Hey all, I'm fairly new to the game(2 months or so) but have decided to attend a tournament tomorrow at my local gaming store. It's said to be a casual tournament but who knows. I'm really excited as I just really enjoy playing this game. Any advice for a first timer? I'm still trying to figure out a list as I have almost everything in s&v and imperials yet haven't played with everything. Leaning towards glittercrack brobots as I love the ships and space coke is hilarious.
First tournament tomorrow.
Any advice for a first timer?
Have fun.
Take a shower beforehand.
Wear comfortable shoes.
Stay hydrated and fed.
Time your bathroom breaks.
Brobots might be one of the easier lists for you to break into I guess? But fly something you're used to flying and that suits your style. Don't get browbeaten into something that "they" tell you is better.
Take a shower. Fly casual.
I only say brobots as they have been what I've been having fun with. Ig-88 just happens to be one of my favorite characters/robots in the star wars universe. Shower, check. Lol
Shake hands before and after the game. Introduce yourself and make a point of remembering your opponent's name. Be polite, but realize you don't need to let someone walk all over you and take back every mistake in the name of, "Fly Casual,"- The important thing is to be polite about that stuff, equitable in its application (So don't ask to take a forgotten action if you don't want your opponent to), and understand that it is acceptable to call a judge over in the event of a rule dispute- It's the judges job to decide if calling them over was inappropriate (and usually it is appropriate to call them over), not your opponent's. Understand that tournaments do bring out a greater degree of competition, so don't get discouraged if you lose. Print out a copy of your list prior to the tournament. Have your obstacles marked in some way to preempt any disputes.
*That being said, I highly recommend bringing a copy of the Rules Reference Guide and FAQ in either physical or electronic form.

Then fly them. You want to fly your best so you shouldn't take a new list.
And the shower, not just for your opponents, but you also do feel better yourself.
I think I might know you- Do you happen to live in Drury Lane? Hee hee.
Take your time and think about moves and abilities. My first tournament I forgot to use Autothrusters and turn a blank to evade. Could have made a big difference. Most players are pretty nice, but there are a few out there that take it a little too serious and can be jerks.
Don't be afraid to ask questions or question something when it doesn't look or feel right.
Yeah. As already said
Bathe
Eat and drink before hand with easy to handle snacks during play
Remember your opponents' name. Use it a few times in the opening rounds to help you
Shake hands
When your ships get destroyed put them somewhere where you won't be worried they will get knocked down or accidently picked up with someone else's squads.
Same with valuables. Don't leave them on the table if you are going to worry about them instead of focussing on the game.
Be cheerful
If you are this new, watch and learn from your opponent. What tricks are they playing, how do they cope with asteroids. It is the best way to pick up strategy.
Have fun. Even if you win worlds you're not getting a million bucks
Must we live up to the cliche that all gamers are sweaty, unwashed weirdos by making the first piece of advice: "have a shower"? Seriously, who goes out to spend the whole day with other people without undertaking proper personal hygiene first?

It's possible community pressure has discouraged the practice, but this at least used to be a very real problem at conventions.
Dr Zoidberg (ha, my autocorrect actually has Zoidberg in it!), its not a cliche. I've been to many a store/tourney with the unmistakably funk of the unwashed. It is a simple, decent thing to do that helps combat the cliche.
To OP, just have fun. It is a game, make sure you enjoy it.

Good advice, I played a few practice games today and forgot to use glitterstim and crackshot when they could have really made a difference. Just need to slow down sometimes.

Not all, it only takes one :/ Last week it was a D&D player playing in the same space. X-wing players tend to be pretty good about personal hygiene.
As for advice, let your oponent know that you're new. While they won't take it easy on you, they are more likely to help out if you forget something.
Bring can of air freshener as a not so subtle reminder to others of their personal hygiene. Be nice and warn them to close their eyes first before you start spraying.
Seriously though...As a new player myself with only one tournament recently just relax and fly something you enjoy. It really doesn't matter if you win or not. I went 2 and 2 in four matches flying 4 B wings and learned a lot from each match. I did make some mistakes, forgot fire control a few times and misjudged a few rocks, but it was an enjoyable evening. I have two more tournaments lined up over the next month and look forward to trialing a serious contentention squad to see how I go and in preparation for next years store championships.
I took a small notebook along and kept a log of the matches I played. Names of people, lists flown against, MOV points for matches. Later I went back and made some notes for reference about each match. What I could have done better and what tactics my opponent used that caught me or were effective.
Edited by UumbukuSit when you can. Bring a tray/box so you can easily move from table to table.
So the tournament was an absolute blast! All my opponents were extremely nice and respectful, even grabbed a beer with one of my opponents afterwards. I got absolutely stomped but it was yhe best time ive ever had losing lol. A few games were close but there were a few mistakes I made that made a difference. I definitely leatned a lot and walked away with some cool prizes. The only people I came out on top of was a 9 and 10 year old, which was really cool to see kids so young enjoying themselves so much.

To be fair, the nose is quite adept at ignoring one's own funk, so I can see how some people get to the point of reeking without noticing or caring.
I mean, you ever encounter a smoker who smells so bad you can taste the tobacco in the air around them?
A shower is fine and all but I always take a stick of deodorant with me and apply between each match. I'm not a particularly sweaty person but when I go to a tournament whether it's a local OP one or Worlds I always have some nerves and a surge of adrenaline before the start of each match and that makes me sweat like crazy. Moral of the story is a shower is only as good as the last time you used deodorant.

My last tournament had a kid around 9 running 4 Thug Ywings with Ion Turrets, BTL-A4, and R4 Agromechs. He ended up winning it with no losses. Even beat his dad.
