Leebo and Determination

By ssage, in X-Wing Rules Questions

In another thread somebody had suggested Leebo with Determination, HLC, and Recon Specialist for the 2400. I like the look of this, but I'm trying to figure out exactly how Leebo's ability and Determination work together. Say I'm dealt a crit, I draw two cards (Leebo), one is a pilot card, I discard that because of Determination. Can I then choose to discard the other because of Leebo? Or what if both cards I draw are pilot, they're both discarded?

When Leebo is dealt a face-up damage card he takes 2 face up cards, decides which to resolve and discards the other one.

If he has determination, and the face-up card he has decided to resolve has the pilot header, he discards that one as well.

Note that this result will be appx 41% of the times you're dealt a crit.

Ok great. I thought it might work like that, but wasn't sure. Thanks!

Indeed! Leebo + Determination = a 41% chance to ignore critical hits.

Also note that it says "When you are dealt a...". So if Sabotuer for example flips a crit on Leebo (or any other determination wielding pilot) he can't proc because the card was not dealt. Another quirk of this rule is that Leebo has to lose his shields, meaning your ability only comes into play after you've given up MOV points. Some things deal crits regardless of shields and these cards can be candidates for determination.

I pissed someone off so bad in a tournament once. He had leebo and determination and the whole game I never rolled a single crit. He was so frustrated.

Might consider hull upgrade, honestly...

And that's the mitigating factor.

Leebomination's ability improves as his damage mitigation in general improves. As Hits get canceled before Crits, the more dice you cancel, the greater number of Crits you'll encounter.

Similarly, the less popular a Focus action is for the enemy, the better Leebo is. With rolls and re-rolls, 1/4 of the damage that threatens you will be Critical, while Focus drops it to 1/6.

Meanwhile, you also have HLC, Bossk, TLT, and most of the Ion weapons dropping his effectiveness from a list perspective, and have oh so many boosting his effectiveness by boosting their native crit-chance.

Also, if you ever get to jump faction lines, try a Greedo crew on him. Its the best thing in all of ever.
