D503's ship conversions and repaints

By D503, in Star Wars: Armada

Do you still have the VSD bow? I could see mounting it on another GSD for a different look.

Love the entire fleet, but the Dominator was truly a bold move.

Nicely done.

I think if I saw these ships across the table at a tourny I migny just concede out of respect.

I want to turn an X-wing scale GR75 and imperial raider into armada scale rebel and imperial space stations.

Is there any aftermarket value for all of the other bits and pieces that come with these two epic scale ships?

Is there somewhere where I can just buy the ship models at a more reasonable price?

Hmm I like the unified but differently applied hazard stripes throughout the Iron Warrior fleet, I reaaally do. Both the GSD and the leading edge striped VSD totally sell it for me. That's a pretty good work up on the Dominator, it does look like it just took a chunk out of one of those flabby Assault Frigates. I might not be a fan of the GSD style bow (But I don't like GSD's for their GSD style bow :P) but the execution is great, and seeing a larger ship with a similar style actually ties in the weird shape that the Gladiator has in the first place. It's really down to execution, and I like what you've done with it, mate. In particular, I like the work on the bridge, especially its siding, and the nice touch of remounting the shield generators/sensor domes on the hull.

Hmm, I won't link it as I'm not sure on the rules for that, but I know that Big Orbit Cards out of the UK sells individual miniatures and parts, and both GR-75 and Raiders are in stock at the moment. They're reasonable-ish, 'pending the conversion ratios.

Thanks, that's a pretty cool site.

20 quid for the transport and 30 for the raider is a lot better than the ~100 quid I was looking at for both normally. This would be a project for next summer holiday though - the modelling supplies I would need to complete this dual space station project would be quite epic, and I only have them in the UK and not in China. This is pretty much a 'pie in the sky' idea at this stage, but I'll describe what I was thinking of doing:

I was thinking of building the imperial station as a raider standing up vertically, and then build an asteroid into one side with decks stretching around/between between the asteroid and the main body of the station as if it were first moored onto it for construction. Then keep the solar panel on only one side..... It would look pretty intimidating.

The rebel one would be an upside-down GR75 with the engines replaced by an asteroid/decking in a similar manner. I'd have a huge solar shield all across one side, like they had to build the station right next to the sun to avoid detection. I'd have a huge amount of extra cargo containers attached to the non-shielded side, and it would look like a huge shabby mess that is about to fall apart.

Both stations would contain a framework for docking ships up into for repairs, like the stations in X-Wing vs TIE fighter had, and seeing that Big Orbit sells armada ships as parts... probably a couple of ships and fighters on landing platforms too.

Your Dominator looks amazing! Well done :) Beautiful cat btw, is it a russian blue?

That would be one very ambitious project. I think it could work, again I just finished watching Knights of Sidonia, so there could always be partially influencing my thinking. Seems that the cargo holds of a GR-75 could make a pretty convincing modular 'base' with some extra modelling work: hab-levels and foundries, what not.

As for the squadrons: Here is Howlrunners TIE swarm. They are used quite often as a primary anti-bomber duty.

Here is Mauler Mithiel's Mad Mob - They find themselves often paired with the direction of Admiral Chiraneau onboard the Mesmeriser. He has a knack of bouncing round like a jackrabbit and shredding squadrons.

Major Rhymer's big ball finishes up the line TIEs - They are about to get reinforced with a 3rd bomber soon, as there will be an ISD1 with expanded hangars and enhanced comms to control them.

And last of all, the interceptors. I was focusing on getting the photo, I didn't notice qiuqiu until it was too late, the sneaky little bastard.

Nice job!

What paint did you use for all the ties?

They are the GW paints, standard space wolf palette. I wanted them to be blue-grey, to contrast with the dark grey ships. Imperials are boring, but not that boring.

Oh cool. I use gw paints too. Which specific one did you use. I have a few that im experimenting with, but nothing that i like so far, so im gonna go out and buy some more colors.

I have finished my Ton-Falk class escort carrier, thanks to the wonderful Mel's Miniatures and no thanks to the competency of the Chinese postal services.

And here it is as part of a fleet:

I use it as a VSD1 with wing commander and expanded hangar bays. It controls Vader, Rhymer and 2 TIE bombers, and is where I want to put Motti when I am running 3 VSDs

Here is my Bossk - he is flying a Gozanti courtesy of Mel's miniatures. I find it hard to believe that a freighter that is smaller than a single TIE fighter is the single most bulldozer-tastic bully squadron in the game. This makes it more believable, but a little less canon.

Here is my Rhymerball. Vader, 2x TIE bombers and Rhymer in his ATR-6 (Thanks Mel!). Again, I find it hard to believe that a TIE bomber contains the logistics suite to more than double the effective range on the guidance warheads of other ships nearby, and still have more than their payload. An ATR-6 with its torpedoes, ion cannons and room out back for warhead guidance technicians fits the bill nicely.

Also, I made vader a single model, like a rouge and villain. He flies alone, with his black TIE.

Sorry for the crappy focus on this shot, that's the best I have for now.

Just posting to say that I really love the repaints and custom models going on here!

Here is my standard 4-ship TIE formation - a jumpmaster5000 Imperial shuttle, 2x TIEs and an ace. I am particularly fond of how this formation works with Mauler Mithiel, when supported by Warlord/H9 turbolasers. The guaranteed 1 damage from Warlord, as well as the guaranteed damage from Mithiel really bites deep into the enemy ships.

And again, Qiuqiu made his way into the photos. He seems to particularly like imperial aces and their red TIE fighters.

I have been doing some painting.

Here are my 2 imperial raiders. They don't have names, they die too fast. Even CR90s get names, but these? Nope.

Here is my MC30. It is a flesh torpedo frigate. This purple headed warrior has proven to be the bane of many imperial ships so far, and is one of the main reasons why imperial raiders don't seem to last very long.

I'm loving that Shrimp D5. Looks like something Sabine on rebels would paint.

I don't understand why you felt the need to paint Raiders though. They already Pop on the table!
