm tactics... instanope!

Really? Nobody's going to comment on this? I thought you'd all have lots of amusing jokes!

Siiding off topic, thus only as a side remark:

When Reading Iceman and Maverick first thought was the classic game "wing commander", there Iceman earned the name, did not choose himself. Then realising that film "Top Gun" must be meant :)

Another side remark:

Why does the Gozanti on the leading Picture has a cool red pattern?? So untypical for the almost total uniformity approach FFG has for the Imperial space ships.

Edit:

On topic. Finally TIE swarms get some compensation for their in the current game status really meager 2-dice attacks.
