X-Wing goes mainstream in the UK - now available on Tesco.com

Behold the face of things to come.

For those of you stateside, Tesco is one of (if not THE) biggest national superstore chains in the UK, selling everything from groceries to clothes, toys, electrical goods etc. It's probably a WalMart equivalent (although WalMart has a partnership with ASDA here in the UK).

Why is this such big news?

Well, I know major retail outlets stock X-Wing stateside, but it's the first time I have EVER seen a miniatures game at all on sale through a major UK supermarket, even online. It's pretty much uncharted territory for the genre, and this is a country which has been home to Games Workshop for the better part of 30 years. The vast majority of the time, if you want to buy a game like X-Wing, you have to go to a specialist hobby shop.

Now, admittedly it's the run up to Christmas. And it's also the run up to the release of The Force Awakens. Tesco will unsurprisingly be piggybacking on anything remotely Star Wars branded in order to drive seasonal revenue and sales.

But even so, this is pretty awesome news for X-Wing fans in the UK, and for FFG. We could well see a big influx of new players into the community in the New Year.

Nothing new here. I bought the original trilogy core set from tesco about 2 years ago online and collected it instore, so I can't see that it will bring more people to the game than it already has.

If Tesco selling a handful of Core Sets manages to bring just one new player into the wider community then that's great news :-)

I had no idea. It is good news that they have been selling it; though I feel at the minute it might get swept away due to the tidal wave of TFA merch in the shops, most parents and even some uninformed adults buying their own toys might prefer to spend £9.99 on a pack of 4 micro machines!

Its been 'click and collect' at Tesco since i've been playing the game. I think the larger stores stocked it too.

Then again i was in the sony centre in Berlin a couple of years ago and a bit 'mainstream' store in there stocked it too.

(waterstones bookstores have xwing ships and core sets as well if you ask, well the nottingham one does anyway)
