Smugler or Ace Pilots?

By Mariozi, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have a Sullustan,

I can't choose between a Smugler or Ace Pilot...
Any tips?

Thanks

I am more partial to the Ace career for Sullustans. They have a starting Cunning of 1, which does not lend itself well to the Smuggler career type.

But it really depends on your background and character concept as to which would ultimately be more suitable!

1. Smuggler's have more social and scoundrelish type skills.

2. Consider what other specializations you would want to pick up. Ace has a plethora of additional piloting specs, but smuggler has a wider variety to help round out your character.

3. Finally, take a look at the signature abilities. The ace allows you to single off against a fellow pilot, or survive longer in your ship, but smuggler allows you to make an epic and desperate escape, or to tweak your characters die results.

Are you going to be almost exclusively combat or are you going to dabble in being a Face? If combat, go Ace, if Face, go Smuggler.

The secondary specs in Ace allow for really beefy combat characters while the secondary specs in Smuggler provide a more well-rounded character with some Face leanings.

Assuming they're both equally available in your campaign (the game I run doesn't allow any but EotE careers since the others imply a military attachment, IMO), I agree with the part that awayputurwpn pointed out:

This works unless you are molding your concept around your choices, of course. I can rarely start character generation without having a concept in mind, first... but that concept does sometimes change and evolve to fit with things I find or imagine based on going through the whole process of putting together a character.

Character generation in the old days was so much easier. You rolled 6 sets of 3 dice and if you happened to roll a high Wisdom, then you were the Cleric. Slot Cure Light Wounds two or three times and maybe some other spell or two, buy armor, mace, rope, 10' pole, hammer, spikes, sacks fr all your loot, and some trained war chickens because they were like 4cp each... then cross off the trained chickens because your DM says, "That old gag?" but snicker when he didn't catch that you also wrote War Galley on your equipment list and you were on your way. It took you longer to read this...

The important question: what is your concept?
