Night Beast or Dark Curse?

Night Beast (fixed) + MKII Engines

or

good old Dark Curse?

Its 16 points each.

Which one you would choose?

As fun as it is to annoy people with Dark Curse, I have been finding myself liking Night Beast more lately... his ability is not bad, basically a lighter push the limit ability. It is not the most amazing thing but I like what it does for the points... and it can be used offensively and defensively, unlike Dark Curse.

I like to take both. Night Beast is cool when he gets his free focus, but even with the MK II engine I find it's too limiting. Often I will wind up maneuvering him to ensure he keeps getting that focus even when some other maneuver would be better for the situation at hand. So I prefer the curse. He annoys people all of the time, not just some of the time.

Dark Curse also got a fix, btw:

“Dark Curse” can be the target of a secondary
weapon attack that requires the attacker to
spend a focus token."

He's no longer immune to Blaster Turrets and Proton Rockets...

You can't beat a good old fashioned beasting...

Mauler with Crackshot. Well worth the extra 2 points.

If I was limited to 16 points, I'd go Black Squadron with Crackshot and TIE MK II.

Night Beast's free focus seems good but I'd be focusing with him anyways most of the time, so I'd want to maximize damage with the targeting computer, which pushes me to 17 points.

Crackshot is just that good.

Night Beast.

With Dark Curse, you'll find that the enemies you are trying to kill always have a token on defense, making it difficult for Dark Curse to ever actually damage a ship in a 1v1 situation.

Night Beast on the other hand welcomes enemy token spending by shoring up with a wall of tokens.

On the other hand, I've had Dark Curse live for 4 or 5 rounds or so in range 1 of Scum Kath's rear arc, almost soloing the Kath by getting some lucky reds to go along with the awesome defense.

Both are pretty solid, haha.

The answer is backstabber.

The answer is backstabber.

Of the TIE Fighter Pilots, Backstabber is my usual go to, followed by Mauler.

Of Night beast and Dark Curse... Dark Curse for psychology.

He was never immune to Proton Rockets. They don't require the spending of a focus token.

True. I should play with the rebel stuff now and then to get used to it as well :P

I got a list! I got a list:

[uNNAMED SQUADRON]

Click to change squadron details

100 points

PILOTS

“Night Beast” (16)

TIE Fighter (15), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

“Backstabber” (16)

Dark Curse (16)

Captain Oicunn (52)

VT-49 Decimator (42), Emperor Palpatine (8), Ion Projector (2)

The Unnamed Squadron with unstated details strikes again!

I would say it matters on the rest of your list. Personally, I like Dark Curse as part of a main thrust of my forces while something else tries to flank them.

Both are great, though. I love Tie Fighters.

I would prefer Nightbeast. There are plenty of times when in the thick of the furball that ships are bumping left and right. Nightbeast loves this, especially since he moving after generics that often get in his way. Otherwise if you do land the manuever, focus/BR helps get better shots, or focus/evade for great defense that rivals squints.

Oh, and if you do run dark curse, watch out for Biggs, especially at R3.

This - has made me realize I can run..

Howlrunner + crack shot
Mauler Mithel + Crack shot
Dark Curse
Backstabber
Nightbeast + Twin Ion engine
Black squadron + crack shot...

hehehehehehehhehheheheh!

NightBeast every time. With DC getting the slight nerf it's even an easier decision. NB with Targeting computer is a GREAT spotter for Vess; do a green and get your focus and a TL for Vess. Watch people chase him and just do the fastest green you can and Evade + focus. NB with evade and focus will outlive DC.

Dark Curse always.....that is all

Out of the two I prefer Dark Curse, he annoys people no end and as a result tends to draw fire away from other targets.

Although if I had the choice I'd take Backstabber over either of them. :D

Dark Curse can really get under your skin so that's who I'd vote for of the two.

Not that I disagree with taking NB instead of DC but do you actually encounter enough Blaster Turrets that the change even matters?

depends

are you a great fan of Batman references, or of your opponents unleashing bursts of obscene profanity?

I disagree with this. If NightBeast is jousting a group of ships, he won't last longer. I'm sure your response is "Well, don't joust with Nightbeast. What I'm saying is that I CAN joust with Dark Curse. They are different and how I use them (for me) is purely on if I'm expecting them to joust or not.

Of course, I love my Space Cowboys list:

Dark Curse

NightBeast

Backstabber

2 x Academy Pilots

Omnicron w/ Adv. Sensors, and Fleet Officer

Dish out the Focus to whomever you think is going to get targeted and you will see even Academy Pilots last a long time.

Sigh. I miss this. Just named ties and xwings and stuff.

I really wish the named ties got a little buff. We really don't see them anymore.

I tend to pick the Tie FO now for blocking.

We see them plenty in Atlanta. mauler mithel with predator is pretty close to the best 20 points you can spend.

I still use at LEAST Backstabber, more than often Magic Mithel.
