infector: Airborne

By thedremak, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Sorry if this gas been answered somewhere. Airborne stats ".......each time a monster misses or deals no hearts on an attack, the targeted hero gains 1 infection token"

Does that also mean an attack that possibly couldn't hit do to lack of range? For example if I tried to attack something with a ranges weapon 13 spaces away (or any impossible to hit number).

Yes that would count as it is a miss due to lack of range. About the only way I can think of that would cause it not to count is with nanok's heroic feat which says the attack does not affect you.

EDIT: See below for the answer.

That's my heroes argument. Has anyone heard an official ruling?

No need for a ruling. The rulebook gives us the answer. I don't like it, but it's clear. I highlighted important phrases:

The attacking player declares which space his figure is attacking. The
target space must contain one enemy figure as the target of the attack.
When heroes attack large monsters (monster figures that occupy more
than one space), it is important for the player to declare which specific
space he is targeting because of attacks with the Blast keyword. A figure
may only target a space in his line of sight (see “Line of Sight” on page
12). A figure making a Melee attack can only target an adjacent space.
A figure making a Ranged attack may target any figure in its line of sight
(including adjacent spaces).
That is, a melee monster CANNOT attack outside his range. (Abilities like reach explicitly say you can target 2 away rather than just adjacent.) Ranged monsters CAN make "dummy" attacks at 40 range as long as they have line of sight, and it will resolve as a miss.

To do an attack it must be :

- against a space containing an enemy figure (rulebook p9 and p12)
- and in line of sight (always rule book p12)

- for an melee attack the target must be adjacent (for a ranged no such rules )

so for a ranged if two first rules are ok you can attack an hero at the other end of the map knowing the attack will miss, if you want !

Edit: I was too slow!! ;-)
