Decimator still viable in the new meta?

By IG88E, in X-Wing

autothrusters can ruin a decimators day

Decimator is a tank. It doesn't budge.

Decimator is a sentinel. It draws the aggro from your aces

Decimator will perish. But not before dragging enemy aces down along with it.

Embrace its destiny and they will serve you well.

Devastating hits for every attack. Don't bother saving Palpatine for your ace unless it can't arc dodge or blocked.

I would always choose predator over expose because you want your action for boosting. Only reason to take expose is with EI to do it after Ysanne and having another action like TL and that gives up engine.

You're right. I got the name mixed up when writing. I'm not really keen on using Ysanne nowadays due to the stress meta. On a hindsight probably running Predator + EU might be the safest bet now.

I completely agree with you on not running Ysanne, as much as I want to its hard enough to shed stress with the Decimator as it is let alone if your getting it dumped on you by a Stresshog.

Been wanting to try out a new Kenkirk Build:

Commander Kenkirk

Emporor Palpatine

Agent Callus

Engine Upgrade

Lone Wolf

Whisper

VI

ACD

FCS

99 Points

A tanky Kenkirk with a little more attacking modification from Lone Wolf + Agent Callus.

Looks to be good fun.

I always laugh at Darth Vader on any variant of a decimator. Thank you for the free damage on your own expensive ship (usually more expensive then any ace you are trying to kill). He alone is the reason I killed 2 decimator in regionals in the first combat round. Best part? He didn't even secure the kill against my Fel. One of the many reasons HU > stealth for every one of my interceptors.

Everything else in this thread though is pretty viable and makes for some fun dodge-y tanks.

It's usually worth it to push through damage on Fel but yeah, on an expensive Deci he's counter productive. I let someone do a takeback to do Vader for that reason.

Vader on a deci is a IN YOUR FACE, FILTHY ARCDODGING covered_in_dice_autothrusting_4_green_dice ninja

because fel gets a fire? DERP. Fel gets a 0 skill? DERP. Fel gets "lose the EPT" DERP

Fel gets a stress? DERP. Fel's turns are RED? DERP!

But it means you're not putting all your points into that Deci.

Maximum is a Oiccun.

The two downsides to Decimator:

Its easy for your opponent to take 1/2 points from it.

big TLT lists can plink it down pretty fast. Example: quad TLTs will do 8 damage per turn. Which gives you 2 turns when reds start rolling.

The Decimator is still quite viable, even if it's been hit with TLTs and the new MoV rules. One of those is just a nice re-balance to competitive play, no biggie. The other? Well, it's not the first ship with a "hard counter" in the game (far from it).

Which, understandably, will scare folks off. However it's still a big, hard hitting ship that should at least get a couple shots in against a TLT list before going down. With an EU, it should be possible to extend it's life quite a bit by skirting along at R3 and only taking shots from one or two TLTs at a time while the rest of your squad/your ace come in from a different angle.

But honestly, TLT's aren't the only thing being flown. **** near everything that the Decimator is/was so effect against pre-TLT is still very much out and about. Fly a Decimator with Whisper or Fel or even a mini-swarm, all of whom are strong TLT counters, and you should still be capable of overcoming a lot of different list types. Seriously: Sensor Jammer "Whisper" don't give a **** about TLTs.

But (or should I say butt) honestly, if you're flying deci/whisper and manage to get to half hull before removing a TLT from the table, you **** near deserve to lose.

I don't agree with the first sentence. If someone has Vader on a Deci, it's 3 point insurance for dealing with low HP aces or opportunistic kills for 1 HP ships. It's not like you have to use Vader at all, and 3 'wasted' points on an expensive ship is not that big a deal.

Now, totally agree on the second part. I like HU or even SU on Fel, because I like insurance against those Fickle Green Buggers, but it's the same process behind Vader on the Deci. I want insurance.

I agree with the first part. If a B Wing survives at 1 HP, and has a shot at your Decimator, you were likely to take 2 damage anyways, so Vader comes in very handy.

MAYBE now I'd run HU or SU, but once I made the switch to SD in a turret meta, I haven't looked back. 4 Agility letting you regularly stop 4 hits from HLC on IG88B, or Range 1 shots from Falcons out of arc, stuff like that makes Stealth Device feel very, very, good.

Just for the lolz, I should get a second Decimator (it would look nice escorting the Raider anyway) and run 2 x Patrol Leader, Rec Spec, Flight Instructor, Stealth Device.

See how that holds up against a TLT squad, try to stay at range 3.

Viable? No. Worth the looks on their faces? Sure.

You should be running Stealth on Soontir for partial TLT and full TLT lists. ... at least I think. Otherwise, a smart chap will not let you get all the way into R1 from R4, or bump you. Etc.

When you do that... well, Vadering Soontir is basically chopping his arms off.

I played Deci + Vader against 3 TLTs this week (Doni, Salm, Gold). Fastest game of X-wing I have ever played. It went about 7 turns. Vader got shot at by TLTs and RB1 Doni and died in a puff of nothing on Turn 3. The Deci got attacked by 16 TLT shots and evaded one thanks to Isard but point blank Salm finished it off. Yeah, I am not sure what rampant insanity provoked me to play a Deci against TLTs.

How would this fare? The EU and Navigator should serve you well to get into R1.

Rear Admiral Chiraneau (46)
Predator (3)
Navigator (3)
Ysanne Isard (4)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Darth Vader (29)
Ruthlessness (3)
Proton Rockets (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)
Total: 100

PS 8 makes it so that the relevancy of Navigator is greatly diminished, if "late-stage" maneuvering is the objective then I'd much rather use the Ysanne and PTL combo.

Good uses for those three points would be Captive/Mara imho.

If your flying a decimator against TLT's, do the smart thing and ram it into the front of them. Take away those shots. Decimator is still a monster. MoV and TLT's be damned. Just don't lose and its not an issue with MoV. I've been flying this ship in every competitive list I use since its inception. With Chirpy VI'd to PS10, and Vader and Gunner, you auto kill interceptors and phantoms. If your Decimator lives 3 turns, and gets his shots off against an aces list, you should win, as long as whatever you bring with him can stand alone... I used to bring Fel, but not anymore. Its been all Whisper since regional season. Whisper is strong against the weaknesses of the Decimator, and whatever beats Whisper, you just kill before the Decimator dies. I plan to win every game 39 points to 0.
