Proton Torpedoes

By Netace, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey all,

So I'm messing around with some X-wings, and I am trying to assess the value of these high impact, one shot weapons. It seems like using several of them could provide decisive advantages in a lot of places. Example:

[This is an example. point value is near 100, but may be over or under by several points]

Poe Dameron

-BB-8

-Push The Limit

-Proton Torpedoes

Wedge Antillies

-Proton Torpedoes

-Predator

Blue squadron rookie

-Proton Torpedoes

- Weapon Guidance

IT seems that in a list like this, the opening joust could be quite devastating, and taking out either something high value, or a couple complete ships.

Are proton Torpedoes a good way to open a game? Are the Advanced Proton torpedoes still worth it, or are they priced out of contension? Are other one shots worth the effort (various rockets)? Are these one shots always good or bad, or are they situationally worth it, equipped to certain ships/pilots or configurations?

All ordnance weapons work best if you fire them with a focus for modifying results, and there are different ways of accomplishing this. Personally, I am a huge fan of Adv. Torps, but only in certain situations. Either way, I wouldn't stick more than two missiles/torpedoes on a ship without the extra munitions card, and rarely field more than one ordnance-equipped ship, except for proton rockets on A-Wings.

A bit more on Adv. Torps - they work really well on ships that can take both Recon Specialist and Deadeye, or on ships where Push the Limit is a viable option. That way, you're pretty much guaranteed five hits, although you are still left vulnerable defensively.

It's not popular, but if you're going to do it, you want it on something that's going to get the most out of it. That means high PS to get the Target Lock and intrinsic modifications (rerolls or Focus, depending on the warhead) to make the most of bad dice. The Wedge you have is solid because it is quite strong in both categories. Poe is okay, but the Blue won't get much done with its torp (for the points, at least).

Predator is the best way to make a proton torpedo viable. On a high PS ship you have the best chance of grabbing the target lock and then immediately firing it in the first turn of shooting.

The downside of grabbing a target lock though is that you have nothing to protect your from return fire. An exception to this is Luke (and Poe to a lesser extent) because of the inherent defensive ability.

Wedge with predator is probably the best proton torpedo delivery in the game at the moment. However, it leaves Wedge extremely vulnerable, so his ever-faithful lap-dog, Biggs, is probably necessary to keep him in the game for more than the first one or two turns of shooting...

Without predator, the proton torpedo is meh at best. Too often you end up rolling only 1 hit, or maybe 1 or 2 hits (and sometimes you don't get any eyeball results to convert into a crit).

My problem with torps on x-wings is that your paying 3-4 points to throw 1 extra dice at range 2-3. I know that they deny range 3 defensive bonuses, but as blade pointed out above, your spending your action on offense. Also while it make the most sense to put them on high pilot skill x-wings such as Wedge, Poe or Luke vs generics who might not be able to TL and fire in the same round, against higher ps opponents, it also drives up the point cost. Your paying a premium for those aces, its hard for me to justify the point cost for ordinance. Now torps on a 2 attack Y-wing ace like Horton, sign me up :)

Ordnance is very not worth it if you are only upgrading your primary Attack by 2 or less. Upgrading the Attack of an X-Wing from 3 to 4 for one shot is not worth 4 points. You would be better off with an EPT you can use multiple times. You are better off spending Target Locks on primary attacks to modify dice. See below:

Proton Torpedo with Target Lock only:

4 Attack Dice = 1.5 hits + 0.5 Crit + 1 Focus + 1 Blank -> 1.5 Hits + 1.5 Crit after torpedo ability ~> 3 damage per shot

X-Wing Attack with Target Lock only

3 Attack Dice = 1.125 Hit + 0.375 Crit + 1.5 non-hit -> 1.6875 hits + 0.5625 Crit + 0.75 non-hit after Target Lock re-rolls ~> 2.25 damage per shot

Is it worth 4 points to increase damage by less than 1 for one shot? I say no even though the Torpedo delivers more crits.
