(RPG)The Travelling Tome of Iuchi

By Shinjo Yosama, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

This tome appears to be a collection of fine vellum sheets inside of a non descript animal hide bag that resembles a saddlebag at first glance. The bag actually opens much like a western style book, the animal hide covering, and protecting the pages within it. The vellum pages are illuminated mostly by the handwritten script of Iuchi himself, or so the tales suggest. These are his notes taken during the Ki-Rin's exodus from Rokugan. The foundations of meishodo itself are said to be found inside the numerous pages of this ancient tome. It is not for certain who holds the tome currently. Last suspected users of the tome were Iuchi Lixue, and before her, Iuchi Karasu. Some of the following pages are among those secrets held bound in the pages this tome have found their way into the rumors spread about the Iuchi family among other families of Rokugan.

Rokugani Calender Year 63

I am now approaching my later years as I write this. We the Ki-Rin have traveled past the Burning Sands and are now the guest of some coastal warlords. Their shamanistic leader speaks of a power that dwells in all living things, even within the planet itself. He has instructed me how to see these lines of living energy. How they flow along lines of magnetic pull from deep within the planet itself. How they cross, and form an even greater pool of energy. The rivers of energy he calls ley lines, the pools he calls a nexus. One thing to note about the nexus is you will often find people settling there, or it will be a place of majestic natural beauty. I have learned much from this elder of his people about our world, and the power of nature itself.

Rokugani Calender Year 65

I have made some breakthroughs with the teachings of the elder shaman. I have found that it does not invalidate my faith in Shinjo, or Ameterasu at all, but rather strengthens my faith, and helps me understand my Liege Lady Kami. I do not envy the weight she carries upon her shoulders. Drawing upon one's own life essence to enhance the natural into something more, something wonderful can be draining.

Rokugani Calender Year 67

The lessons, and principles I learned from the elder shaman has proven useful in my own pursuits of faith, and worship. There is indeed much potential energy all around us that can be harnessed. This knowledge has proven very useful, and I shall pass it on to a select few of my students whom I know can handle this truth. I am afraid those who are not strong in faith will see this knowledge as blasphemous.

Rokugani Calender Year 70

I was correct knowledge of meishodo is not for every student of the art. Apparently one of my chosen students took it upon themselves to disciple a few others without consulting me first. An incident occured when a young brash disciple got into an argument with a young brash warrior. The disciple to prove a point conjured enough fire to flash burn the young warrior causing him serious injury. Shinjo was not at all happy, and I cannot blame her for being angry. She sees us all as her chosen children. I saw the pain in her eyes when she realized we mortals were capable of such wrath towards one another. She gave us a lecture about being brothers, and sisters. She also had a long discussion with me afterwards about the use of meishodo. She had me demonstrate it, and set down some guidelines for its future usage, and restrictions.

Rokugani Calender Year 72

I have made adjustments to my tome. I have imbued some of my own essence into the tome to keep meddling eyes from garnishing its secrets. This will appear as nothing but a journal of my journeys, a collection of notes to the uninitiated eyes that read the pages. I have also warded it so that in the hands of a thief all the pages will appear blank.

*****

Whether this tome still remains in the hands of the Iuchi family is unknown, but that would be a safe assumption. This would most likely be one of their most cherished secrets, and beloved heirlooms as it gives insight into how Iuchi himself thought about the world, worship, and the kami.
