Prize support. Pilot cards

By darthkray, in X-Wing

Pilot cards "Vader", "Wedge", etc. will they make cards from the tournament prizes with different special abilities?

short answer: no. longer answer: noooooooooooooooooooooooo

clickbait. yet again.

bad wookie. BAD, BAD WOOKIE.

no treat for you.

Attack Wing did this, only with a die. It was considered the single worse thing that WizKids has done, and that's saying something.

No one should ever get a mechanical advantage over someone else, simply because they were able to go to an event.

I sure hope not. That was one of the major problems with the Star Trek: Attack Wing game; tournament prize captains had unique, and at times game breaking abilities. One of the great things about X-wing is the even playing field, in that everyone has access to the same stuff. Limiting powerful abilities to unique tournament prizes just compounds things where people who win get better stuff. Some people already argue that having certain cards tied up in otherwise undesirable(for them) expansions is pay-to-win, having tournament prizes sporting unique abilities would be that in actuality.

Wait, it was better dice? I thought there were things like a different Captain Kirk with a better ability, I never heard the dice thing. Jeeeeez.

Heroclix was the same way. You'd get LEs, some of which were way more powerful than their booster pack versions.

While that is pretty bad, I'm fairly certain Wizkids has "wizkids" things up since then. (looks at last year's Gencon)

But yeah, this is something FFG will never do. They have run from the "collectible" nonsense hard.

Darthkray, please stop making so many click bait topics.

And I for one hope FFG doesnt do something so stupid as this, that would be a terrible idea on thier part.

Now if the cards/pilots were then available in a blister pack with a fighter (either a different paint job or different fighter altogether) that would be different. It would just be hey here are some pilots that are about to come out this month but here is a way to get a different art card and get them ahead of time (by a short amount)...that would be completely acceptable.

If you want to kill xwing then yeah great idea

Really though, even the suggestion should get you tarred and feathered

OP, are you advocating this? Or just asking whether it's going to happen?

In either case the answer is "no".

Alternate art cards? Yes

Special abilities? No. The abilities are exactly the same.

(looks at last year's Gencon)

True, but that was more bad planning then bad game design.

And yes the die was actually better, had one more hit or a double hit or something, so it would roll on avg better than a normal die would.

To be fair about the Elite Attack Die: you could only use it once per round (replace a regular attack die and it had no blanks) and as a resource, it cost you 5 squadron points. Hardly anyone actually used the thing in their fleet at the time.

But prize exclusive items do create a much, MUCH more horrible tournament experience.

Indeed. I think they've done a prize support C-3PO? It's a nice "yeah....sorry, we know not everyone can afford a Tantive and this is the only card you want from it if you have no interest in Epic at all....."

Yes he is apparently the participation prize in the store champ kit. So everyone who shows up gets at least 1, perhaps 2 depending on how many people make it.

And again I must ask, how do you even come up with things like this?

It is unhealthy for the game and we should be thankfull that FFG keeps it at alternative art cards, which are amazing.

I can honestly say that if Star Wars: X-Wing becomes collectible in the sense of uncommon and rare items; things that only be gotten via eBay or tournaments; etc... I would done with my Star Wars: X-Wing purchases. I have gotten out of MtG, Hero Clicks; Mage Knight because of their collectiblity.

Alternate Art; different colour dice; dice bags are all fine with me. But a buff or extra abilities that cannot be purchased by all at their LGS is a system that I have no desire to be in.

Wait! Hmm... If they did I'd have a reason to quit after Wave 8; I need the cards. Think of the money I'd save. Maybe I'm for it and don't realize it yet. Serious some want it and that's okay; it's just not for me and I'd move on to other things.
