2015 "Holiday" Vassal Tournament - Signup and Commentary Station

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Armada

My opponent did not show up at our agreed time.

It appears we have an imperial deserter.

Sent this in a PM already - if you can reschedule, that would be nice, but as you showed up and he didn't you'll at least get a bye for this round.

Onca vs. Gowtha on now.

Game is done!

Nice Opening salvo Ackbar clones slugfest that ended in a 9-1 victory for Gowtah with a MOV of 207 (Onca chose to go 1st). Here's the logfile.

First blood was dropped on turn 3, when my Shieldless AFMK2B killed one of the two Scout frigates that were hounding her, only to get shot down right away by Onca's Home one, his squadrons finishing my own poorly-maneuvered MC30 (1st ship dropped into the opposing MC80 side-arc).

Onca's Home one didn't roll too well on turn 4 and couldn't take down my Jaina's light (2nd ship masterfully parked in close range of a MC80 side-arc), who TRC'd her way through the freshly repaired shields and the remaining hull points.

Onca set his last Scout frigate to try and get a last round shot at my Home One to nab some objective points, but was short a round and noticed too late, the poor speed 4 maneuvering table forcing him to land in midrange and die from a lucky 9 damage Ackbar roll.

Opening salvo might not be the wisest competitive choice for an objective but it sure is fun, making the buckets of Ackbar dice even bigger :)

C'mon guys...play your games! Don't skip out.

No worries, I'm sure something came up, sounded like he was pretty busy this week. RL > games, sad as it is. :)

But we should also probably be able to get rescheduled for this weekend, if he doesn't make it tonight.

The busy holiday season doesn't make it any better!

Now we are cooking, with 3 games left. (Not counting the Iskander/Ceryliae apparent no-show/non-reschedule)

We've got 2 admirals in the pure win column: Darth Vader and General Dodonna, both only playing 1 game. The other winning admiral is Admiral Motti with a 2-1 record, Ackbar, Screed and Garm are all at 50%, with Ozzel going 1-2, and the losers are Rieekan and Tarkin, both with one loss. So still no real all star admiral.

Shipwise, Still haven't seen a 2 ship fleet. Green Squad (one of the two, Ceryliae was the other) is scheduled for Saturday. 3, being the standard is 7-5, while 4 ships are 2-3 and 5 ships are 1-2. The activation advantage doesn't seem to be showing through in the results of games. (And those 3 5-ship fleets have 10, 1 and 0 points, so it appears to be a blowout either way)

Squadron wise: All Squads and less than 50 points seem to be the levels to go to. (As of yet, All Squads haven't faced Light Squads, though if the results are as they are right now, we would have 2 matches like that next round.)

	        W	L
All Squad	2
Squad Heavy	1	3
Squad Med	2	4
Squad Light	5	2
All Ship 1

Looking into ships, in terms of just winners/losers: No ship seems to standout as the ship to have, ships that seem to win include Nebulon-B Escorts (4/5 are in winning fleets), MC80 Command Cruisers with 75% being in winning fleets, and Gladiator-1s with 70% in winning fleets. ISDs, CR90As, MC80 Assault Cruisers all come in at a 50/50 split. Between 30 and 45% are Raider1s, AFM2Bs, MC30SF, and VSD1s. Nebulon-B Supports clock in at 25%, and ships that haven't won games are the VSD2, CR90B, and MC30TF (Total of 6 ships between them.) Ships I haven't seen yet, are AFM2A, GSD2, Raider2.

Lowest hull type overall is the VSD with 1/5 in winning fleets followed by the MC30, at 2/8. The rest are in the 40-60% aside from the GSD (represented only by the GSD1).

Fleet types, you've got swarm fleets at the top and bottom of the pack with a good smattering of fleets everywhere else. Only two types seems to have gotten the short end which is multiple MC30s, with no heavy backup, and the Heavy imperial ISD/2 VSD combo. Semi-Gencons (though no one who has yet played has 3 Glads) or ISD-GSD-Raider fleets are in both about equally. Most fleets have at least 1 large ship, and are 8-7, those with Medium leads are 1-1 with all small (I think the MC30 is small) are 1-2.

