By Rakaydos, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So yea, I've been testing this list over vassal, seems to be doing well so far, despite my flying skills. (one Bwing lost all 5 shields to asteroids, was last ship standing. Vader was pissed.)

R2+Integrated astro definately feels like a fix for the Xwing generics, and their greater speed balances the Bwing's knife-fighting capability.

What matchups should I watch out for, what deployment strategies do you use?

Post said list please

Blue squadron Bwing

Rookiee Pilot Xwing with R2 Astromech and Integrated Astro

Bandit Squadron Z95

100 points.

Really, there's not much flexibility there... I pretty much said all that already in the title.

Question:

Why not all R2 IA X-Wings and a Z?

Different strengths- the Bwing is a knife range fighter with barrel roll and a 2k, while the T65 is better at keeping in midrange. Each shoulld have preferred matches.

That's a pretty nice list you've made. How's it doing against the different list types? I'm assuming games against other joust lists are pretty straight forward, but what about Fat-turrets, aces, swarms, control, or combinations of the aforementioned?

I don't play on Vassal, so I haven't got any experience with the IA upgrade; are you finding it (plus the R2 astro) add enough to the rookies to make them compete with the B-wings? I always loved using the X-wing, but the lack of an ability to reposition always killed it for me, I'm wondering if the extra durability can counteract that.

And finally, have you considered trying to add in a R3A2/tactician carrier(s) to improve your lists utility?

What do you mean by a knife fighter? And why do you consider X-Wings better at mid range while B-Wings are better at short range? B's have BR and 2k, fine, but I don't get why you'd consider X-Wings better at mid range.

White 3 turns and banks mostly I would guess. They are better at catching TLT Y-Wings for example, because they have almost the same dial. B-Wings have the tendency to be kited badly by those, so I agree with mixing the composition.

Exactly.

B-wings are great at close range, and can mix it up with things like TIE swarms. Their Hard 1 turn, Barrel Roll and short K-turn make them great at jousting and at knife fighting at close range, and whilst easy to hit, they're not easy to kill, so can afford to "go up the centre".

X-wings like swooping turns and slashing attacks, and can pull speed 3 hard turns (good for getting around obstacles) and straight 4's to run down something trying to stay at long range (HLC dash, TLT y-wings, TIE interceptors) - and with agility 2, can actually dodge meaningful amounts of fire at range 3. Sometimes.

Using the two B-wings as an 'anvil' and the two X-wings as 'flankers' should work nicely. And an expendable Z-95 never hurt anyone (except the poor so-and-so stuck in the Z-95 cockpit, of course, but he should have studied harder in flight school!).

Bad matchups.... Well, you've got the numbers to fight a swarm on even odds, and the firepower to shoot down Twin Laser Turrets easily enough.

I'd say Arc dodger lists may be your problem. TIE phantoms and upgraded TIE Interceptors are what really made a mess of these lists originally, and whilst the squad is now a lot tougher, you still don't have any boost/barrel roll options, have a universally low PS, and still only have 4 ships with serious firepower, all of whom are primary arc only. The "big new thing" of Vader, Fel and the Emperor may be an issue.

The trick will be figuring out how to make them come into your arc - baiting Vader and Fel onto one group of ships to expose them to the guns of the other might work; after all, despite their skills, you've got one 3-dice attack with focus, and one two-dice-plus-a-critical attack with a focus. That's not enough to kill a B-wing in one go and is unlikely to kill an X-wing provided you've got a focus token to help you dodge.

I'm not sure whether going for the aces or the emperor first is best - my brain says the latter, but if he's doing a slow/stop/slow/stop actually getting to him could take too long (especially for the B-wings!).
