Players Assaulting a Stronghold

By Icosiel, in Game Masters

Hey all. I come to you requesting assistance with something. This week, my PCs are assaulting an underground droid factory, and I need some ideas on the ins and outs of this fortress--ways to make it more complex and interesting than "we kill dudes until there aren't anymore dudes to kill."

Dungeon design has never been my strong point when running RPGs. I can set up social encounters like nobody's business, but fun, interesting, tactical base assaults have always been difficult for me. I want there to be some interesting challenges in a subterranean battle droid construction facility. Can anyone lend me a hand?

Under a Black Sun has some stuff in a factory facility at the end that might give you some ideas or a starting point.

Ways to get inside:

- Elevators from the surface.

- Air shafts leading down to maintenance area.

- Sewage/waste disposal pipes.

- Possible adjacent underground caves?

Interesting locations in the base:

- Assembly lines (see Attack of the Clones).

- Smelting/forging facility (again, AotC).

- Weapons testing area.

- Armoury.

You can spend Threat and Advantage on stuff like collapsing roofs, deactivated droids coming online when they detect nearby blaster fire, someone getting pulled onto an assembly line and poked with electric welders, vats of molten metal overturning and so on.

As for tactical options, the players can try to slice computers to turn off the lights (three setback dice to everyone), triggering fire extinguishing systems (2 setback dice, weapons getting clogged with foam/powder), trying to prevent the heavy defences (Droidekas or similar) from coming online and joining the fight or scrambling enemy communications to keep them from organizing a coordinated defence.

The players infiltrate through the [meepzorp] and come across a security droid. They must execute a chase to disable the droid before it can reach a security station and sound the alarm.

You may consider having the be multiple smaller factories and a larger assembly plant. They will have to go from plant to plant with security being more likely altered to their presence at each facility. The plants may also contain innocent workers our forced laborers that need to be assisted. Add in hot vats of molten metal automated cranes and conveyerbelts and noxious fumes/low oxygen areas/ radiation testing areas/and areas with low lighting the place has lots of hazards before you add in security guards. Of some areas may be unstable and not used but the players don't know that our something they need is stored there.

How about the Okara Droid Factory from SWTOR. Google should give you a few maps.

EDIT

The Jawas got four highres maps:

Just add a few side tunnels, stairwells, extra lifts, rear entrances and ventilation shafts to the blank spaces.

2nd EDIT

There are a few datacron videos for the location on Youtube.

Okay, anyone got a legend for any of the x-ray style maps? Because I can’t figure out ANYTHING on them. Not one single thing.

There are all sorts of things you can use for hazards in a factory, past security and possibly law enforcement, you could throw them on a conveyor belt with a bunch of cliché conveyor belt hazards (fire, blades, blasters) and call it a day
