Maybe I've just missed it, or can't get the search to reveal it, or I'm searching the wrong terms, but there has to be others that have made or want to make their own custom obstacles, like asteroids and such. I have some ideas, but I'm sure othes have as well, and I'd really like to see what others are doing. Chunks of cardboard laying on the board just feels so thematically wrong to me.
Custom Obstacles?
The cardboard may feel wrong, but with any kind of piece you'll need to have a flat template due to overlapping. I'd think a 3D item with a corresponding flat template would be an improvement though
I can think of a way to do it without a base that was that was the size if the obstacle, but it might come across as a little house-ruley to some. But still, making bases the same size/shape of the object shouldn't be that difficult. I've been toying around with some round wooden discs, drill a 1/8" hole, cut a small section of 1/8" dowel rod and just mount the piece on it. Works great, and if the ship touches the object (instead of the base) that counts as hitting it. It's not difficult to make the obstacles the right height for this, but I can understand why some wouldn't like it.
I would think some styrene about 1/16" with some weight added (for stability and a bit more thickness) could be cut to the correct shape.
I've also been toying with the possibilities of 3D printing, lots of ideas to explore there.
So... is there no thread or subforum for this sort of thing, it's hard for me to believe that it isn't something that people do. I can't recall the last miniatures skirmish game (for lack of a better description) where players didn't fab their own scenery and such.
Tons of people have done it: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=x-wing+3d+asteroids
3D asteroids are fun for the first 3-5 games you play. Maybe more, if you're really, really patient.

I don't know about that. Thematically the table looks so much better with the 3D Asteroids that I now find playing with cardboard kind of flat (no pun intended). I'm using the Space Rocks asteroids.
I use the cardboard counters on the table with 3D asteroids (made from Foam spheres) on Flight stands plonked on top of the counter. When ships get personal with a roid, we just take the 3D item off until it's clear. Certainly makes them more visible on a busily detailed space mat.
I had a load of these from playing BFG years ago, I even have a few that a friend made that are actual oblong-ish rocks that he drilled out & put on flight stands! Madness!!

I tend to agree with thinking the 3D objects would enhance the game. I've been making custom terrain pieces for every game I've ever played and never regretted it. I'm also thinking of making debris, bombs, pretty much anything that would be a real object (i.e. not things like focus, stress, etc.) into 3D objects. I was just looking for implementation ideas or inspiration.
I love my 3d asteroids, I made the bases small enough to go over the cardboard template. I also used a black acrylic marker to make the template edges black and then place the 3d objects on top. Anytime we get close or overlap we remove the 3d marker, it works great and is very immersive.
