Best/favourite Tie swarm?

By LouisCypher, in X-Wing

So, the Tie Fighter Swarm has been a thing since the beginning, and now it seems it got a new brand boost with Mov change and the addiction of some new upgrades such as Crackshot or Juke, not counting the shining tie/fo that can be mixed up with the classic fighter.

The question is, what's your favourite swarm build, and why?

Omega leader (ptl)

Epsilon leader

Howlie

3 obsidians

TLT ruining PS, great maneuverability, omega is a ridiculous late game ace for his price

Howlrunner (crackshot)

Black (crackshot)

Omega (juke + relay) times 3

The FO dial and durability add a great new dimension to existing swarms

Hang on, let me find unnamed squadron.

Black Squadron Pilot (15) x 3
TIE Fighter (14), Crack Shot (1)

“Howlrunner” (19)

Mauler Mithel (18)
TIE Fighter (17), Crack Shot (1)

“Scourge” (18)

I also have an alternate using ruthless spam. That's more for fun though.

It's important to note that while this formation starts as a swarm block, the intent is to seperate quickly.

Hence Howlrunner has no armour upgrades or anything and I went for heroes.

i did very well with this in last year:

4 APs

2 Alphas

Dark Curse

Edited by atr127

Black Squadron Pilot With Intimidation x 5

Howlrunner with Elusiveness

I've always wanted to try this

6x Academy Pilot

28pt inquisitor!

Omega Squadron Pilot x4 w/PTL

"Epsilon Leader"

Not gonna fly it in person until the Fo Expansion lands (I'm not going to buy THREE of the new core sets, screw that), but early online playtests with it have been very encouraging.

I'm also itching to try:

"Howlrunner"

Obsidian Squadron Pilot x3

Scimitar Squadron Pilot x2 w/Proximity Mines

I've had that penciled in for over half a year now, but just haven't gotten around to giving it a whirl, as I keep getting distracted by Bossk, Kir Kanos, Omega PTL Swarms, and various other insanity. Since it's been a bit, might take a look and see what other... modifications... I might be able to make.

I've spammed a few bombers into howl swarms. They are fun. Increases HP and seismics are nice tech.

More Classic:

Howlrunner

Backstabber

Doom shuttle

APs to fill

Gives you about the same HP but you get a three dice gun and crit effect instead of 2 APs. I like it just as much as the regular 7 tie swarm.

My favorite TIE swarm is a dead TIE swarm.

Hmmm, I was dicking with Proximity Mines due to (back then) the massive presence of Soontir. He's still around, but not quite as much as he was in the past. Idea was to Squad Leader Howl, use positioning shenanigans to snipe folks with the Proxies.

If I drop the Proxies down to Seismics, I still have a bombing deterrent out the rear, but also enough to squeeze Extra Munitions on both TIE Bombers and a three point upgrade for Howl (Hull Upgrade? Stealth Device? Push The Limit?)

Of course, I also lose the fun of try to snipe folks with Proximity Mines, and honestly probably my most reliable way of taking out TIE Interceptors. Then again, four Seismic Charge drops...

I'm a fan of the following 100-point list myself:

4x Academy Pilot

2x Alpha Squadron Pilot

"Backstabber"

Run each pair of Academies with an Alpha for additional firepower, and use Backstabber as a lone flanker. This swarm has no support abilities and relies on mass fire, but for that reason it's a bit easier to fly than Howlrunner swarms.

Obsidian Squadron:

Howlrunner

Night Beast

Winged Gundark

4 Obsidian Pilots

*drops mic*

HAH, amazing how well that lines up. Actually makes me wish I had more than four regular TIE Fighters.

I've also been toying with this:

Alpha & Omega

Omega Squadron Pilot

Push The Limit

Omega Squadron Pilot

Push The Limit

Alpha Squadron Pilot

Autothrusters

Alpha Squadron Pilot

Autothrusters

Alpha Squadron Pilot

Autothrusters

However, with only five ships in this "swarm", I honestly don't think it'd accomplish much beyond having a really fun name for the squad.

*Could always change the combo to three TIE/Fos and two TIE/Ints.

I don't mix Galactic Empire and First Order ships in a single list.

I don't mix Galactic Empire and First Order ships in a single list.

That would not be fly, nor dope. If a homey were to do that, other homies would seriously question the chillness of that homey.

Maybe one day the Galactic Empire and First Order will not be trippin' on the set, and the hood will know peace. After, of course, we finish off those cracka-lacka Rebels.

I don't mix Galactic Empire and First Order ships in a single list.

With only the one ship at the moment, I find that far too limiting if I want to play around with my TIE/Fos. Not to mention you'll probably need five of them to make a competitive list, which is pricey.

And I want to play with my TIE/Fos.

And I don't want to spend over $100 to do it.

For me, the clear answer is MrTyres's Patented Elixirs presenting

Zertic Allergy Storm! or Howlrunner's Antihistamine Brigade

Zertik Strom (26)
Accuracy Corrector (0) or Sensor Jammer (0)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x1 (0)

"Howlrunner" (18)
Stealth Device (3)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)

Total: 100

It manages to punish TLTs, though I built it before TLTs to punish BBBBZ lists. Strom's ability allows you to joust in for the extra dice while denying your opponent. It does wonders for allowing a Tie to live in places it shouldn't.

Lns and FOs work really well together, since they're both very similar but still perform duties that the other cannot (Lns being efficient and having Howlrunner for uber-synergy; FOs being more durable, more mobile, and more elite with Omega Leader giving the Tie Fighter family its first legitimate ace)

they also look incredible on the same table

the only reason not to mix them would be personal preference to not mix timelines for whatever reason, even though the EU already introduced a disparity of such continuity with Biggs flying around with E-wings and Z-95s

Now that Crack Squadron is a thing, some variation of:

3x Crack Squadron

2x TIE/FO Crack Squadron (Omega Squadron)

Either Zeta Ace with Crackshot, Howlrunner with Crackshot, or Mauler Mithel with Crackshot.

Fly it in one loose blob toward your opponent and wreck house.

Howlrunner

5 x Academy Pilot

Scimitar + Conner Net + Extra Munitions

Epsilon leader

Epsilon squadron x 3

Academy x 3

Really want to see how this does.

Somehow I've picked up a taste for named TIE swarms, with minimal generics.

Soon:

Howlrunner

Scourge

Mauler

Stabber

Blackx2

5x crackshot

My standard Howlrunner swarm was such a nightmare in my local meta that someone started running a Z-95 Assault Missile alpha-swarm to counter.

Which means that I got used to Kagi and 6 academies.
