Help complete this Scum list, Guri, Kavil and ???

By kilos1982, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi I'm After some help/ advice with my Scum list. In the past I've run brobots but recently I've been trying out some of the other scum options. My local meta is rebel squads and imperial ace with mini swarm. Ive had a lot of success knife fighting with a Guri and AutoKavil, however I've been struggling to fill the final 27pts, last game I ran Laetin with mangler who survived the first 2 rounds of combat but then melted under 3x z95 and tlt y-wing focus fire. The theory behind Laetin was to offer a third threat to confuse target priority. Is the triple threat the right option maybe with a TLT Y -wing for ranged attacks, or decked out N'dru? Or am I better of running a couple of pirates as blockers?

Scum Triple Threat:

Guri 30pt,

Virago 1pt, Autothrusters 2pt, Sensor Jammer 4pt, Lonewolf 2pt = 39pt

Kavil 24pt,

Predator 3pt, Unhinged Astromech 1pt, Engine Upgrade 4pt, Autoblaster Turret 2pt = 34pt

Laetin Ashera 18pt,

Heavy Scyk Interceptor 2pt, Mangler Cannon 4pt, stealth device 3pt = 27pt

100 points total.

First of all, your points values on Guri are off.

Guri w/ virago, autothrusters, sensor jammer and lone wolf = 39, not 42. So with a 34 point kavil, you actually have 27 points to work with.

I think a thug with twin laser turret and R4 agromech would fill that spot best. It can hang back and shoot while the others get in close, and since it does consistently good damage, your opponent might turn to deal with it first, allowing your other ships to wreck more havoc.

That puts your list at 99 pts. You don't really need an initiative bid for much, but I would keep it as is. Its golden in the Kavil vs dash matchup, giving Kavil a hope in hell of actually getting Range 1 of Dash (otherwise its nearly impossible).

If you really like the idea of Laetin, well you could still run him as above, but with a hull upgrade added on for a tiny bit of extra durability. However, I actually think if you are dead-set on running a scyk, a Tansarii Point Veteran with 'mangler', predator & hull upgrade is ultimately better than Laetin, because you want an offensive threat in that slot (predator is better in that regard than Laetin's defensive ability).

If you go auto blaster Kavil with engine, VI is a huge improvement in many matches. He gets the better of all non PS9 ships for positioning and if you get to pick initiative he can be pretty mean to Soontir. Plus VI is cheaper. VI Kavil and SJ LW Guri leaves you with 29 points. 29 is a really awful place for scum :) You could run NDru for a heavy shot, but I think you would be best off with 2 PS3 pirates or maybe a PS3 Vyper for a blocker in the aces match or a flexible ship in a match with more generics.

edit. Guri is actually 39pts allowing stealth device on Laetin. So there is actually 27pts to fill not 24 as originally posted.

Lonewolf on Guri was for end game survival as I find that she/it tends to be my last ship standing.

My concern with N'dru is the 4hp where I could take 2 pirates or a Ywing for the same cost and an extra 4hp.

I have run Talonbane as the third ace with Glitterstim and Crack shot (with slightly different Guri Kavil builds), it may have been a lucky shot but I managed to take down a Vader Shuttle in 2 rounds of combat. stripped a couple of shields at range 3 and then glitterstim/crackshot for the range 1 engagement.

My other thought for a third ship is Mux with Ion Turret and Outlaw Tech so I always get a focus. I could then bump LW to predator on Guri or take the init bid. Mux provides a counter to higher PS ships and potentially sets them up for the knife fighters with the Ion turret...

VI Kavil w/ autoblaster actually kind of blows. He uses engine a lot, so he's rolling two unmodified dice. Most of the time, you get 1 hit. Yeah sure, it ignores green dice, but spending 32 points to deal 1 hit on average is garbage. Predator Kavil is superior. PS 9 is nice and all, but its a turret. PS 7 is usually good enough. There are a few things that negate him (like high PS interceptors) and VI in theory would help against those, but not in practice, because PS 9 is only good enough with a substantial initiative bid. Soontir Fel lists almost always bid at 98 or even 97, so your veteran instincts is a waste of points against him specifically (because this list can't afford that much of a bid).

Another option would be push the limit. With unhinged, its a reasonable choice for Kavil, allowing constant boosting for added unpredictability plus one action to modify the attack as needed.

Personally, I think Lone Wolf is better on Guri than predator. The only time I would take predator on Guri is in a 4 ship list because then it becomes too difficult to keep Lone Wolf on all the time. As you say, she's always going to be the last ship alive (if it comes to that), so might as well make her as hard to kill as possible.

Mux is alright, but I would take him with twin laser turret and bossk. Reason is that your opponent will sometimes try to keep away from Mux so as not to be reduced to PS 0. He's not very maneuverable, so twin laser turret is nice to allow shots on those ships that are able to keep out of range 2. Bossk is there so that if you miss on the first shot, your next shot won't ;)

Another option would be Palob. His ability synergizes with Guri's sensor jammer nicely, but of course, Palob doesn't quite fit in with only 27 points. You'd have to ditch Kavil for a cheaper y-wing to make him work...

I totally disagree with that analysis Blade. You build in the PS bid id you are playing Kavil for a hard Soontir counter, and guessing beyond 2 points for a PS bid beyond Whisper is almost always a waste. I played a lot of whisper and 97 or 96 points was extremely rare, even more so now. Furthermore unmodified blaster shots are unpredictable at best, but per the build and utility of PS 9(really shutting down Bro Bots and Dash) I lean towards PS every time.

But IG88 isn't packing VI as much anymore, and Dash builds are always 100. 99 bid and Kavil always moves last vs either. If you like VI on Kavil, great, but for me, when I spend 30+ points on a ship, it HAS to deal consistent damage or its just not worth the investment.

Kavil with autoblaster and Push the limit do 2,25 damage, in most situations it guarantee 2 damage, for me this is argument, because you cant modify it with green dice.