I'll update again after the end of the round, and look forward to round 2 for more data. (I haven't seen all the objectives listed, but I may have missed some, and Gowtah/Onca only listed the MOV, not the points each had.)

TL;DR It seems to come down to the player and situation, not the fleets themselves.

Just played a real nailbiter with clontroper5 for our tourney game.

No spoilers in here!

Was it 166? Omg, my memory is so awful.

I killed everything but a Raider and Firespray, and you had +4 objective points. (well, you had 5 and I had 1)

I'm tired, going to sleep haha.

So, didn't end up seeing Rekkon last night; pm sent to try and reschedule.

Two games that still need to be played:

Dab Darklighter vs Green Knight (Today)

Green Squadron3 vs NebulonB

One game that may potentially be rescheduled:

Ardaedhel vs Rekkon

Unless FFG posts a new tournament rules by the end of Round 1, this will be our point scale (scaled up from 300 to 400 pts)

5 and 5 = 0-25

6 and 4 = 26-65

7 and 3 = 66-120

8 and 2 = 121-200

9 and 1 = 201-295

10 and 0 = 296+

Nothing up from FFG yet (and usually no updates on the weekend), so this is our scale for the tournament.

So Green Squadron 3 vs NebulonB was a very interesting and fun game with a gracious opponent. I learned a lot about the huge ships.

Final score is +125 for NebulonB, if I calculated correctly. 315 pts - 190 pts. So 8:2 VPs. All the action happened in rds 5 and 6 (apart from squadron encounters...of which there were many, adding so much fun and another layer to this game).

Objective was superior position, which I chose after electing to go first. A grand total of one objective damage was achieved by both players :)

From just one game, but still, I think a minimum of three activations are really important. Maybe only for rebels with those ISDs. Then you just need to fly those three well...which I did not manage that good. Fair to say that it would have been very very close if the huge ship from GS3 would not have left the field in the last moment.

GG, GS3, looking forward to another game soon!

I actually think the standard activation count should be seen as 3. Anything more and you're tossing another aspect of your list under the bus: squadrons are a huge one, or upgrades.

I can't see any feasible ways to reach even 4 ships without massive concessions somewhere (corvette swarm or light/no squads).

I did catch the latter half of HERO and Clontroper5's game. Was interesting to see the great position the Imps were in when I popped in; but the lack of black dice was really apparent when the two ships were hammering each other from collision-range and not going down. Also, ECMs, as I predicted, are stellar little buggers.

Bit embarrassing, but I guess it should be 415 (whole fleet + 15 objective) - 190, since we have a 400 limit. So should be +225, a 9:1. Pls update if correct.

I'll correct it.

I have word that Dab Darklighter / Green Knight is currently ongoing, though I am unable to watch it as I am at work.

I also have word that Ardaedhel vs Rekkon has been rescheduled for Sunday.

Green Knight vs Dab Darklighter (1st player)

Obj: Precision Strike

7-3 (367-256, MoV 111)

Darklighter will put up some images later (we both forgot to start the logfile!).

My Imperial Screed-bump vs. his fast-attack rebels with Mothma, two CR90s and two MC30s (one of them Foresight).

My objective did nothing for me today. Instead it cost me a lot of points (he got 9 tokens, me only 6 AND he managed to lock down my ISD for most of the game by flipping up cards).

I was, however, able to prevent him from zipping back and forth at will. I killed a CR90B early, lost a Raider, then nearly got his torpedo frigate (1 hull left), but it slipped away, repaired and took no further part in the game. Foresight hammered both Demolisher and my speed 0 ISD (Jaina's light kept flipping up a crit that reduced my speed!) at close range, but I took her down next round. Jaina's light nearly got the ISD, but a little bad luck (and a forgotten CF dial) saw it pull through. Jaina's light (and MM) died shortly thereafter, and his final ship was waaay out of range.

I'm half pleased with the game - I lost only a raider, and killed 3 ships, but it was a lot closer than that. Could have turned around at any time. A real nail-biter.

Okay! Only one left is Ardaedhel vs Rekkon, rescheduled for Sunday!

(If that actually isn't going to happen, let me know)
