Imperial Raider & Rebel Tantive

By shaner, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello folks,

I am looking for some real honest opinions concerning these large investments that I am considering. I like these ships, but I am unsure of how much use they would get and I'm wondering if my money is better spent elsewhere. I understand that I would need the cards for tournament play, but there are very few actual sanctioned tournies in my area.

So, when do you use these ships? I assume they are for epic games and scenarios. I have never played an epic game or a scenario...are they fun? Are there any Video BatReps out there that I can watch where these ships are being used? How are you folks using them?...or are they just dust collectors for collectors??

Thanks for your info.

The Vader fix in the Raider is huge and xomes with cards used with many imperial ships.

I think it depends a lot on who you usually play with. If you have friends or a gaming group that you see regularly, then it might be a good investment if they're interested in trying Epic games or scenarios as well. I think Epic's fantastic - you get a lot more freedom in squadbuilding, and it's much more evocative of the movies' starfighter battles (especially Endor) than the 100-point skirmishes are. It does take more time to finish a game, though, and some people feel that it can drag on too long.

If you usually just play pickup games or tournaments at a game store, then you probably won't get much use out of them. In that setting, most people probably won't be interested in sitting down for the length of an Epic game, and organized Epic tournaments are still pretty rare in most places.

If you're on the fence about it, I'd recommend you try a 300-point Epic game (or a Team Epic game, 2 teams of 2 players with 200 points each) without any huge ships and see how it goes. If you don't enjoy playing at that scale, then huge ships probably won't change that. But if you do like it, then it's worth considering the purchase. Huge ships can add a lot to Epic games. There's the added concern of energy management that sets them apart from smaller ships, and their multiple attacks and ability to destroy smaller ships by ramming them gives them a uniquely imposing presence on the board.

And if you're patient, EdgeOfDreams here on the forums just started a series of articles on Epic play geared towards people who have never tried it. It's still in the introduction stage at the moment, but it looks like it could be a good resource as it develops.

I love epic play and have had quite a few games with them, but it all depends on you and the folks you play with

Thanks for linking to my stuff. Part 1 should already answer a good number of OP's questions.

My Huge ships definitely don't just gather dust. I only get to do a proper Epic game once a month or so currently, but I'm planning to do more in the future. Fortunately, I've got a good group of friends who are also interested in Epic and scenario/campaign play, which is probably the most critical piece.

And you can always use a Huge Ship as a replacement for 3 obstacles in a match too. It certainly changes things up a bit having one on the map.

1. Buy Tantive

2. Sell some_specific_upgrade_cards_that_make_rebel_turrets_cool

3. ???

4. You now have the money to buy a raider.

We have a player in our group that always does this. When I have initiative, I alway grap the raider first so he doesn't get to place it :).

C3-P0 is hilariously above the value curve of this game, when paired with a ship with 1 agility.

However, with the large-ship nerf to MoV, his era may yet be waning... if it wasn't for Miranda Doni.

Learn something new every day. That along with upgrades may tip the purchase decision scales for me. Of course I have other things ahead of them on my list.

Little OT: Whether it is future Large ships or Epic I'm sort of drawn to the "1 ship list" style of fight. Not 2 dreadnoughts slugging it out but more like the Ghost or Tantive fighting off a squadron of pursuers. This could be done today with some of the large base ships; but not at 100pts. Maybe 60-75 pt. range. Might not work at all though. I don't have enough experience to judge.

What does MoV stand for?

Autothrusters and TLTs dealt boost-turrets a great blow, but what's MoV? (Maybe I'm just a bit dense here)

A while back we actually tested the viability of a one ship list. Back when everyone was @##$%-+ about Threepio, we tested a 70pt falcon against a 100pt TIE Swarm with howl. Turned out we agreed that if we hadn't glitched the game with an unfortunate console fire and a total freeze of maneuvering, the falcon had a remarkably good chance of solidly winning.

But I do have one big problem with Threepio and it's not that he's good, is that he's categorically worse in all regards than Autothrusters and no one is putting up a stink about that. I'm annoyed with the hypocrisy.
