Brobots in the current meta

By zerotc, in X-Wing

I know I'm decades behind, but I finally picked up my second IG-88. I haven't seen IG's in the last ~20 games I've played though, so I'm wondering if they've changed since Wave 7.

For those that fly Brobots, how have they been faring in this TLT, ace, and stress-heavy meta?

PTL, Predator, VI, or Crack Shot? Glitterstim or Interials?

Still doing well. I think one made top 16 at worlds, and I know there were more in the top 32.

I started running Sensor Jammer with them. Works real well against tlt.

I think viable brobot lists have diversified along with the meta.

Extremely well positioned in the meta atm. And definitely some showings in the top16. ... if not top4.

Crackshot FCS HLC AT seems to be the thing atm. Just blow stuff up.

for brobots I think they both really need HLC. Having only 2 ships of dice I think you need the most attack dice you can get out of those 2 ships. So that limits your choices a bit after that.

First you have to go with IG88B. The second one can be argued between A and C. I personally like A better with the new rules. Sometimes it can save you from losing the half points.

HLC is a must on both. Title is a must on both. Autothrusters is a must on both. I personally feel like its the best ship for Glitterstim. That only leaves 6 points. So FCS on both goes great with your HLCs and gives you more punch with your glitterstim or a focus action. Then you get a 1 point EPT. Crack Shot seems like the most viable based on Philip Booths performance. VI seems unnecessary in this meta unless your going against another brobot list I don't see how it will help much. The only other option I could see is wired which lets you reroll all of your focus if your stressed. Its fairly easy to get stressed but with glitterstim and FCS you will probably have a focus more often then not when you need it.

They're one of the higher skill lists out there because they almost never have a PS advantage. Like Blail said, FCS HLC AT seem like core components for most builds, and crackshot + glitterstim give you a pretty good chance (>65%) to kill a Y with R3-A2 before it can ever shoot.

If you're trying to say that this is the best brobot build in the current meta or even a popular build, I think you're mistaken. Looking at the lists from worlds , the only brobot list with even a single sensor jammer finished in 178th place and the only copy of Wired in the entire tournament (that we know of) was on PTL Tycho.

I think we just don't see them as much anymore because they're not new. TLT might have had an effect, but I really feel people just got tired of running them. Or, maybe I'm just projecting my feelings onto the whole community ...

OP asked how Brobot builds were working for people who fly them.

I posted a build which I've found to be a decent counter to two of the meta components that were mentioned, namely TLTs and stress.

Nowhere did I imply "best" or refer to Worlds, so I don't know where you got that.

I think there were 2-3 at my local 14 player tournament.

Oh, neat. Was that this past weekend?

The Iggys are doing well. As stated above, with the must need upgrades of HLC, FCS, title, auto thrusters, it leaves a few options open. Both at the illicit and EPT slots. I agree, glitter stem is great. High amount of attack dice and evade dice. It just works well. Once had two interceptors and a Tie advanced popping range two shots off at my IG88B. Popped glitter stem, no damage. It was great, helped me win that round. As far as EPT go, with only a 1 point option, well here are your options.

1. VI. plus 2 PS will only help once in a while. You either fly against Imperial/rebel aces or swarms of some sort, so, being PS 6 isn't anymore a help than PS 8.

2. Wired: It is great, no doubt, might just keep you alive.

3. Crack shot: A one time use, but useful

4. Deadeye: useless.

5. Determination/draw their fire/calculation. Not bad, but better options

6. Cool Hand: I like this. Another one shot. trade a stress for the focus or evade. I can see it being used

7. Adrenaline rush. I like this one. I know I'm not with the majority on this one, but I do like it. I have used it long enough and it has helped. Nothing like that 4K-turn or 3S-turn, then popping the Adrenaline rush to boost (get the free evade). It is a one shot, but I think it can really help you get good position on other ships.

Just my opinions.

I can agree that they are not the new hotness. I don't think that is why the decline. The main reason is the new point scoring against them. Once you lost your shields, your opponent just scored 25 points. TLT has had little effect. It just made auto thrusters mandatory. Also, the aggressor can get inside that range one bubble and still pop off shots when the y-wings can't.

I don't think TLT scared off the Brobots, that seems like a decent enough match-up for yhe Aggressors. I suspect that the change in MoV has had an impact though.

With that in mind, I keep looking at, but never really playing with wingman/expert handling+advanced sensors, etc.

They're good. They have a few (perceived) problems though and that's what's keeping them from being super prominent.

Such as:

1.) Large ship MoV nerf. Like the Phantom nerf, this nerf did a little but the player base overreacted and thinks they're bad now even though they're still great.

2.) When they came out they were used a lot, then at a certain point all the people playing them had a fat boosting turret arc dodge their dual Aggressors all game, and they went back to Turretwing.

3.) Acewing lists have the PS advantage.

4.) New stuff came out, more things to try. So by the time Fat Turretwing died off, everyone started to play other things.

5.) Honestly they're probably represented reasonably well in the meta, just not as much as the super popular Acewing pilots like Poe or Corran. They probably get played about as much as your average ship.

Iggy B + Crackshot + glimmerstim + thrusters

Other Iggy of choice with same load out.

Cannon of choice.

Still nasty.

I've had my fill of brobots for awhile thank you very much. Probably the one squad I'm most sick of playing against at the moment.

IMHO the new 50% damage rule has tempered the Brobot list somewhat. Used to be you can lose a bot and shields on number 2, but killing 3/4 of your opponents ships still gives you a win.

Now, unless you can table your opponent with that remaining IG, you're looking at a tie at best.

The same with the sudden disappearance of the Fat turret/speedy buddy lists. 2 very expensive ships just give up too many points at the 1/2 damage level to work with.

Yea I saw a ton of Brobots right up until Wave 7. One of the main reasons why I held off on a second one is because they were already so prevalent.

Thanks, everyone, for their suggestions. I'm gonna give Crack Shot a... shot...

I did play against a dual Crackshot Iggys. Amazingly good EPT.

I understand why HLC is good for brobots (you've only got 2 ships, so you want all the dice you can get), but how does it work in practice? I presume you'd need to stay out of range 1, otherwise if you missed, you wouldn't be able to attack again with B's pilot ability?

I think IG88B makes a nice combo with two Y-TLTs.
