I look at them like odd Awings, but... They don't seem to work. The named pilots are just more points in a death trap. At least B wings are spammable 3 red dice machines, empire can't afford them IMO.
I just think they are dumb. I bought one cuz I have to have at least 1 of everything...but I really don't like em.

39-40 points can be a real anchor of a build. especially with a bunch of ties to back it up.

Very odd, seeing as how they are bombers and not interceptors.

You'd better look at the generics as tougher, less agile TIE Advanceds.
I think the named pilots, especially deathrain, are pretty crazy but powerful ships, but you have to have solid support, as in, if they all gun for him, your squad may still be able to win lol. I think that's solid advice.
I typically build deathrain with AC, Conor Net, proximity mine, extra munitions, autothrusters. He is one trixy ship for sure, very fun at the least

I have played quite a few games with punishers and I find they work best as A wings that can block and take a hit maybe two(just not a glitterstim or frontloaded round of damage).
Punishers are about TORPEDOINYOURFACE aka Redline
and BOMB IN YOUR FACE aka Deathrain.
And yeah, you'l learn to love your super-range 1 torpedoes with Redline.
Super effective with Flechette torpedoes, because the FLechettes damage ADN stress (stress regardless of hitting) so you can derp-shot a flechette, keep the second TL, come closer to stressed foe and take a focus, becoming THE GOD OF RED DICE (5 hits almost every time!)
Derprain can cluster bomb right in your enemy face.
I have two. Did not regret for a single moment.
For just 1 at a time, I like to run:
Cutlass + Accuracy Corrector + Prox/Cluster/Conner + Extra Munitions
That's 29-30 pts of an accurate jouster that has a tool to blow up an ace, leaving 70 pts for a lot of squad left. I like 2 x Tempest + AccC + Title, Alozen + ATC + Title + Crackshot, something like that.
I suppose you can run 2 of them!

Oh please, I bought 4! I really enjoyed 4 Cutlasses with Enhanced Scopes and Proximity Mines, although it obviously is better to run 4 Bombers with Proxies and a Doomshuttle.
If you want to go for competetivity chose the named pilots, though, the generics are almost never worth it. Deathrain is a very specific meta call, but I'd say he even beats the Warden when it comes to Conner Net-delivery, just because it is so much easier to get your front up to someone. The barrel roll also is a pretty nice touch. Redline also can't really be run in a swarmy meta, but whenever your opponent has an obvious centerpiece he thrives. He will die, no question, but with his ability and some nice Torps and Missiles (I prefer Flechette and Cluster) he is going to take someone with him! FCS and Cluster Missiles just are a beautifull team...

You won't need to. Stress-pedo makes even filthy arcdodgers prey
and I've not seen any ship that took Adv protons up their throat without coughing blood all over the place.

That's 8 hit results to avoid and 36 HP to chew through.
I've been flying 2 with concussion missiles, cluster mines and extra munitions, supporting Fel.
I've been using them as an anvil to Fel's hammer, you get behind them, you've got cluster mines to deal with, in front, missiles. if you go to the side of them - Fel is shooting you in the back.
You try to get out of the way of Fel?... cluster mines and missiles.
I'm enjoyng flying it and I've had some decent success

95% tongue-in-cheek yes
Still, the TIE/Pun has yet to find its way into the game proper. I blame munitions and its movement options, versus those of say the salty TLT K-Wing, which is clearly a star.
A resounding no to using cutlasses as AC platforms. Tie advanced is better in that role (much better) because it is cheaper and more manouverable. And arguably more survivable, I think 6 hp 3 agi beats 9 hp 1 agi. So the punisher has nothing going for it in that contest.
As missile platforms, tie bombers seem better than generic punishers because they are MUUUUCH cheaper.
So what's left is redline and deathrain, which share the same fatal flaw as B-wing aces - 35-40 points tied up in a non-manouverable AGI 1 deathtrap. In the TLT meta, that's pretty terrible. Redline packs a mighty punch, but tends to go down in flames pretty quickly.

Its supposed to be a heavy bomber, not an AC platform.
And talking about the generics ... B-Wings + HLC are so much better in any case for what you get for 29 points then any loadout you can come up with a generic Punisher ... and even B-Wings + HLC are not a 'thing'.

can't find any reason to use the generics, though. Advance are superior AC platforms and Bombers are superior generic ordnance platforms (and also bombers). the named punishers, however, do things no other ships in the game can do
they are quite squishy, however, so it really pays to use them as a flanker
