Ideas for more Obstacle types?

By DarthEnderX, in X-Wing

So, I like that we have Asteroids and Debris fields.

Just wondering if anyone else has new ideas for other types of Obstacles.

For example:

Dust Cloud

Has no effect on a ship flying over one, however, you can't attack a ship that's beyond Range 1 if that attack overlaps the Dust Cloud token.

Much like how Debris tokens are generally larger than Asteroid tokens, Dust Clouds tokens would be even larger.

How about nebula rather than dust cloud. Obstructs attacks as per usual but, a ship overlapping a nebula may not be target-locked and cannot perform target lock actions.

Ion storm: Lose action, can attack as normal, roll a dice, hits are 1 ion, crits are two. Can't be destroyed via huge ship, they just roll for ions as normal.

Black Hole; (effects are cumulative)

Range 3 = 1 extra defense die; green maneuvers are now white

Range 2 = 1 less attack die; white maneuvers are now red

Range 1 = reduce speed by 2; take one damage (shields first, then hull)

Impact = destroyed.

Trees, Mountains, Hills, AT-ATs.

I like the idea of having them interfere with TLs but your phrasing probably needs to be expanded since a lot of TLs are not actions.

How about Ion Cloud (props to Aturi cluster for the sweet tokens already), Obstruct attacks, when overlapping roll a red dice on a crit get an ion token, at the end of each turn a ship overlapping an ion cloud discards all Blue and Red TL tokens on it (makes TL use it or lose it).

This!

X-wing obstacles? Try having two kids HEYOOOooo...

How about 6 exactly similar asteroids, but on half, one side has printed a giant space worm or mynocs. When you overlap an asteroid, turn it over. If there is a critter on it, you get a crit, no dice rolling needed.

gungans. big clouds 'o gungans.

Obstacles with other special rules for deployment:

-may deploy after ships.

-may move after ships deploy.

-may deploy near board (sides). Not deployment edges.

Much larger obstacles with less powerful effects but more area.

Proxmine field. (more damage if you fly into it).

Huge Debris / Asteroid (completely blocks LOS)

Gravitational anomaly (roll a red, on a hit you MUST boost 1, on a crit you must boost 2, on a focus you must barrel roll 1).

Can other obstacles normally be destroyed by Huge ships?

Meteor/Comet: Starts at a random side of the matt, Travels at speed 2 to the opposite side of the matt. Moves at PS 0. If a ship is hit by it, take 2 red dice of damage. Regular rules for asteroids if a ship hits it or if it ends up on it.

Constructions:

When a ship's base or maneuver template overlaps with a construction, that ship rolls a number of red dice equal to the speed of the maneuver that caused the overlap, suffering any [boom] or [kaboom] results rolled. If it survives, move the ship back along its maneuver template until the point on initial contact, in the same manner as if the ship's final position had overlapped another ship. Once the ship's final position is determined, turn it so the side of the ship's base that is closer to the construction is in contact with it.

This was something I worked up for a racing event that I haven't actually run yet, to represent things like installations and much much larger ships that you can't really fly around or through. The "turn the ship" part is there to keep ships from getting stuck in corners, grinding themselves to death, and to let desperate or cocky pilots use the walls to make extra tight turns.

Mostly I wanted it because one of my favorite things about starfighter combat in Star Wars is the sheer number of times that people flying expensive, fragile, high-performance military spacecraft say "I'm going to fly directly into that big thing over there and trust that there will be a navigable path that leads to an important thing I can shoot." That's something that the existing X-Wing game doesn't really replicate out of the box.

Asteroid bases.

Land games with turbo lasers.

Star Destroyer play mat with turbo lasers and other stuff

Something I've always wanted to try was this:

Orbital Nightcloak

A series of tiny satellites that divides the board. Above these terrain pieces hangs a wire/string suspended between two off board items. From the string hangs a black sheet so that neither player can see the other side. The game starts and players move as normal with no idea where the other force is behind the Nightcloak. When a player's ship crosses the sheet, have the opposing player use yheir phone to take a picture of their own force and once the ship that crossed comes back onto their side, then that player can look at the other players side in the picture. If either player(or both players) decide to shoot at the satellites the cloak will be removed after a certain number are knocked out. You can use asteroids as well for even more suspence.

Nebula cloud:

Remove 1 shield. Remove all target lock tokens if you or your template overlaps the cloud, and you may not receive a new target lock token until the start of the next round. Roll a die; on a hit result, receive one ion token. If you are overlapping the token, reduce primary and Cannon dice by one (minimum 1).

Ion storm: Lose action, can attack as normal, roll a dice, hits are 1 ion, crits are two. Can't be destroyed via huge ship, they just roll for ions as normal.

Can other obstacles normally be destroyed by Huge ships?

Yeah, took me a sec to figure out what he meant. If a huge ship overlaps any obstacle, the ship takes a face up damage card, and the obstacle is removed.

Nebula (Obstacle)

When you execute a maneuver that causes you to overlap [THIS], remove all blue and red Target Lock tokens from your ship. While overlapping [THIS] you cannot be assigned red or blue Target Lock tokens.

If you are declared the target of an attack while overlapping [THIS], you roll 2 extra defense dice.

Asteroid Cluster

Blocks attacks completely.

Like increased fines for revealing a red maneuver while stressed in a school zone?

Cut a hole in the centre of your table, and get someone to sit underneath. At the beginning of each combat phase, they can reach through the hole with a sock puppet on their hand. Any ships they can touch are eaten by the space slug. :)

Using a proxy, cornor, or cluster mines as some of the 3 obstacles you can deploy. That'd be awesome. And dangerous!
