Best/favourite Tie swarm?

By LouisCypher, in X-Wing

what do you guys think of a high PS mini TIE swarm?

something like this maybe: (not tested yet, just an idea)

Scourge + VI

Mauler + VI

Howlrunner + VI

Omega Ace +PTL

Omega Leader + VI

100 points

So you'll have PS 7,9,9,10,10. flying them tight in formation trying to get the best out of their exra damage abilities. probably not competitive and might die soon, but sounds like fun :)

My standard Howlrunner swarm was such a nightmare in my local meta that someone started running a Z-95 Assault Missile alpha-swarm to counter.

Which means that I got used to Kagi and 6 academies.

I always wanted to see a TIE swarm vs. Z-95 meta, but Phantom dominated wave 4.

I'm really the only swarm player in my area, so I rarely get to play swarm vs. swarm. It's probably my favorite matchup, not only because it's probably the rarest matchup (as I started playing the game just as wave 4 came out, but pre-Phantom domination) I see, but also because the lists are usually equal and it solely comes down to flying and asteroid placement. With genericwing, it seems like you always have a chance, if you have 3 TIEs vs. your opponent's 5, 2 of which are wounded and have lower PS, you can pull out wins. I like those end game scenarios where it's a TIE Fighter and a half vs. an HLC Blue Squadron.

I just flew:

Whipser

Adv Cloak

Recon specilist

VI

Howlrunner

PTL

Obsidion 3X

I also like running Soontir or Vader, and changing up the ties, with them, the ties have some more points to use.

Somehow I've picked up a taste for named TIE swarms, with minimal generics.

The fact that the TIE/ln All-Stars fit nicely in 100 points was always pleasing.

I'll be interested to see Epsilon Ace and Zeta Leader, to see if a TIE/fo All-Stars is a possibility too.

The new TIEs coming with the carrier are interesting too - as noted by someone above, Scourge is nice just to have another named guy with an elite pilot talent, and his pilot ability is quite a nice one.

It's a shame that Backstabber and Night Nurse don't have EPTs...

I'm ok with that.

Tie Fighters are still ok.

All of them.

Well, Winged Gundark's ability could be less situational like no range limitation.

Compare them with Interceptor pilots ... so many lacklusters amongst them.

True, Backstabber and night nurse are brilliant. I don't even dislike Winged Gundark.

At the moment I'm liking 5 Black Squadron with Crack Shot, an Obsidian and an Academy. I prefer to have 7 in a swarm and I'm liking the freedom of movement Crack Shot allows.

I'd add a single 25 points ship instead of the Obsidian or Academy.

A Gamma Bomber with EM + Homing would fit nicely PS-wise.

EDIT: Yorr + Tractor Beam = 25 points ;)

I'm still not sold on munitions and I like the extra TIE. The 6 swarm I've considered is Howl with Crack and Hull, 4 Black Shot and an Omega with Draw.

I think that's fine. Probably not major tourney good, but solid enough with skilled flying.

I recently took a miniswarm of named TIEs to a small tournament and won. It wasn't the "best" list I could have brought, but it was a fun list.

And that's what it comes down to. All the named TIE pilots have decent skills, and most are fun to get to put into action.

The real question is:

Are Crackshot based Swarms better than other swarms, like Howl + 6 Obsidians?

Are people having more success with the Tie Swarm since moving to Crackshot Black?

That's the question indeed and personally I've not tested enough yet. As I said earlier I enjoy the freedom of movement Crack Shot gives the swarm.

What about a defensive FO swarm? Something like so...

Omega Ace w/PTL

Epsilon Leader

3x Omegas w/ Elusiveness

99 points.

Kind of a pain that Elu and Epi Leader don't play nicer but thems the breaks. Probably not as efficient as a more offensive ept. You could try Elu on Blacks and maybe take more synergistic Aces?

99 points

Darth Vader (35)

TIE Advanced (29), TIE/x1 (0), Veteran Instincts (1), Engine Upgrade (4), Advanced Targeting Computer (5)

“Howlrunner” (19)

TIE Fighter (18), Crack Shot (1)

Black Squadron Pilot (15) x 3

TIE Fighter (14), Crack Shot (1)

I like that list a lot, too. Not a huge swarm, but it's full of good stuff. Ive also been flying a version where Vader drops EU and VI for another Crack Shot, and Howlrunner adds a shield. Vader joins the swarm and is less of a flanker or late-game ace, but the swarm is more durable and harder-hitting at the start.

That list has a little room in it, so I'm looking forward to the new TIE pilots other than Scourge -- I'm hoping for someone at 15-16 points with an EPT.

Not sure actually. I'd have to test both against top of the line players playing top of the line lists.

I kind of autolost with a 6x Crackshot list against a Super Dash + Poe list. You simply don't have the capability to guess where Dash will end up, and even if you did there would be no way to catch up with Dash to block it. You also kind of don't have enough ships to just line them across your whole starting area and have it collapse on Dash like you do with 8x Academy or whatever. Maybe you could try with 6 ships, but I imagine you'd lose one and then you'd have to block with only 5 ships.
