About to twitch stream a game

By WWPDSteven, in Star Wars: Armada

Because it says the process continues- ie doing a slower maneuver and seeing if it overlaps. If it did overlap, you repeat the process and go back to step 1 which is move. At the end of all that, once you've completed a maneuver, you deal a damage to the ship that moved and the closest ship it overlapped as a result of the "loop". In pseudo code it might be something like:

1 Closest_Ship = null

2 move ship

3 IF ship overlaps an enemy ship

5 THEN temporarily reduce speed by 1, Closest_Ship = overlapped enemy ship, GO TO 2

6 ELSE complete maneuver

7 IF Closest_Ship is not null

8 THEN deal one face down card to activated ship and Closest_Ship

9 ELSE end activation

Sorry if that's a bit rough to understand

So, I think there's a actually a subtelty that this misses. By my understanding, rather than updating Closest_Ship at each point, every ship that you would overlap in the course of attempting the maneuver gtes added to a list of ram candidates. Once you get to the moving ship's final stopping place, you check distance to EVERY ONE of those candidates, and the closest one to that point--regardless of whether is was the most recently overlapped--is the one that is rammed.

I had this come up in a tournament game recently (I think it was a Sullust game?), where the most recently overlapped ship was not the closest to the final stopping position. We dug through rules trying to verify, and I'm pretty sure this is how it works. Unfortunately, don't have the RRG in front of me so I can't reference right now.

Oh wow, I hadn't thought about that! I can see how it could happen- a hard turn and large bases could very easily do something like that.

Yeah, that's pretty much what it was. A CR90 with nav dial vs. a VSD, as I recall.

I guess a video on ramming is in order. . . I will add it to my list.

I would rather take an FAQ clarification from FFG, if I may chose ;)

. . . I am confused. . . What needs a FAQ? The overlapping rule is pretty cut and dry.

If you actually read what I said, I said that I personally would rather have a FAQ clarification (since I understood it wrong) than your proposed video. I did not say that they need to change the rule, and it didn't even use the word "need". I also included a winking smiley, proposing some level on silliness. I sometimes wonder if you even read what you respond to.

As for reading things, my social skills and context interpretation are pretty low. . .

Ok fellers, lets take it easy now. Pick on me iffin yer wants ta. It took me 2 weeks to wrap my 'ead 'round basic criticals.

Lets just be nice to one anuvvah, k?

Only 2? I could of sworn you were getting into the weeds in that last podcast ^_~

Hmmmmmm same could be said for you I think. I can't see anything that I said about needing a change. . .

What? I said that I personally would like a FAQ clarification (this means that they explain the rule more thoroughly, perhaps by using specific examples) on this rule, since I personally did not found it very "clear and cut" (I even understood the rule wrong and tried to correct other players). After that, you respond by quoting my post and saying "What needs a FAQ?"... I mean, seriously? I had just said that I wanted just would like a clarification, especially compared to a video. So I proceeded by explaining even more thoroughly that I just would like a clarification (and explained rigorously that I am not talking about a rule change, just in case that was unclear before). And now, you say "I can't see anything that I said about needing a change", even when you even brought the "needing" up in the first place.

Ok then, since you asked so nicely!

Except that wasn't just about Basic Criticals was it? It was about the timing of Non-Basic Critical effects and their timing. I think I know where Viper was coming from now. DOH!

But it did take me quite some time to wrap my head around the crit symbol not being attached to the damage dice. Oh don't get me started! It was a dark time for me, and I'm over it. But now I am armed with practiced RAW looking to ambush my opponents with obviousness.

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL GAMING, DELIVER WAVE 2 ALREADY! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Well said. =P

Have a look at the post editing they do in Tabletop, you need to hit up some icons for dice rolls and then damage...

I wonder if you could paraphrase the action, so you roll the pool and get 2 hits, then add a CF and get a crit, then a little icon for evade pops up and you remove a dice etc etc.....

I agree it would be super awesome, but that type of editing takes hours of work, even more the first few times since you have to get the art assets, the editing software, as well as rewatching the video to get the right icons at the right times. I've been working on a project like this where we film board games and do post production. We go for comedy, more than serious play. (shameless advert: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjFLirUWTNLDQoFF2Je2USg/feed?activity_view=3). With multiple camera angles and graphics it can take 30+ hours of editing in post.

OK. I don't want to ask for 30 hours of work. But I think 1-2 would be reasonable. Maybe 3-4 at first as you will need to build up a library of assets for the game.

I did a powerpoint slide that could act as a demonstration here this is probably too much work for each dice roll though.

I like the idea, but I want this to be pretty non-invasive. I'd like to stream it live and not have to do laborious work on the back-end!

Can I also add that Steven is a gentleman gamer, he can see that his friend is having a bit of a rough time and helps.

Mind you I think his mate was having a great time playing and got really into it. I know my first game of War Master I was similarly engrossed. Thankfully I wear glasses as I think I bent some spears I was getting down so close. Keep in mind here that looking at the back of his head wasn't the most ideal view point for those of us watching. :D

I think too there is a fine balance to be had in keeping all the footage end culling some of it. The move that has the overlap that caused a lot of discussion should of course keep the discussion. You may also want to keep some of the maneuver tool testing various moves, but at some point it becomes hard to watch as nothing much is happening. The trick is to balance out my poor attention span with the importance of the discussion and the importance of the move itself. :P

Ah OK, can you do picture in picture and have a box for dice rolls?

PIP is DEFINITELY on the TO DO list. Need to save some cheese for a bit before grabbing another cam/mount. Wave 2 is releasing and my wallet is weeping!

All good points! Of course, jumping into that fine of editing might also be committing to more than I wish to commit to at this point. I'll guage it and see. Right now, I just don't want to commit more than, say, an hour to wrap it up and get it on youtube!

I have a rather old but functional Canon Camera sitting here, it will probably end up being thrown out I can and would be happy to pop it in the post.

I'm not sure if that was meant for Lyraeus or me... but I would definitely be able to add some picture in picture with that sucker! I'd call it the Amanal cam :)

I have 2, drop me a name and address guys.

I'm too dumb to figure out how to PM on here! Wanna shoot me an email? Steven @ WWPD . Net

You're the man!

You're the man!

I was not able to PM you either. . .

OK then pass your email or address to Steve and he'll forward to me.

One is a Canon Power Shot A560 the other A720, they have a smallish 2GB Flash and soft cases. Sending batteries in the post is going to be a big no-no so you'll have to look after 2xAA's youselves.

I have tested, err powered up the cameras and they do at least come on.

Beyond that Caveat Emptor gents.

Well at least one camera works. Too bad it came in cloudy, it was such a nice day.
