Help them know fear?

By Darkcloak, in X-Wing

Okay, looking for all the crazy eyed swarm pilots out there to help me out on this one.

I am pretty new, and I'm having trouble with my swarm. I feel like when I set it up I have a pretty decent plan, and in the couple games I've actually gotten to play with the whole thing I have done well. But I feel like mid game I kind of don't know what to do. I know this is an old topic but enlighten me. I've read all our forum guides and Google isn't much help. Wants me to read Reddit blogs, ha! Yeah right.

Anyways. Here is my current swarm list and a bit of an idea of what I'm thinking when I play it.

Soontir Fel + Elusiveness

1x Scimitar Pilot

2x Academy Pilots

2x Epsilon Pilots

Or some variation thereof. I always try to fly in one big formation or just one long line, I don't like to split up because one side is always left doing nothing. I guess I'm okay up until about mid game and then it kind of turns into a crap shoot. How do I avoid this and maintain control of gameplay? Can't pick apart a swarm that can adapt to anything right?

What ships do you own? Are you trying to make something work with only the 6 ships in your post?

The Scimitar might give you some trouble because the dial is a bit different from the other Ties. It does not have a 1 Turn, and the 2 Turn is red. I would drop it down to another Tie Fighter.

I would run Soontir with Push the Limit (Comes with the A-Wing or Imperial Aces) at a minimum as well. He should be run separate from the rest of the group. With 3 actions he should not give you too much trouble running him split from the rest of the group, his boost and barrel roll will make it easier to keep him in the fight.

Swarms Arnt that friendly to new players it takes a while to know where a ship ends up when flying in close formation it's very easy to crash.

Leave about an inch between each ship you'll overlap alot less.

Don't be afraid to separate fel he's fast and catching enemy ships in the flank is something interceptors do well.

Remember no one was good right from the off everyone of us did plenty of crashing and made silly mistakes the key is practice.

And remember to focus on one target till it's dead don't get distracted.

Go go gadget Howlrunner!

Yeah I pretty much have just those six ships. Just got a Tie Advanced and there is a replacement Interceptor on the way as well.

The Bomber I can live without, but I really like the idea of having two squints lead by Vader. Ho hum! New ships, new ideas. Lol. That Vader series got me hooked on the man in black again.

I am wondering now though... Should I trade the FOs? They're fine and all, but... 3 points. Two ships, that's SIX points! That's half a Tie!

Nothing to stop you using your TIE/fo as TIE/in in friendly games for now unless your opponent is a nut job. That will free up points for howlrunner who is really good at the centre of a swarm.

You mean as Tie/ln right?

Well push the limit on fel would be the best way to go

Yeah PtL Soonts is gravy, but I dislike the typical builds.

Took Vader and Fel out with Mithel and Curse today vs Whisper and the Decorator pilot who changes a blink to a crit. Lost the first match because I flew Soontir off the map turn 1. Bad placement. Lesson learned. Check your deployment. Lost. Rematch time. This time I lost Vader but vaped both enemy ships. Soontir got slippery with Whisper and was able to pull off a big fat R1 from behind. Mithel zoomed up on the VT, grabbed Marksmanship and blasted the last 4 hull.

So maybe a 4 ship list is more my style? Not gonna give up on the swarm though. I have enough ships, lol.
