Range

By Epixca, in X-Wing

Kind of a newb question here. Since you measure range closest corner to closest corner, please help me with this scenario.

I am in front of an asteroid, closest corner to closest corner, I am in range 2 of my target. But the problem is, I am hitting through the asteroid. But, if I use my left side of my firing arc, I am shooting range 3. Can I shoot from my left side, (avoiding the asteroid,) and still be shooting range 2, since that is closest corner to closest corner?

No, you cannot pick and choose your range in arc. The range in arc will be closest to closest, e.g. through the rock.

nope

THE only situation when attacker has a choice is when you and your foe are parallel.

As being parallel means there's a number of points equally distant from each other you may choose between them.

In your case

Nope

Been answered but - Rules reference under "Obstructed"

"The attacker cannot attempt to measure range to a point of the defender’s base that is not the closest point in order to avoid measuring through an obstacle. If multiple points are at equal distance from the attacker, he may choose one of those lines for measuring range."

Thanks everyone!

Since you measure range closest corner to closest corner, ...

Gonna stop you right there.

You measure closest point to closest point (in arc for non-turreted ships), not corner to corner. Sometimes that means the shortest line between two bases is from one base's corner to the side of the other base. (And because of geometry, if the shortest line touches the side of the base, that line must be perpendicular to the side.)

FFG shoulda gone post to post... as I understand it that's how WoW worked. Eliminates a lot of geometrical confusion, even if it requires different range rulers.
