does anyone do it?
epic on vassal
Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! I have an Imperial and Rebel squad already saved and ready to go. The only trouble is finding a game. I was on last night and nobody showed interest in even a typical 100 point match.
I think it's probably unreasonable to expect to get a pick-up game of Epic X-wing, so our best bet is probably to use the private message function here on the forums to schedule a time to play. If anybody is interested, hit me up and we can try to work out a time to play.
And thanks for starting this thread -- it's something I've been meaning to do.
available today?
I'd love to play, I have to wait until the end of this teaching semester (120% workload).
available today?
Not today unfortunately, I'm a bit under the weather and should probably be sleeping now. I'll PM you.
Another thing that I think is worth pointing out is that there is really no rule that says you have to finish the game. If it starts getting late, or if one player has to leave, there are a couple of options.
- You could call the game where it is. Unfortunately, epic games can swing pretty wildly, so even if it looks like you're losing, you may still have a shot. If it's a little, too close to call, you might try option 2.
- Vassal allows you to save games, so it's totally feasible to adjourn, and then recommence the match at a later date. If your schedules don't match well, however, it may be weeks before you play again. At that point it may be more fulfilling to try a new squad. But if you can meet the following evening, for example, saving is a great way to make sure Epic isn't a draining experience, and doesn't adversely affect your life outside of gaming.
The most important thing -- the whole reason we play -- is to have fun. So don't shy away from epic just because you think you don't have enough time. Hopefully we can boost the epic scene on Vassal!
Disclaimer: I have never played 300 point Epic on Vassal, and my amount of Vassal time is recovering from an all time low after the birth of my 4th child, so I may not be able to get many games in. But the desire is here, and I'm slowly getting more free time in the evenings. Like Mu0n, next semester looks more promising, but I'd like to get a few games in before the end of the year. Here's hoping!
replied. if anyone wants to just post here and/or message me
I'm zero-ing in on a method to automate (in 3 steps) undocking. I'm still not sure it'll work 100%.
-Click on the carrier ship, do a shortkey to declare it as the "carrier"
-Click on a small ship, do either one of 2 shortkeys to declare it as the "undocker", either from the front, or the back. It'll transport it at the right place, overlapping the ship in the appropriate place
-Perform your maneuver normally to exit the carrier.

Wow. You are the man! Sounds pretty simple.
A question came up in my game with Ihavebadluck last night. When we spawned damage decks for the Huge ships, they appeared face up and below their correct pile. Is it supposed to be that way? We ended up flipping each card over, then sorting them into fore and aft piles, then putting them in the decks.

Sounds simple to use, but it's hellish to implement, especially the angled offset depending on the current position of the carrier ship.
Huge deck cards are spawned below the trays, because I didn't want to program a pipeline for each deck that would direct the cards to each of the 3 sets of trays. It dumps the cards in your hand and then you freely decide to lasso them up and dump them (in 1 rapid step) into the pair of trays of your choice. What you did was totally unnecessary and way, way too long. You can mass select BOTH piles at the same time, then aim for both to fall into their respective decks. Their separation at spawning is exactly the one you need for dumping.
So here's something interesting: Epic play on Vassal takes up a LOT of memory. The longer our game went on, the more things lagged. I had assumed it was the server load. So I saved the game, and we decided to finish the match tonight. So I loaded the saved game -- and it was so slow! I tried to move a few things, and once again got the error message about Vassal running out of memory. I have increased the amount of memory allowed to be used by the X-wing module, and so far it doesn't look like it helps much. Bummer. Unless we can find some workaround, it appears that Epic play may be too intense for Vassal.
which huge ships did you use?
I think the CR90 is particularly problematic.
I've been wanting to play more epic these days, so I'd probably be down for it (though I haven't been on Vassal in awhile in general), but I dread a PUG of it. I've gotten to the point where I can play my 100pt games faster on Vassal than IRL due to all of the short cuts available, and I would love to play an epic game like that... But I always seem to find the random guy that takes 3 times as long to play through Vassal than a regular game.. And I barely have the patience for that on 100pts (and sometimes I don't even have it then), I can't imagine 300.
It is sad to hear about the memory issue though. I thought there was an epic tourney awhile back on Vassal?

Yep, we used all 3 ships. I had the impression that the CR90 was a bit slow, but it was hard to tell which ships were at fault.

I thought so, too, but I'm not sure who participated. I guess I can try to look that up and contact them on the forums to see if they've had issues. It would be nice to know if this is an isolated instance or not.
Tonight I plan on getting it all organized so I can submit a report on the Vassal forums to see if any of them have an idea of what's going on. I increased my maximum allowed memory usage from 512 MB to 8000 MB. I stopped getting the "Out of memory" error, but things still lagged a lot, even when I loaded the saved game offline.
Update on Epic on Vassal. Firing arcs seemnto be the problem. When we play using the Imperial or Rebel range finders (the click-and-drag ones) the game doesn't slow down. It's been fun to see some new and crazy builds.
Ihavebadluck and I have been playing on Tuesday evenings, but sadly I was too busy last night. Is anybody else interested in joining us? I'd love to have more opponents and see even more of the cool ideas that Epic enables. One request I have for the community is that when you make a room for your game, put "EPIC" in the name so that this game mode will get more publicity. Hope to play with you soon!
I just played one yesterday and the raider slowdown was awful. I'll try to make a simplified version with less layers and stuff for the next version, and see if it helps. There's a lot of nested properties loading going on with these ships, but I think the real culprit is just the huge target locks and arcs despite that they're not even regular images, but small scripts themselves. Maybe a regular png would load faster (bigger file, but maybe less processing).

I believe you're on to something there. Image rendering > Processing on the fly in most cases.
I want to join and play epic on Vassal! However, even though I have Vassal on my computer and the X-Wing module installed, I have never used it successfully. I'll have to teach myself how to play and get familiarized before I attempt anything as complex as epic.

I'm going to say that I've played pick-up for every 100pt game I've ever played on Vassal. Just click the ! button and wait a few minutes. As for epic, I'm not sure I would due to the time it would take.

Vassal has picked up a ton in the last few months. Nowadays I'll log on and there'll be a ton of games going and usually quite a few people int he main lobby. Back a few months ago, it was possible to log on with only a couple games running and no one else in the lobby at the time.
