Wave 9 Speculation, or what EU ship will we see next?

By DariusAPB, in X-Wing

I really hope they do the new F/O Ties that have the turrets on them.

Imperials already have "turn brains off" buttons

why create more?

^Let's put it this way: the gunboat should have replaced the Phantom in Wave 4 if anyone was going by ship popularity. 4 waves is a lot of waiting.

Popularity of boats is a myth inspired by a rather tight group here on forums

Still, more popular than either the Phantom or the InterdictorPunisher.

As a Galactic Battlegrounds fan, I love teh look of Advanced Bomber ™ aka Punisher

The Gunboat is pretty well known among people that give a **** about Star Wars spaceships.

I don't agree with his assessment of the Phantom though. As it was a focal point of a game from the same era that was probably as well known(though no where near as good), as the one the Gunboat is from.

I will admit that the Avenger has a much bette chance of being released than the Gunboat since there's already two TIEs in the Advanced line as well as two different TIE fighters. FFG love TIEs!

But they don't love the Gunboat.

Heck, I knew what game the Punisher was from, but I don't know thing #1 about the Phantom other than its XWMG portrayal, if that gives you some sense.

The Phantom was chosen because they wanted to do cloaking and it was the one ship in the lore that was entirely build around that. Gamedesign > fluff, as some like to say. It also made it clear that XWMG is not just 'TIE Fighter - the board game', since the Defender was also released in wave 4.

HWK?

Well the Imperial only players might have missed that even existed :P E-Wing also kind if debunks that point.

The T-Wing, H-Wing and V-Wing have all appeared in the Stay On Target supplement for Age of Rebellion.

Rather than the miy'til star fighters i listed, we should get this:

500px-HH87Starhopper-SWE.jpg

Now that's just awful, like rabbit ears on a Piraka skull.

what in the hell is that ScumBoat?!

That is the HH-87 Starhopper. Introduced in The Clone Wars and flown by an undercover Wedge Antilles in Aftermath

"Aftermath"

And into the trash it goes.

In terms of EU ships there's also the couple of ships from Empire at War we haven't yet seen. As previously mentioned; the TIE Scout and there's also the Skipray Blastboat for Scum. No idea how likely these are but all the other fighters in the game are out already.

I hear Disney will be churning out Star Wars movies for as long as they keep turning a profit and there's rumours of a Netflix series. Between these we're guaranteed to see plenty of new ships because... merchandising. Not going into any spoilers but I hear there are some key characters in TFA who are pretty scummy; anyones guess as to whether they will have ships that fit the bill for X-Wing though.

From what I gather via interviews; the Rebels stuff was kind of pushed by a certain mouse and I think the Force Friday release of the TFA core set and TFA ships being added to wave 8 latter was indicative that a certain mouse pushed those products too. Disney will want to push for new ships to be used as they will be recognisable to the new audiences as opposed to the hardcore fans of old. Don't get me wrong; sure they will keep using EU ships but only when they don't have a new shiny mickey wants to sell or need to fill a gap in a wave.

Some of the concept art for the TFA resistance fighters looks very interesting...

The Skipray isn't from Empire at War, it appears in many sources and I would say is not unlikely to enter this game as a K-Wing/Punisher equivalent for scum (minus the bombs, I believe) at some point.

The TIE Scout is what I hated about that game, but i guess it can work as a spin on the rebel HWK and might maybe some day when there is little left enter the game.

No idea where it originated but that's where I know the ship from :)

Its where i first saw it, too, but it also appears in the Thrawn trilogy (quite prominently, too, Luke uses one at one point) and I would assume also earlier. Those are among the best Star Wars stories, by the way, they are worth checking out even if they are no longer canon, since TFA pretty much is going to overwrite that era. Well it is a bit later, but the buildup is going to be different, probably. I dearly hope Thrawn somehow makes into the new canon in some way.

Been a very long time since I read the Thrawn Trilogy so I don't really remember that much tbh. Something about cats that suppress the force and a cloaked asteroid field...

I may have to go back and re-read some of the better EU stuff to tide me over between TFA and Rouge One.

No, the cat things (or maybe more wolves) could smell it, the weird tree lizards repell it.

Luke, Wedge and so forth tended to fly lots of crafts.

But we're NEVEER getting to see Luke in E-wing, Jansen as a Super-Gunner, or Wedge on a Tie-D

Don't know what you mean by turns brains off button. But if they did do a turret like it is in the new movie I imagine it'd only work with range 1-2 and have less mobility.

It's a game of guessing your opponent's move.

Being able to re-position yourself with precise knowledge where your opponent is takes little of that abilities.

The same way as turret-ships don't bother about their own arcs.

Maybe we will just see some in-house designed ships like the raider. Or at least a mix

Not entirely sure, but it may have been Decipher that first created the TIE Scout (Decipher named quite a few movie characters as well as cranked out visuals for EU ships/created new TIE variants).
