Will tournament points change as we rise to 400 point games?

By Crabbok, in Star Wars: Armada

Raising the points from 300 to 400 is more than just adding in another ship or two... it also changes the way scoring works.

The current tournament scoring rules are as follows:

Margin of Victory Win Loss
0–20 5 5
21–50 6 4
51–90 7 3
91–150 8 2
151–220 9 1
221+ 10 0

In a 300 point game, winning by 221 could mean you destroyed 74% of your enemy's fleet without losing anything. A clear majority and usually a victory by such a margin that it shatters your opponent.

However in a 400 point game, that percentage is only 55% - just above half. That's a pretty significant difference, and now in a 4 ship build, you might lose 2 ships and end up scoring zero tournament points.

I wonder if the point values will change to reflect the cost of new fleets?

They already changed them. Compare the values in the original Tournament PDFs versus the newest version. I think they just updated the file very early, not anticipating the substantial Wave 2 delay. So, presumably, we were playing 300pt games using the 400pt standards for awhile there.

But I suppose they may change again.

Oh, interesting. As I was copying and pasting I remember thinking "Hmmm, wasn't it 200 points for a 10-0 victory?" Maybe it was. I honestly don't remember.

Certainly as point values increase, certain objective points will become less valuable. I would guess objectives that award points based on your opponents build might see more play - such as opening salvo, which would seem to scale well with any point value.

We noticed the change during the MaS, when I had printed out the latest version of the PDF and my co-judge had his older copy with him.

They originally had the points for 180 and then changed to 300, they still haven't released the points for 400 though (but have said they will change)

This ^^

On a related note, will the point values for mission objectives change? If we're going from 300 to 400 possible points, those 15 and 20 point objectives just got (relatively) less important.

I doubt that will change, as they're already set-in-cards...

But some of them go from Game Breaking to Swing-Making, which is okay in my book.
