Dropping the Bomb....

By Evenflow30, in X-Wing

Does anyone have any success using a squadron built around the use of bombs/mines? I've been on this forum for a while and haven't seen too much in the way of bomb builds. I personally have never used bombs in either tourney nor casual play, but wanted to maybe start. I was thinking something like:

Warden squadron pilot(23)

Extra munitions (2)

Conner net (4)

Proximity mines (3)

Adv. Slam (2)

Total(34)

I don't know what I'd run with it, just an idea I had albeit a pricey one. What are some if any bomb/mine oriented builds you guys have had success with?

I run a similar K-wing, for wingmen I take another K-wing with the same load and another K-wing as an escort gunship with TLT.

It's a fun list.

Deathrain!

Miranda (TLT, c3po, seismic + seismic)

either Dutch (tlt, bomb loadout, seismic, extra munitions) or Gray (same thing)

either Gold (TLT) or Gray (TLT + bomb loadout + seimic)

"mine builds" aren't a thing, because they're basically 100% there to neuter or destroy single, high value targets

you get one A-SLam Warden with Intelligence Agent and a brace of conner nets, and you'll see Soontir piss himself in fear

slap 3 B-wings along for the ride

What about Emon Azzameen? Any scum players like taking him as a bomber with the Andrasta title?

I love using Emon. His bombs are a blast (huehuehue) and he can pull off some hilarious drops at the most inopportune time for your opponent. I usually slap a Proton, Proximity and Seismic on him.

Now. OP, the reason no one makes lists dedicated to bombs is because it's ineffective. This is the first thing I learned playing with Emon . When you pack a list full of bombs, suddenly you find yourself doing everything possible to drop a bomb successfully rather than getting in some good normal attacks.

Bombs should augment a list, NOT be the focus of it. At least, not yet. Future releases may change that.

Just remember: when you use bombs, primary attacks are still your main goal. If you see with Advanced SLAM that you can set up a lethal Conner Net or Proximity Mine in a turn or two, do it. But don't go out of your way to make it happen, as you could end up sacrificing a lot of damage for an ineffective (but satisfying) bomb drop.

I've used this squad a little bit:

100pts

Warden K - Connor Net, Extra Munitions, Adv Slam

Gold Y - Ion Cannon Turret, R3A2, Title

2x Blue B's

The Warden Connor Nets a target. The Y double stresses them to go along with the ion from the net. The Bs clean up.

That's sound advice thanks. I agree with your current bomb meta assessment. Just to play devil's advocate, say you ran something like 3-4 scimitar pilots and had them drop say, proximity mines in a loose horizontal formation. Would that work as a build or once the bombs were dropped would the limitations of the bomber criple the build?

I think you've got the right of it. Bombers have a lot of staying power and Scimitars make great blockers, but their lack of mobility and low innate firepower will ensure they don't stick around through the late game.

I'm not so sure that dropping a line of Proximities is the best way to use them. It shuts off that part of the board for sure, but Prox Mines are deadly when used to clog up asteroid fields or dropped right on top of opponents after an attack pass in the joust.

I played this at a tournament a few weeks ago:

BOMB-ZUKES!

100 points

PILOTS

Warden Squadron Pilot (38)
K-Wing (23), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Proximity Mines (3), Ion Bombs (2), Advanced SLAM (2)

Warden Squadron Pilot (40)
K-Wing (23), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Intelligence Agent (1), Conner Net (4), Seismic Charges (2), Advanced SLAM (2)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

I took third out of 6. I crushed a triple TIE Advanced build and then was crushed in turn by Soontir, Redline, and friends, though it did go to time with one K-wing left. It was fun and the second guy I played (tournament winner) said the SLAM-BOMB (and threat of same) scared the crap out of him.

There's only one bomber list I'd ever consider taking to a tournament I think -

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (19) x 4 TIE Bomber (16), Proximity Mines (3)

Omicron Group Pilot (24) Lambda-Class Shuttle (21), Darth Vader (3)

So much tankhood, so many good proxy vibrations.

THE most epic bomber is always a "genius" proton Y-wing.

The enemy can expect anyting...

Really a ship that's feared by everyone, especially in epic, because 4-K-TURN BOMBING RUN!

What about Emon Azzameen? Any scum players like taking him as a bomber with the Andrasta title?

Yep. He's ace. Out fit him with 3 x Proximity Mines then deny huge areas of the board to low-health arc dodgers. Soontie Fel hates this guy.

