I finally got a game going at my FLGS instead of my kitchen table!
We decided beforehand on a 300 point fleet. I made the mistake of taking my 400 pointer and just shaving off the fighters and squad-centric upgrades to get a 299. He pre-built for 300, with the end result being a full wave 1 match, sans squads. I do not recall the upgrades he had, but the ships were as follows:
REBELS
-
AFMKII-B
-
2x NEB B SUPPORT
-
2x CR90B[Mon Motha]
EMPIRE
-
GLADMOLISHER [Gladiator/Demolisher/ACMS]
-
VICTORY-I
-
VICTORY-II [screed]
The first match was abysmal. I did not anticipate the lack of cohesion that dismembering my list would cause, coupled with die rolls bad enough that my opponent was apologizing for them led to a fairly foreseeable Near-Tabling. The second match we agreed to up to 400 points, at which time he adjusted his fleet to incorporate fighters and I repaired my own as it should have been. The inclusions were as follows:
REBELS
-
2x AWING
-
6x XWING
EMPIRE
- MJR RHYMER
- SOONTIR FEL
- TIE BOMBER
- TIE ADVANCED
- 8x TIE FIGHTER
With my escorts in place, we started the game.
The Demolisher swept past the obstacles and tried to flank their mass of death, getting shredded by a cloud of x-wings after softening the lot of them up. The Vic2 swept around, buying time to position itself atop the station and slow to a crawl as the Vic1 curled around in time to vaporize Jaina's Light, and Mon Motha with it. The fighters more than earned their keep, the final standing being Rhymer alone with the two Victories. The Interceptor and Fel tore up the A-Wings, and the hardiness of those X-Wings ensured a margin of 6 points stood between victory and myself.
All in all, I am very happy with how it went. It seemed like another overwhelming victory until he counted the points and realized how close we were. Squadrons are a powerful tool, but they are also a great way to get points. I am somehow even MORE excited for the Raider now.
Also, a note on obstacles; FOR THE LOVE OF WHATEVER HEATHEN GODS YOU WORSHIP, PARK SQUADS ON THEM. They will be nearly immune to Ship-based fire. Obstructing an attack that only rolls one die means, in essence, it doesn't happen.
