Just how awesome is it that we're getting a new film?

By Darkcloak, in X-Wing

The thing with Abrams is, is that he isn't the best at the script. He isn't particularly able to improve a script very well. But, he is very much a great filmmaker. He has a very distinct visual style. And he is amazing with his casts. He gets great performances out of his casts. So I am very excited, since Dumb & Dumber (aka, Orci & Kurtzman) have no influence on this movie.

And we may not be able to say whether the movie is good or not, but good god, we can definitely say the movie looks amazing. Especially when you compare it to other movies that have released trailers recently.

I'm still on a high from the latest TV spot though. Stormtroopers going melee!!!!!

Because Blasters are for the uncivilized right? <_<

I think I know someone would beg to differ. :P

What, do you want Stormtroopers to shoot at Finn?

I love the riot baton thing.

It would make sense really. You also had Riot clone troopers.

965923ap.jpg " All right, move along! move along!"

And even Ralph Mcquarrie first envisioned them with blast shields and lightsabers.

mcquarrie-stormtrooper.jpg " Can't miss with a lightsaber!"

Add to this the flametroopers and it would seem the new order is more into brutal close combat fighting with less high tech weapons, or they figured out storm troopers are very poor shots and gave them weapons they can't really miss with. ;)

Can't say they are unable to hit the broad side of a barn, if the barn is no more. ;)

Sucker punch looked good it was a terrible sexist movie.

Man of steel looked good it was however 2 hours watching superman being a man child and mass murderer.

Prometheus looked amazing but had been butchered in editing with vital scenes missing and character actions making no sense.

Looking good means squat.

I've found the "Fall of the Jedi I-III" fan edits do a lot to redeem the prequels.

do they cut everything that's not a fighting scene? :D

ep2 and 3 had their moments, but oh so many others that completely ruined what little good was given in notime. the good stuff can be cut to 20min per film, easily - not that you'd have a good movie then, but at least you got rid of everything that's bothering you.

ep1? unsalvagable. has good parts too, but memories from back in cinema.. there. I'm depressed again. :(

;)

I will say that even my 60-something year old Dad hated the prequels, but really enjoyed that fan edit. Some things that were edited:

-Everything Jarjar says that is dumb or annoying (90% of his scenes)

-C-3PO and R2D2 being in Ep 1.

-The worst offending bits of the romance scenes

-Added in a cut romance scene that wasn't that bad.

-cut extra scenes that just didn't add to the story, like half the pod race and the trip through the underwater planet on Naboo.

-little things like the fact that Selbulba messed with Anakin's pod. So...it really is just a kid who built a crappy pod.

My wife and kids enjoyed the fan edit, too.

I'll try to have a look into these, thanks ;)

Sucker punch

Man of steel

Prometheus

it had PIGTAILS.

it had ZOD

it was... DERP.

With the OT showing how to make SW and he PT showing how not to make SW we can hope Disney and JJ have viewed the game footage and have adjusted their playbook accordingly.

I like man of steel, at least the more character driven parts. Sups wasn't the confident dude we usually see on screen, he was allowed to make mistakes even if all that product placement, I mean property was destroyed.

And I liked Prometheus but I'm still waiting for a directors cut to fix some glaring holes. I here executive meddling was the downfall of this one.

And again, look who was writing the script with Abrams. Even with a subpar script, Abrams is able to elevate it through his visual style and his actors.

the problem with hollywood (IMHO) the last couple of decades:

looks>story.

they put millions in fx and known faces, and next to nothing in GOOD writing, continuity, real acting etc.

-so- many movies out there where you go "woooow... that looks great!" and that short moment where your brain isn't flooded with fx - you're searching panic-driven for some aspirin.

(even the new mad max - though I think it is on of the highlights of at least the last 5 years.. SO good, till that moment where SPOILER!

they say "well, that's too bad" and decide to turn around and just go back.

I literally did hate the movie there.. for those 2-3 minutes^^)

And I agree. Thankfully, Abrams DID NOT WRITE Episode 7. He gets a writing credit, but the real writer is Kasdan.

That's just it. You know how bad they look when they are unable to hit anything they shoot at. Imagine now how lame they would look now when they are literally unable to physically hit anything! (SWING AND A MISS, STRIKE 3 YOUR'RE OUT!). I am already seeing JJ's not so stellar influence of adding "looks cool" action that makes no sense in the trailers. This is like Klingons rappelling from D7 D4 "Battlecruiser" shuttles during Into the Darkness when they should have had transporter beams. But since rappelling shock troops looks cool, yeah a special effects choice not a story choice. So they want to take someone alive? Did everyone forgot blasters had a stun setting? It worked in the very first movie! <_<

But the rapelling was kind of badass looking and added that intimidation factor.

EDIT: And that was no D7! No sir, that was no D7..!

D4, but still D4 is supposed to be a battlecruiser not a shuttle! and case and point with the rappelling. It looks bad ass but was totally stupid. Might as well be a bunch of Blingon Pinatas. As someone that has rappelled before, I would rather have the teleport please.

Sucker punch: It had dragons and mechs in WWII with clockwork zombie soldiers... I'm willing to put up with some fanservice for that ;)

Man of steel : I liked it, mostly becuz of him not being a frikkin goody two shoes this time. But then again I'm no superman fan.

Prometheus : Had a bunch of CGI, retarded characters and if it's suposed to be a prequal to Alien it has massive plotholes and technology that didn't match the rest of the series.

You are aware that the Klingon ship in "Into Darkness" was supposed to be a bird of prey, right?

Like.

I hate the design.

But there it is.

Just checked and it is identified in the film as a "D-4 class Klingon vessel".

Bird of Prey are still larger than shuttles. But yeah the design was terrible.

I hope that won't happen. Of course plot armour is impenetrable so main heros will still own Stormtrooper asses but as I hope for capable FO troopers.
