Yay we are getting a new product to buy cause it has star wars on it!
Sure it's pretty cool that we get new movies and I think that they might be good. But it's gonna be a product based on nostalgia made by diffirent people with a bunch of focused groups and stuff added by producers. I guess I'm just in the mindset of: "Yeah star wars was great now give me something else". Instead of a new jurassic park and a new terminator and a new star wars...
But hey It might be awesome ^^
Just how awesome is it that we're getting a new film?
Pessimistic pessimists!
I reserve judgement because Disney and JJ both know that they can not have another Phantom Menace, it would utterly kill the franchise and no one will go see any sequels. It won't matter how much is spent on the next movie if this one doesn't do at least awesomely spectacular at the box offIce. They now what's at stake.
Disney did spend way too much money on the Lone Ranger and John Carter and those completely bombed, but they obviously did not know what to do with the properties. Star Wars has a set formula that is easy to keep, and at the same time is open to creative expansion that holds true to the characters and the story. When Star Wars becomes less than that...well we've already seen that.
I wasn't too happy with some of the story in the new Star Trek, ie Vulcan being destroyed .. but didn't think the movies too bad ..
Remember, Kasdan was a writer for this one ... And we all know Empire was the best movie ....... So far.. far .. away...
(Edit spelling)
To be fair there Orci and Kurtzman wrote Star Trek, and they're notorious for being talentless hacks *cough* Transformers *cough*. Even with Transformers being as bad as it is Hasbro still wants another four movies.
So who's to say that Disney doesn't want another set of prequels on their hands? Did the prequels make lots of money despite being panned? Did Jurassic World make tons of money despite being low-grade yet amusing sexist garbage? And will people buy the Hasbro toys that will result regardless of what the film offers?
The answers to all those questions is mostly or definitely yes, because as long as it's Star Wars it's gonna move tons of merch.
With regards to all the JJ bashing. We have to remember, Star Trek and Star Wars are two very different kinds of sci fi. Star Wars is really no different to Harry Potter, LotR, Hercules, or any other Hero Journey based plot. Star Trek is the true sci fi that challenges, teases and suggests.
What did JJ do? He turned Star Trek into Star Wars. JJ's Star Trek lost its values and all the things that made it 'sci fi'. It became a fantastic hero journey about El Capitano Kirk. It became Star Wars.
Can JJ deliver on a great Star Trek movie? Maybe not. Can JJ deliver on a great Star Wars movie? Abso-goram-lutely.
My real concern lies around Ep 8 and 9. Consider Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers (to a degree). The first movies were fantastic. Then the sequels hit and they seem to leave story behind and just fill them with a series of events that happen for the sake of an action scene. Seriously, WTF happens in Matrix 2 and 3?? I hope SW doesn't go down that path.
Never listen to critics. They don't know what you like and are paid to find fault and be snarky. John Carter and The Lone Ranger were both excellent films, but panned by the critics. All this crap about Abrahms and lens flares is puerile nonsense.
Does the film have a cohesive narrative? Compentent acting portrayals? Is it well paced? Good overall continuity and attention to detail? Abrahms does this consistently and well. He is one of the best Hollywod directors working today. Disney and Star Wars is lucky to have him.

Some people have their preferences that other people would rather not put up with. Surprisingly as it sounds there are those who like the prequels. Now do the rest of us have to love them too, of course not.
As for Disney's handling of all the copyrights money can buy some have been good while others have not been so good. Lone Ranger might not be a 1 out of 10 but it is definitely not above 5 in terms of good movies. As for Princess of Mars it showed it disneyfication when it dressed John Carter according to the comic books but not Dejah Thoris (I'm not going to show any examples you can google it up yourself). Does it rate all this pessimism? Perhaps not but to be fare I don't think it rates all the marketing hype that has been accepted even if it is Star Wars. Sure it could be worse, we could have Michale Bay with 500 planets and battlestations blowing up. So at least it won't be that bad.
Still I refuse to call a movie good before it is released.
The prequels weren't exactly panned by critics: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/star-wars-the-force-awakens/best-worst-movies-poll/
In reply to OP: yes, I think it's pretty awesome that there's a new film, and I'm quite sure I'm going to love it. If not, that won't be such a big deal, it's not as if any new movie is capable of ruining my childhood or anything. But I liked all Star Wars up to now, so I'm not very worried and I don't think anyone should be.
Dangit... I was all excited about the movies until I read this post. This group is right, Disney has run everything it's touched into the ground lately. Look at what it did with Pixar for starters. That little animation studio won a little Emmy for a short they created, they were bought by Disney and now.... Oh, they're successful.
But Marvel. Holly crap... They bought a failing business that had already had a yard sale on all of their major properties, and Disney swooped in for the quick buck before it sung its funeral memorandum. Between The Advengers, Shield, and the other movies... Oh, Marvel is doing really well.
Regardless, Disney has no track record at stuff like taking beloved franchises and making them successful again. Episode VII is going to suck!
...there really needs to be a sarcasm font...
I friggin' love you.
But that crossguard lightsaber is bloody stupid.
It may look stupid, but it's genius though. It prevents your opponent for easily chopping of your hands when you parried his blow (or vica versa)
I am excited for them. Disney has unlimited money to use for the three movies. Budgets can make or break films. I think we will all be pleasantly surprised how well these three turn out to be. Disney knows how much money that they have made off this move and how much they are going to make.
The good news is even if TFA is major bummer and crit, Rian Johnson hasn't made a bad film yet.
I also just want to say how happy I am that "A Force For Daniel" actually worked.
I do not understand the hate on Abrahms as a director. I love the Star Trek reboots and after having watched them at least half a dozen times each cannot think of a single problem with either film or even a continuity break. And yes I am old enough to have watched the original Star Trek on black and white TV. I booked tickets for the opening day 12.05am screening of Star Wars VII and by the trailers it looks like it will be every bit as good as the original trilogy films.
So the fact Eric bana just hung out for 20 years doing nothing didn't bother you?
The fact Vulcan has no moon but was given one for the movie didn't bother you?
Orion slave girls being in Starfleet didn't bother you?
Uhura knowing Klingon didn't bother you?
Teleportation from the alpha quadrant to the beta quadrant didn't bother you?
The cold fusion bomb at the start of the second film not having anything to do with cold fusion didn't bother you?
800 crew fitting into 16 shuttles didn't bother you?
The magic superhuman blood didn't bother you?
These are just off the top of my head but those terrible movies are riddled with errors and inconsistencies that make them bad as movies and terrible as star trek films.
It's a show based on science theoretical but still actual science and those movies crap all over that.
It's star trek in name only.
I wasn't bothered with Uhura knowing klingon.
Khan being a fokkin' moron did bother me.