Another fun Scum build:

Syndicate Thug - Genius, Bomb Loadout, Proton Bombs, Extra Munitions - 25 points

I've actually seen a beefier version of this ship run to great effect:

Kavil - Genius, Bomb Loadout, Proton Bombs, Extra Munitions, Twin Laser Turret, Engine Upgrade - 41 points

Yes, I know - 41 points is an absolutely HUGE investment in a Y-Wing, but I ran into this build at a tournament a while back and it did pretty well for itself. I was flying against it in the final, and it pulled some manuevers which blew my mind. I've tried flying it myself since, and it's probably one of the most sheer fun builds I've run into.

As for all-bomb builds, the following TIE Bomber build is currently doing the rounds:

Scimitar Squadron Pilot - Homing Missile, Seismic Charges, Extra Munitions x 4

What about Emon Azzameen? Any scum players like taking him as a bomber with the Andrasta title?

adding veteran instincts makes Kavil uber-bomber. But super-costly, what's not that fun...

I think this list would be viable even with all of its bombs:

===========================

Someone Set Us Up The Bomb

===========================

100 points

Emon Azzameen (44)

Firespray-31 (36), Inertial Dampeners (1), Andrasta (0), Seismic Charges (2), Ion Bombs (2), Proximity Mines (3)

Syndicate Thug (28) x 2

Y-Wing (18), Twin Laser Turret (6), Bomb Loadout (0), Extra Munitions (2), Seismic Charges (2)

I've had great success with:

4 x Scimitar Tie Bombers w/ Extra Munitions, Homing Missiles, and Seismic Charges

I used Jonus before EM was out and made 3rd at my Store Championship. Extra Munitions and trading Jonus for Homing is great.

There is no good list that uses just bombs. They are tools, but not the only thing to use.

In a casual tournament I am running (1 round pr. week), I have experimented with the following list, and been close all games, but no wins yet (3rd of 14 rounds):

Azzameen with: Andrasta, 2 x prox mines, seismic charge, experimental interface, K4 Sec droid, inertial dampeners

Y-wing Thug with autoblaster turret, bomb load-out, prox mine, unhinged astromech

StarViper Enforcer

I have had great succes hitting with the Prox mines on both Azzameen and Y-wing. It has come a bit of cost of putting myself in a bad spot, especially Azzameen as he is my opponents prime target. He has dealt some nice damage before dying and the Thug and Enforcer have also been quie effective, but Iose PS battle in the end.

HOWEVER it is SO much fun to fly and it is by far the list I have played I have enjoyed the most! Slingshooting thos prox mines in the face of the enemy then seismic charging them next round is great. I am thinking about swapping the 2 x prox mines and Seismic for 2 x proton bombs. Will see about that.

Cheers

I've tried the "Genius" + Proton bomb combo once for fun. The bomb gave me a munitions failure and blew off my turret

That's why you need to be Kavil and boost with dr.Zoidberg sound woop woop woop after that.

Thats the build I used. Once used it with Emon and took out 2 Bwings still with shields as I dropped 2 proton bombs in their midst. Unfortunatly I lost that one as they had already got me down to low health.

Yep. He's ace.

No. Ace is his brother. ;)

I really need to pick up Most Wanted soon.

A fun thing to try is a scum y-wing with proton bombs, genius and your choice of autoblaster turret or extra munitions.

I really like 3 Gamma Squadron Pilots with Extra Munitions, Munitions Failsafe, Proton Bombs, and whatever ordnance suits me that day.

Gamma Sq. Pilot (Munitions Failsafe, Extra Munitions, Proton Bomb, Plasma Torpedoes, Assault Missiles) [34]

Gamma Sq. Pilot (Munitions Failsafe, Extra Munitions, Proton Bomb, Ion Pulse Missiles, Homing Missiles) [34]

Gamma Sq. Pilot (Munitions Failsafe, Extra Munitions, Proton Bomb, Flechette Torpedoes, Concussion Missiles) [32]

TOTAL 100

I ran something like this before wave 7 hit, and I was impressed at how much damage it pumped out against a Z-95 swarm. With Extra Munitions, this is going to be fun! (I haven't tried it since then because I'm still enamored with my Alpha Fleet Officer squad).

Glad to see so much love for proton bombs on this thread! I've been trying to make them work on two cutlasses with AC and EM, as an escort for Echo, who stays the hell out of the way and snipes. Great fun, but pretty limited. I do like the action economy that running AC and protons gives to a ship with boost, I must say. It also allows you to drop a beast of a bomb, K-turn and hit the perfect shot, that kind of shenanigans...

Emon + Cluster Mine/Conner Net+ EM + Tactician

Thug + TLT + Seismic + EM + Genius

Thug + TLT + Seismic + EM

100pts

I am a big fan of this bomb oriented list.

Emon + Prox Mine + K4 is pretty solid too.

TBH, if you add up potential damage from bombs, it will never be enough to take out most lists. You still have to plan to use your lasers. Building a list with both in mind is key.
