Death Star (trench) is fully operational

By Forgottenlore, in X-Wing

I started playing this game when wave 3 came out, and one of the things I immediately wanted to do was a trench run scenario, so I immediately started making plans for building a DS trench and started researching how to run it (obviously finding DagobahDave's scenario quickly).

I kept having one problem after another with it, but I have finally gotten all the pieces together and wanted to show off my take on the components.

The Trench itself

The power nodes for DagobahDave's scenario (not terribly happy with these, but my painting skills suck and I couldn't come up with anything better)

And finally, the bit I am most happy with. DD's scenario requires a countdown timer. He recommends just using a D6, but I wanted something with a little more "pizzazz". Here is what I came up with.

Now I just need to schedule some time to actually PLAY the scenario. (Then it will be out of my system and I can start work on Battle of Hoth ground forces scenario :) )

I wanna play!!

That is absolutely incredible - how did you make the trench?

I have a 23 year old daughter and when she was 12-15 we used to build diorama's for 25mm D&D / assorted miniatures and it certainly made the long winter nights fly by. I now have a 2 year old and 3 month old and CANNOT WAIT to do similar things with them and have toyed with creating a Death Star trench but haven't been sure how to go about it. Details, please!

Again, looks awesome. Let me know your address and I'll let you know what time I'll be there :)

I would love to play on this table.

I love your timer. That is a very cool idea.

Seriously Awesome! The timer is a great touch!

How big is the base? It looks massive.

That timer is beautiful.

Thanks, I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

You mean for the whole thing, or just the timer?

The total play area is 4' by about 4'8" (basically a 4' square with an 8" trench added in the middle.

The timer is around 6" in diameter. the bead I used for the death star on it is less than 1/4"

Very nicely done! looks better than my trench attempt. Maybe one day I will finish mine. I like the count down timer to.

It actually was a lot easier than I originally expected (which created all sorts of complications). It turns out that the height of a TIE fighter model on the standard 2 pegs is just a little bit over the width of a 2x4 piece of lumber, so I just cut some 2x4s and nailed them to the underside of a couple 2'x4' pieces of Masonite. I also added a some rubber feet to both raise it up a little higher and protect whatever surface it gets put on.

Of course, I didn't know I could do that when I started. I originally guesstimated that the trench would need to be a lot deeper than it is, which led to me radically over-engineering the thing. When I started I was making plans for hinged trench walls and removable supports so that it could be stored in as small a space as possible. Then when I finally did a physical prototype I discovered that 6" deep on the trench was waaay too much and made it difficult to actually use so I shortened it, but the over engineered plans remained and I did a lot of work I didn't need to do before I realized the optimal solution was to just pound some lumber underneath it.

So, basically, the walls of the trench are just 2x4's.

I've seen some other trench run incarnation before, but your turbolasers and clock are epic

The game really needs some tight terrains, maybe even canyon nets...

How did you make the turbolaser? I really want some for the co-op campaign.

YIKES!

Pretty cool. I printed out the same paper, but didn't take the time to line them all up. Yours looks much better. I didn't mount them on mdf and it's just rolled up. I also made my turrets out of cardstock.

I did get some of those little tables from pizza boxes and a ping pong ball for my power nodes. It works well.

I designed and cut them on my laser engraver. PM me if you'd like to buy some.

Th image I found was one, gret big, picture and my roommates are artists with their own large format printer so I could print out each side of the board as one sheet. Really simplified that aspect.

Unfortunately, I should have also greyed out the surface features some as well. The stark contrast grey and black and white make the surface very busy and draws attention away from the ships and features that are on it.

Yours looks much better.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

I was going to do that, but something stopped me, I don't remember what now. Might have been that I couldn't figure out how to paint the ping pong balls well.

Very cool! I'd love to see more pics of models on the board!

And yes, fantastic idea for the turn counter.

How come I don't see the pictures?
