flipping crit damage cards from proton bombs

By Found Myself Floating Home, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I've got a question about proton bomb damage that I haven't been able to find an answer to on the various groups online. Let's say my undamaged x-wing gets too close to a proton bomb and picks up a "Structural Damage" critical hit card. My understanding is that this card ignores my 2 shields and takes effect immediately. So, essentially, I have 2 shields, 2 hull points left and the reduced agility caused by the card.

So here's my question- if on the next turn I take an action and sucessfully get the crit card flipped to a normal damage card, does it remain as hull damage, leaving my shields alone, or does it shave off a shield token and return my hull to full strength? The first option makes more sense to me, but I haven't noticed it specifically spelled out anywhere.

Option 1.

Face-up or face-down, damage cards count against the ship's hull, not its shields.

Good, that's what I thought. Thanks.

Cards are cards and once you get one the only way to get rid of them is if something specifically calls for it.

It would be possible to have a ship get destroyed despite having four or more shield tokens on it if it is struck by things that will deal it cards instead of dealing damage results. Porkins could even destroy himself without an enemy ever shooting at him!

The trick to remember is that damage doesn't 'reduce' your hull value. Rather, your hull value remains static and you are destroyed once you have an amount of damage cards equal to or above your hull value. Think of it in these terms and it becomes much easier to reconcile the way damage cards work.
