Measuring in new rule book?

By lanewalkerx, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Well actually...

I had a little tiff today about this and I think this is a topic worth talking about.

During a turn I went to move a ship that was probably going to bump a rock. While placing the template I nudged the ship a bit and my opponent had the gall to call me out for trying to be a cheat. I finished them move, bumped the asteroid and immediately went to cool off.

This, after all game letting the "new" player premeasure everything! I was pretty mad, but when I came back I laid out the rules. No measuring! The only time that darn stick comes out is when checking to TL ( if you are in range of the ship you wanted to TL, you have to TL that ship! ) and then when declaring a target. You can only premeasure boost if the validity of the move is in question and no damned takesies backsies!

And then I went on to vape all his ships, sans my best ship. So...

At any rate the rules exist for a reason and if we are going to ignore some, well then why play at all?

Yeah, fair enough. There's a time and place for the base rules and the same applies to the competitive play rules. All of the players that I play, just play with the competitive play rules as it makes for a tighter game and means you have to learn to estimate maneuvers and ranges. Which essentially is the aim of the game. And we're not tournament players either. We've had only one tournament in the two years I've been playing. Once a newbie has a grasp of how the game works, enforce the "no pre-measure" rule strongly. The game becomes a test of skill when you need to estimate everything.

As for having to go off and cool down, it shouldn't really come to that. We're only pushing plastic ships around on a table. Try to keep that in perspective. It's only a game after all. :)

Lol! Well it wasn't really thaat bad. I mean I wasn't about to throw a model or anything, buy I know I can be... Abrasive? So I took a moment to "take a leak" and think about what I wanted to say and how I could say that in a socially acceptable way. I dunno. Sociopathy.

The point is... Newbs do need lenience, but you have to be careful with that because bad habits can develop quickly. I know I have a lot of bad habits myself! I blame a lot of that on GW and the constant suspicion that somewhere a space Elf player of either flavour is duping me somehow. Its something I have to work on, lol.

But seriously. It is a little frustrating to be called for nudging in what seemed like a pretty casual game. I mean, the first game I flew my Ace off the map! I moaned my dumb mistake but I didn't ask for a do-over. I'd expect my own sportsmanship to be rewarded in kind. Its not like I meant to nudge my own ship, even the play mats are kinda slippery!

So I expect lenience for my accidental nudge but grant none for a new player pre-measuring? Well, yes. Its situational. Obviously I wouldn't crack down on a guy in his second game ever, but once you start getting it? Well... The rules are part of that. Competitive or not. Additionally (I'm long winded) I think that all store play ought to adhere to competitive rules. The casual element is still important, but when certain situations come up, you need that exact definition. If you say well that's only a tournament rule, then its like a slippery slope. Then you got guys doing reverse manuevers and moving formations en masse. Next thing you know you got a bunch of orange suited freaks storming your equatorial trench and firing Torps up your exhaust port...

Our group plays the same way. Ive played in maybe 4-5 tourneys in my time (about a year of playing). Whenever we get a new guy, we just explain things as they happen foe their benefit, even if they may already know them, so we have the opportunity to explain things like when you can measure, when you should do your actions, etc.

I have to disagree a little bit.

I know I get upset when I do something boneheaded, not just in X-Wing but other competitive events I take part in. If I'm discgolfing and completely screw up a easy put I get upset. Not really upset, but there's times when I've had a whole round of bad throws and just general poor play I've had to walk away.

I'm not upset about my score persay I'm upset because I'm not playing as well as I can. Same goes for X-Wing.

Then there's the other issue. I don't care what I'm doing if someone is being a jerk I'm not going to react in a positive manner. The other guy may not think he's being a jerk, but that is something that can be very much a matter of PoV.
