Acceptable card use

By Netace, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Howdy all,

I am just getting into X-WIng, and I know I want to run an A-Wing Squadron, but I have a question about what to expect from the community regarding upgrade cards.

Let us say that I want to use 3-5 ships, and they are all identical. Example say, I have 4 A-wings with Chardaan refit, and the Evasive EPT.

Obviously, I must have the correct ships in my possension. Using an X-Wing Model and claiming it is an A-Wing is not acceptable. However, After I have bought my 4 A-Wings, I still need to buy the sets that HAve the UPgrades I want. Will I need to have a copy of those cards for each ship using them, or is it sufficient to have a single copy, with a clear indicator of who is using those cards? I understand that you can run into problems with people saying things like "These two use this, and these two use this, but this upgrade is on these two, ...."

I guess My point is I really would like not to have to purchase 3-5 copies of set I have no intention of using simply to have enough copies of a EPT for everyone. IS that just simply part of the cost of entry, or are there good ways to get around this?

Acceptable use of cards is on the table. Unacceptable use for them is to pick your teeth.

No, you cannot throw cards at your opponent despite the fact the rules don't say you can't.

I accidentally posted by hitting tab and enter. There is actual question now. :)

In Casual play you can just use a piece of paper as a proxy. In a tourney each ship has to have an actual official card.

From the tourney rules:

Only official Star Wars: X-Wing™ Miniatures Game components
are legal for use in tournament play. Proxies of cards and ship models cannot
be used. Third-party tokens, range rulers, and movement templates may be
allowed at the head judge’s discretion. If the Star Wars™ Dice App is used,
the app must be displayed in full view of both players at all times.

Hope you didn't mind some of the fun we had.

If you don't want to buy ships you don't think you will use just for the cards, try eBay. There are plenty of people selling single cards

This is useful, but I am not asking permission to use non Fantasy Flight materials. I am asking to use a single bona fide copy of "Chardaan Refit" and apply it to each of my A-Wings. (NOTE: Obviously this does NOT work for cards that discard themselves after use)

This, sadly, is pretty clear. I was hoping that the card in conjunction with the Roster would make for an acceptable combination. Thank you for answering!.

Alternative: play casual for a while, get to know people, proxy cards as needed but most importantly; be friendly. When a competition happens, if you want to try something for which you do not have the cards, ask your friends (ahead of time) if you could borrow them.

Happens all the time in my meta: we're all cool with it :)

EDIT: it's a better alternative than thinking of a cool idea, buying the ships and then realizing that it does not perform as well as you wanted... and never want to play it again.

Just to spell it out: in tournament play, if you have multiple ships with the same upgrade card, you're expected to bring multiple copies of the upgrade card. Same goes for pilot cards. Having one copy of an upgrade and just noting that it appears on multiple ships is not tournament-legal.

As everybody else has pointed out, in casual play it's between you and your opponent and most people don't mind.

You must have physical copies of each upgrade that used for each ship. This means that if you have four ships with the same upgrades you will also need four copies of each of those upgrade cards.

Sometime you may play with people who will let you pretend you have cards, and maybe even other things, that you don't have. It is best that everyone knows, and agrees, about this before hand. When using these proxies you may not even need one copy of any given upgrade and in some cases the upgrade may not even be available ANYWHERE yet although people will still use it.

For casual play you can bring a printed list although I would recommend having the cards for munitions and bombs so that you can flip them over once used. For a tournament you would need the cards but if you have some of them, you will often find that people are happy to lend you the extras if you ask nicely.

Don't want ships you won't play? Come on now then, you're going to want to play them.

I'm sure as long as you have a clearly defined list, and at least one copy of the card. You could also print off your own cards and play with them. But if you're serious about supporting the game so that we can all continue to enjoy it, then forking up $20 every so often isn't a big deal.

You know I used to see a lot of this in my other hobby. People want to proxy stuff and that's okay. But at some point, you have to "buy-in". This used to be a support the company type attitude, but then as the company got worse it became a consideration for the other player. You stop proxying so that both players can enjoy a thematic gaming experience.

Now with X-Wing there are a few things that are different.

1: X-Wing, even at the highest levels of play, is an inexpensive hobby that requires only a bit of investment, and lots of practice.

2: FFG is not a dinosaur and may actually care about their customers.

3: The rules of X-Wing are concise. You'd be surprised how much clarity can open up a ruleset. Once people liberate themselves from playing games with their nose in a rulebook then they can actually start to enjoy the game! At this point things like having all the right cards become a non issue. As long as you're having fun and playing by the rules, its all okay!