But, at least the first one, didn't see the rest, they still were entertaining. Of course it didn't resonate well with Star Trek audience, because those are a bunch of nitpickers. Who cares if Vulcan has a moon? Is it that pivotal to the franchise? The one and only reason why Vulcans are smart?
I believe Abrahms is capable of delivering a good Star Wars movie, at least on Revenge of the Sith level. Being overly pessimistic is just as inappropriate as being overly hyped. The way you talk I can guarantee you that you will hate the new movie, because you want to.

Ignore lists are a wonderful thing.

And I don't see why I have to put up with the constant assbaggery concerning the prequels from people who still haven't gotten over them ten+ years after the fact. As much as you don't have to like them, I don't have to dislike them, but apparently any talk about TFA has to be about how awful the last three Star Wars movies were. A lot of the talk about the prequels makes me wish those same people are thoroughly disappointed by the new films. Chances are I won't be, and pissed off douches are only a bonus as far as I am concerned.
It will only be awesome if its awesome....

In theory yes, but I don't think there is any user on this forum that is never going to write anything that interests me, so I refrain from using them. Even if I disagree with any of you, I care about your opinions!

Had it been a hard reboot there would of been no issue but it linked itself to the main continuity then dumped all over it so yes Vulcan having a moon is a pretty big issue it's a massive continuity problem that can't be waved away with time travel.
It's shows the utter lack of respect for a massive franchise.
And if it is on par with revenge my pessimistic views will be proven right as that films terrible.
Revenge was the best of the Prequels and the only one I enjoy as a movie. It had actual acting and Palpatine was fantastic. The scene where Padme tells Anakin that she is pregnant is the only believable one of their entire romance. Of course it has issues that are worse than those of the OT, but it is likable and fits into the Star Wars universe. Jar-Jar can easily do better, but I don't expect more than this.
In no way does Revenge of the Sith deserve the predicate "terrible". You have not seen a bad movie in your life if you think that.
Just try to keep a bit of an open mind when watching EPVII, okay?
Edited by Admiral DeathrainI'm right there with you. I'm a Star Wars fan. I have seen all of them in theaters and grew up with Star Wars. My devotion to Star Wars is at a healthy level of fanaticism. (I own a Shero BB-8 and have subscribed to 3 Marvel Star Wars comics, but I do not have any movie accurate light sabers or other costumes.... but let's be honest here... I wish I could just abandon all my responsibilities at times and just surround myself with Star Wars.
) I unapologetically love the prequels. They told a story that helped make the original moves even better. If I had to pick which of my children, I mean, movies was my favorite I would still choose ESB. But ROTJ is that much better thanks to a single character from Episode 1. Episode 3 gave a new understanding to A New Hope. Yoda and the gang opening up can after can of butt-kicking has amazing to watch in Episode 2.
So, continue to enjoy all six movies. We all did. We stood and cheered in the theaters! I remember that more than the way post criticisms.

Every movie is its own animal. Differences in interpretation and depiction are only relevant to consistency in a wider canon. The time mechanics used to reset the Star Trek universe for the latest films have nerfed any previous canon in the same way as Disney disavowing the EU of Star Wars. It gives them free reign to change things and make a new narrative.
Science theoritical? Like pan galactic super beings holding court on lesser life forms, or phasers that stun. Star Trek is science fiction in every meaning. If it was fact the entire crew of the Enterprise would be suffering a range of maladies from their 5 years in deep space. It is a fantasy, admittedly with a few theoritical science technologies thrown in.
Star Trek is a name only. A trademark owned and profited on by large media corporations, as is Star Wars. There is no purism for ongoing franchises, ever. That would be the end of them if definitive boundaries are set that new product cannot cross.
I found both new Star Trek films engaing enough to watch more than 6 times each. I enjoyed the suspense of not knowing how the timeline changes were going to play out in the story. Of course they are not without fault. No film is ever perfect. The only requirement is that they entertain, and perhaps educate.
Edited by UumbukuNo film is ever perfect
I sure have a few films that a very close to perfect - for me. a matter of taste, mostly.
the new trek-films are -not- on that list, I quite dislike them. they are okay movies, the effects are very good, it's action packed.. I give you all that. but to me they utterly lack that "star trek vibe".
and -that's- the part that buggers me. if the titles were "bla bla something scifi .. from space!" I'd rate them as quite good/entertaining. but labelling them with "star trek pt 876/877" .. not.

imo, UNLIMITED POWAH!!!! was the only thing the prequels had going for it ![]()
Ian was absolutely glorious in that final movie
