Newbie Question

By Mike1977, in X-Wing

I'm considering getting back into this, from scratch... Have not played since first wave.

I want to play a simple game (from my end), something like 2 millennium falcons and whatever...

Is that feasible? I'm saying Millennium falcon because I know that they shoot all around them (360) degrees.

What would you guys suggest?

And what would I need to buy?

Also, is this the most active forum for x-wing? or is there a 3rd party forums that is better?

Welcome! You are at a great and active forum. If you want to check out a third party forum, board game geek has a good one up, this is probably the most active of the two. Since this is similar to another post I just made, I'll copy and paste what I told him:

"I started with a rebel aces and millennium falcon (assuming you already have core set). If you are looking for a core set, I'd recommend getting the new force awakens core for Poe and the Falcon. Poe and Han can fill up your squad points right out of the box. Han is a beast; very easy for new players to fly and is built like a tank to handle mistakes. Poe is a bit more maneuverable and is fun to play. You probably won't be killing it at the tournament scene but you'll be able to fly well in casual games Again, depends on what you want to spend. At an online discount retailer (like coolstuffinc or miniatures market) you can probably get both of them for around $60. If you can spend a bit more than that your options open up a lot. If you have a budget in mind and can tell us what items you own already, we'll have an easier time guiding you to a good build."

As for your question on TWO Falcons, I'd avoid that. Two would fill out your squad pretty quickly. I'd prefer some smaller ships to supplement it.

Are you the Mike1977 from CardgameDB? Welcome back to X-Wing!

If you want to go with two Turrets, try one Millennium Falcon and one Outrider. It would be hard to fit Dash Rendar and Han Solo into the same list, but you can take Chewbacca and Leebo with decent upgrades. Those two packs should have enough upgrades to keep you busy and try all sorts of combos with the two ships. It sounds like a fun place to start off.

This is the most active X-wing forum and one of if not the most active forums I've ever been on.

Yup same Mike1977

I don't really have a budget, but am concerned with keeping things simple.

If you don't have a core set, I'd recommend getting a core set (Either old or the Force Awakens one, though the Force Awakens one is probably better) so you can have a damage deck, maneuver templates, obstacles, etc. If you do have a core set and you want to expand with your plan of two Falcon-like ships, I second getting the Falcon and the YT-2400/Outrider. The Outrider is generally cheaper than the Falcon and it's easier to make a list with both ships than with two Falcons. Plus, you get a lot more options with the upgrades from both and you get a more varied experience with two different ships.

Here's an example of a list that uses both ships.

Are both core damage cards legal?

Are both core damage cards legal?

Yep, you can use either the new or the old damage deck with no problem.

I'd start with the new Core set, and then get a Falcon. I think I'd then expand to a copy of Rebel Aces, and follow that up with a standalone B-Wing.

You would have lots of great options from there.

Also!

Always say "pew pew pew".

I like the original core set, the falcon and then either Rebel aces or YT-2400.

If you want to keep it real simple, Aces lets you run Han with Chewie crew and Luke with R2-D2 and the very efficient blue squadron B-Wing.

The YT-2400 set gives several options. Chewie and Leebo are a real nice combo but for a super thematic and somewhat competitive squad I like Luke equipped with Lone Wolf and R2 and Han with Chewie AND Lando crew and other upgrades of choice, but usually the MF title and engine upgrade are standard.

Welcome back and have fun!

I agree with the guys above, if you want two large ships both the falcon and outrider are fun ships to fly.

As a very new player planning on keeping it simple may I suggest an alternative? In addition to a core set, I would get the Falcon and then a Decimator (or maybe Firespray). All of these packs come with enough upgrades (although not all) and would give you a basic list for both Imps and Rebs. If you go with the Firespray, you have both an Imp and the start of a scum squad.

If you're looking to get back in and want to have room to expand to a different faction in the future, the firespray is a good choice. The imperial one is not a bad addition, and it really shines when you upgrade to most wanted.

I would suggest that consider what you want from the game. What are your interests? Where will you likely play? Who will you likely play against? etc.

Example; I love the OT, play with my mates only, have never played at the FLGS and have zero interest in the tournament scene. With this in mind. I only own OT ships, play with my mates, play at home and have introduced a few house rules around ordnance.

That fella over there loves the game but has little interest in Star Wars, is very competitive and only plays at his FLGS. He owns a few of each ship, scours the net for tournament winning lists, watches games on line and competes in as many tournaments as he can.

Both are perfectly acceptable styles of play but have vastly different buying and list building strategies.

I would suggest that you look at the range of expansions, find the ones you like and go with it. You said you like the Falcon. BAM! There's purchase number 1. A core set is almost compulsory (to obtain measures, damage deck, dice, etc) BAM! There's purchase number 2. Purchase number 3 .. heck, what looks good to you? Buy something you'll enjoy and not concern yourself to much with what we say. You like 2 Falcons .. buy 2 Falcons.

Don't forget, you can play with some lists in any of the online list builders out there.
