How important is buying the maneuver tool?

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Armada

Some of the stuff in the Wave 1 expansions are more important (And cheaper overall) to get than the core. Like XI-7s.

I should put a 5 together.... :D

Awesome but illegal

this is technically tournament illegal

Just don't label the first joint, and label the successive joints 1-4. It ends on the 4th joint, it's not your problem if your opponent starts counting at 1 instead of 0 like a sane person. ;)

I really wanted to keep armada a game I dipped my toe in, I had a starter and each of the imperial expansions plus a raider from sullust. I was gonna buy an isd and a second glad and that was it. $165 of sale later I still don't know what happened.

To the original question, it's really nice to have a shortened stick, but not at all necessary

my coreset just saw up to 10 games, but my maneuver tool is alreadly extremly shaky so i bought another one

It's not like anywhere in the rules book it says that the maneuver tool cannot have 5 sections but everyt has to have access to the same tool so 5+ is technically illegal

In a tournament, you could even make an argument the short tools are not legal. I can get lots of info from your ships when I see the maneuver tool line up as well, particularly speed 2 ships. I doubt anyone would enforce that and I certainly wouldn't mind the short tool used by an opponent when things get tight. But on the all important approach, it's best both people use the same length tool.

Huh, I haven't seen anyone have an issue with a shorter maneuver tool. I'm sure there's always that one guy.

I've never seen anyone demand to use a shared range ruler, when acrylics are on the table, either.

Most people seem to fly pretty casually, even at Worlds, so that's nice.

The 5 joint tool would be an advantage in set up and planning for your next move. And, would tend to slow game play.

The 1 joint tool would be an advantage in not knocking $#!^ over. And, would tend to speed game play.

So.....

My expansion advice: one of everything. The only real reason for a second core would be a second damage deck which is handy if you're providing ships for both people. I'm not buying acrylics so the second range ruler is also helpful. But if you're joining a scene and only need your own stuff, then skip the second core set. The Xi7 in the Neb pack is worth more than any savings you get on the ships. The Victory expansion is the only place to get Flight controllers. I haven't had a need for two at 300 points, but I can see wave 2 and increased emphasis on squadrons making a second a valuable addition. I also think you don't need more than 2 CR-90s unless you're going all the way to 6 for the swarm, but that's not a budget build.

I wouldn't buy 2 starters over buying the same ships as expansions. Primarily because the expansions have unique upgrade cards.

Strongly strongly agreed. DO NOT BUY TWO CORE SETS. One is the perfect number.

Not when you got them at Amazon's unintentional pre-order two-for-one deal :D

Its been a few months, and my Maneouver tool seemed to be getting a bit loose on one of the joints - mostly because I only have the one tool, and I often shorten it to 2 to run just Victories, and keep it at 3 for my AF/Neb group, as I rarely use Corvettes...

So, since it wa sstarting to get a bit loose, I just took it apart and hit it with a solid coat of black primer spray... Reassembling it, nice and tight now.

When it starts getting loose again, I'll touch up the black spray, maybe speckle some white star background, and then put a layer of varnish on it to hold it together... The important part about that is painting it on both side while disassembled to get paint on all of the future touching join areas.

Well, from a financial perspective (and using typical Canadian prices which should roughly map)

A second starter costs you ~$110

to get the same ships as expansions

Neb B - $21

Corvette - $21

Victory - $41

Manouver tool - $8

Dice pack - $11

Now I'm curious how the prices stack up with the MM sale. . . .

Core Set: 68.97

Nebulon B: $10

Corvette: $10

Victory: $20

Maneuver tool: $5.25

Dice: $6.56 (currently out of stock)

Okay, significantly cheaper (although a bit less so if I got the core set from CSI for 63 bucks). So looks like skipping the second set really is the way to go.

I'm more curious where in Canada a Core Set's $110... My Local has it for $136 right now...

I bought 2 core sets from jet.com with coupon codes and paid about $45 each for them. At that price, the 2nd set made sense for the tools and dice, and double rebel ships, and extra squadron stands to use for other fighters from Shapeways. I didn't really want a 2nd Vic, but the price tag was still worth it, and I have the big Vic stands to use for Shapeways ships too ^,^

I've built one maneuvering tool at 4, and the other at 2 — and that is really handy.

(at the time of this writing, jet just went out of stock on core sets a couple of days ago, but may well get them back)

well yeah, at that price why the hell not!

401 games (in Toronto) actually has it for 105 I think, my local FLGS has it for around 110 (in Hamilton). 401 games also offers free shipping on orders over 100 in Canada, so...your local is a little high...by a lot.

That's Hothgary for you, I guess.

In fact, I pre-ordered one of everything for wave 2 from 401 games and it came out to under 190 including tax, which is quite decent.

Pray you don't fall into the same collection frenzy I did.

I don't want to even say how many ships I have

its 10 imperial, 13 rebel...and 3 fighter packs of each....and 1.5 rogues and villains....AND I have 4 more ships and a rogues and villains coming on preorder....and I plan on picking up another 3...

I can't stop!

Can I get on your Christmas list then? Pretty please?
