Timeline appropriate and canon only ships sound like casual tournament ideas, along with "wave 1-3 only" or "Scum/imp only".

If you want to save your hard-earned dollars (or perhaps the pocket money that your parents gave you), I'd stay well away from ships that have not appeared in canon sources.

This will also be a good occasion to get rid of a few cards that are OP, like Ysanne Isard and Howlrunner.

I was working off the assumption that this was the point of the thread.

no. I am being serious. When I'm able to get a new ship I have to make sure it has the right cards that could be most useful for me. I really need to get the right ships.

I would have gone with, don't spend money on a table top game if money is tight.

Why? Disney and FFG makes money from non-canon ships and canon ships. There is zero reason for either to discourage purchasing non-canon ships, and it would probably get most tournament goers to leave the game.
