Anyone ELSE either a) break the chin guns or b) stab themselves with a tool (screwdriver, knife etc) because the dang thing is so flippin' hard to assemble? >

No, I simply filed down the inserts until the gun fit. I'm glad I watched that Sorastro video before I bought the game. 
I heated mine with a hair dryer and pushed it right in.

my guns broke too, i wrote to FFG using their 'damaged items form' and they were kind enough to send me the replacement parts for free. excellent customer service if you ask me!
A good tip is to dump the head and the gun in nearly boiling hot water and letting it sit there for a few minutes before easily sliding the gun into place. And as a guide to how hot basically just turn on your faucet and wait til its ho enough to let off steam.
Put atst head under hot water for just a few secondsand it will slip right in.
